ABOUT NICHE GARMENTS 2010 – BUILD 300 SERIES

After much anticipation, we are pleased to announce the latest release of Niche Garments 2010 or the Build

300 series. This incorporates the platform upgrade to Microsoft Office version 2010. Niche has been working

on this upgrade for well over 2 years, to achieve a complete new user interface, remodeling of the system

navigation and many new features that will provide better business results for all Niche Partners.

The new series was initially launched with new customers, and then rolled out to several clients to evaluate,

enabling us to make further improvements to the system. It is now available to all our customers and we are

looking forward to upgrading all Niche Partners to Niche Garments 2010

As the changes to the user interface can be a bit daunting to the user we are highly recommending that our

Partners take the opportunity to use a staging version, to allow users to look at and test the system before

going live. We would also recommend a little extra training to help the change process and ensure a smooth

transition. This document will give you an insight into the many changes available under the new Build 300

ABOUT MICROSOFT OFFICE VERSION 2010

Office version 2010 is Microsoft’s most current release; during the last 12 months Server Pack 1 for Office has

also been released, this has been a big improvement on Office 2007 and has been worth the wait. We have

also allowed enough time for Office 2010 to mature and we recommend that you take the opportunity to

upgrade.

We have also had an opportunity to see how the platform works across most operating systems so we know it

works well with Windows (XP, Vista and 7) and Windows Server (2003 / 2008). Performance has in most cases

stayed the same and in some instance improved from the previous version of Garments.

MOST NOTICEABLE CHANGES TO MS ACCESS

Changes within the MS Access platform have been significant. The following items are for reference purposes

and do not indicate all of the new features of the platform.

• Office Fluent Ribbon not Menu

o Commonly referred to as “the ribbon” it is the replacement for the old menu system

• Database File Extension change from: Mdb / Mde to Accdb / Accde

o TIP : IT please take note of this. Especially for antivirus and back-ups

• Web Service. With this new feature inter-operability with other online services is now possible

o Complex data types have been added including Document Insertion – (Awesome new

feature)

• User Interface (UI) changes to forms and reports

• Tighter integration with Office especially Outlook

• Performance / Stability

• Direct Printing / Emailing with PDF

NICHE GARMENTS 2011

NICHE GARMENTS 2011 INTRODUCTION

The upgrade to the latest Microsoft Access platform has seen significant changes to the UI of Niche Garments.

Office 2010 introduces use of the Ribbon, Tabbed Summary Screens, Placement of Form controls and

Reporting Improvements, use of these items will be discussed further.

Our continued development of Niche Garments 2010 on this new platform has seen the product evolve into its

own entity.

Niche Garments 2010 will not only include new development but also includes features that were not possible

in the previous versions. The very simplest example of a feature is printing to PDF, only in the latest version of

MS Access has this been added with a direct option to email.

NICHE GARMENTS CONTAINER

The container is the working area of Niche Garments. The first change you will see is the colour scheme.

Rather than having a dark gray screens and background as previous versions, a fresh and modern interface has

been provided.

In the previous versions the container only held the menu and display of reports. The container now also holds

the summary screens.

NICHE GARMENTS – RIBBON

A much more user friendly ribbon has been added to Niche Garments.

The existing menu has been regrouped and transferred to the ribbon to provide a better user experience. The

new ribbon has been organised by operational department, with all summary screens, forms, reports, setup

and utilities for each department grouped together.

There are two main benefits to your business.

• The user can now navigate the system more quickly and easily, improving the user learning curve and

saving time trying to find different functions in the system.

• The second big improvement is that we are able to repeat menu items in different areas, i.e. if a

report works for product development as well as production, then the report will appear in each tab.

For anybody not familiar with the ribbon here is an overview:

NOTE:

The ribbon replaces the traditional drop down menus. Understanding the logic of the ribbon will help the user

to appreciate the benefits of using it. The drop down simply lists items, but the ribbon does this in a more

descriptive manner; the new ribbon should read more clearly and therefore will be easier to navigate. One

clear distinction of the ribbon is the horizontal display as instead of a vertical drop down.

The ribbon is made up of Tabs, Groups, Buttons and Menu Items. The options of a Tab are displayed in a

horizontal manner and remain until and new Tab is selected.

Page 6: 1 Niche Fashion Technology Partner Program 2011libvolume8.xyz/.../ediingarmenttechnologynotes2.pdf · NICHE GARMENTS HAS 2 TYPES OF FORMS SUMMARY AND DETAILED. Summary / Index Forms

6 Niche Fashion Technology Partner Program 2011

HOW TO USE THE RIBBON: TAB / GROUP / BUTTON

1. Select a Tab (menu item in old speak)

2. A vertical pane below the tabs will appear.

3. Within the pane are groups

4. Read the groups

5. Within each groups are either buttons or other items i.e. lists

6. Read item within groups with emphasis being on the larger items

Example 1: Tab / Group / Button

• Tabs : Product, Customers, Supplier

• Tab Product : Opens groups Styles and Parts

• Within group Style: Is Index and Inventory

Ribbon Vs Menu

Product | Styles | Index

 Replaces

Menu : Garments | Garments in the old version of Niche Garments.

Example 2 : Emphasis

The most common functions can be emphasised by the size of the button. The large buttons indicate most

commonly used options.

Page 7: 1 Niche Fashion Technology Partner Program 2011libvolume8.xyz/.../ediingarmenttechnologynotes2.pdf · NICHE GARMENTS HAS 2 TYPES OF FORMS SUMMARY AND DETAILED. Summary / Index Forms

7 Niche Fashion Technology Partner Program 2011

Within a form

Buttons of importance are coloured.

Example 3: Sub Menu

Lists still remain, especially in the reports section.

GOOD AND THE BAD OF THE RIBBON

Since the ribbon is here to stay here are the good and bad points of the ribbon:

Detriments

• The ribbon after using the old menu system takes a little while to get used to

• The vertical display limits the number of items that can be displayed, causing the scrolling of items

Benefits

When you select a Tab the options are displayed vertically below and remain until another tab is

selected

The ribbon is more intuitive to read then the previous menu structure

Larger icons help emphasize important functions and features

The ribbon has added extensibility not just limited to being a menu

NICHE GARMENTS – FORMS

CONTROLS

All controls pertaining to a form are now located at the top of the form, where previously they were located at

the bottom.

Example – Form Controls

• Controls / Buttons of importance are coloured

• Fields of importance within the form are also bolded

NICHE GARMENTS HAS 2 TYPES OF FORMS SUMMARY AND DETAILED.

Summary / Index Forms

Most summary forms have been pinned to the container. Multiple summary forms can be opened up, each

form is contained within a tab. To navigate between the forms click the Tab. Previously the summary forms

would open and popup on each other. Now all open summary forms are known and easily accessible. When

the container is in full screen mode on a larger monitor the vertical is increased and thereby permitting more

information to be displayed on the screen.

Example – Summary Forms - Tabs

Detailed Forms

Detailed forms have remained as popup and the only changes to these have been controls have been moved

to the top. Controls, Buttons and fields of importance have been highlighted / bolded.

NICHE GARMENTS – REPORTS

Office 2010 has more options in the report ribbon. These options will run in both runtime and full MS Access.

NOTE

Niche provides the Excel and Word formats as created by Microsoft. Sometimes Microsoft loses the

formatting of these reports especially in exporting to Excel. All WYSWIG formats will work correctly in Niche

Garments 2010. These include PDF, Snapshot, XPS.

Where possible we will provide an export or two of the actual data source that can be exported which should

assist when wishing to work with raw numbers. When you see two exports each will have a slightly different

variation of the data.

Two types of Export

NICHE GARMENTS 2010 FEATURES AND ENHANCEMENTS

10 Niche Fashion Technology Partner Program 2011

Document Insertion

All major forms (i.e. Garments, Invoice, Orders, Bills etc) will allow documents to be inserted into the database.

The term inserted is different to attached where an actual copy of the document is maintained within the

database. There is no limit to the number of documents that can be inserted into a transaction. To open the

document click on the document link and a list of available documents will be listed.

If you edit the document changes can be saved back to the database.

Inserting a document means the recipient user does not need to have access to the same path and file name

to open / edit the document.

Once the document is inserted into the database the original copy on the file system is no longer maintained.

Caution: When the document is large use linking.

Document Linking / Hyperlink

An extra field type “hyperlink” has been added to notes. A hyperlink allows for documents to be attached via

the file system or a link reference to a website. Where a link is a reference to a document in the file system all

users must have access to the drive and path to access the file. Where the link is a website then the user must

be able to access the web.

Document Insertion / Linking properties

Where a document is linked or inserted in the database the common property between the two are:

• To open the document you must also have the associated program to be able to open the document

i.e. Word, Excel, Adobe

• You cannot print the document without first opening it.

Date Picker

Where a field is of type date / time a date picker box appears. This saves the user having to type in a date.

Coloured Buttons

With Access being available for over 15 years we now are able to have coloured buttons.

NICHE GARMENTS MAINTENANCE / SUPPORT

Niche Fashion Technology development policy means that most of the listed changes below are in both Niche

Garments Build 310 (2010) and the previous platform build Niche Garments Build 255. Where changes are

strictly 2010 it will be indicated.

Niche Garments Maintenance Scheduled

Niche Garments 2010 – Build 310 Active and all new development

Niche Garments 255 From 2012 critical maintenance, limited development.

Niche Garments 240 Critical maintenance only.

11 Niche Fashion Technology Partner Program 2011

Niche Garments 230 and less Support Only

Support

All Niche Garment versions are supported by our staff. If it is identified that an error exists in a version that has

no further development then the client will be required to upgrade.

Niche Web and Development

We have two development teams one for Niche Garments and the other for Niche Web. The Partners Program

fees only contribute to the development of Niche Garments. Niche Web is funded through other channels and

where Niche Web development takes place in Niche Garments, this is costed through within the Niche Web

budget.

Niche Web and Niche Garments

Niche Web has been designed as an independent platform to Niche Garments. It was recognised early on that

to have a successful ecommerce solution required a strong operational management system. With NFT having

this operational management solution via Niche Garments it was only obvious to integrate the two together.

This seamless integration gives has given our clients the opportunity to have an ecommerce operation

management system. No other company in the small to medium space has this level of sophistication.

Therefore you will notice new fields, screens and reports that relate to Niche Web. Therefore if at some point

you do decide to use Niche Web going online is almost as easy as a b c. Otherwise Niche Web integration

should have little impact on your normal operation if you are not already using this module.

NICHE GARMENTS DEVELOPMENT ITEMS 2011

REGISTRATION / LICENSING

At time of release we are in final stages of completing this development.

Updates of the Niche registration will happen remotely replacing the need for Niche staff to log in to your

computers. Clients will also be able to request for additional modules and licenses that will provided remotely.

Other development ideas for this remote access could be to contact Niche Support from within Garments.

Niche being able to monitor the health of the Niche Garments system and then advising the client when

maintenance is required.

SECURITY

At time of release re-engineering security / user access

The redevelopment of the ribbon in 2011 delayed the implementation of the security module. Currently in

development users will be broken in groups and each group will be given access / restricted down to button

level. In the previous version of Garments a user was limited to a menu.

A request has been made to limit particular users from viewing, add, editing information at form / report level.

Once general security has been developed we will revisit this section.

CONCURRENT LICENSE

12 Niche Fashion Technology Partner Program 2011

Niche Garments now releases licenses when each user close the program. Previously all users need to close

the application and wait for the license to reset.

COLOUR SCHEME

Like to change the colour scheme of Office including Niche Garments:

When signing into garments there is an option to select and change the colour scheme. You can change the

scheme on start up. A bit of fun, (found it when poking around a forum). Applies only to the current user.

PRINTING

Customers using only the runtime version of MSACCESS 2010 get the full set of printing controls, plus new

controls.

These include:

• All the export options

• Email – does require a mail client to be installed on the machine

• Report Screen – When report option form hides lower left, click the “Report Screen” button to unhide

SUMMARY SCREEN – TAG INACTIVE / ACTIVE FILTERING

A subtle change on many summary screens the ability to filter for Tagged items. Additionally this filter also

applies to:

Garments Stock View Screen – Product | Index | Stock

Select all styles then filter for tagged or untagged styles.

13 Niche Fashion Technology Partner Program 2011

Document Insertion

Introduced in Build 300, the UI of the form has been replaced. Previously the documents that were edited did

not automatically update back in Garments.

You can:

• Add any type of document

• Open the document

• Edit and Update the document

NOTE

All documents are imbedded into a separate database (Ngd.accdb). Access the inserted document from the

original insertion screen in Niche Garments (not on the file system). The maximum size of the file database

allowed is 2gb. Therefore it is not recommended that large files be imbedded. System administrators please be

aware of this file when backing up Niche Garments.

Notes and attachment

Introduced in Build 300 it worth noting that rather than imbed large file in documents, instead use the linking

feature in notes.

External (Tab)

Clients have requested for additional adhoc fields. These have been used for printing swing tickets and labels.

TIP/TRICK: Using an external program written for clients we have used codes entered into the external tab,

attached it to “Export Label” and generated the Swing Tickets and Labels with correct codes. For more

information contact [email protected] reference circletech label.

POS (Tab)

Niche has started to develop a new POS, currently code name Baby POS. It works like Niche Web, all setup is

done with the style. Although currently limited in functionality it does work well if you are looking for a basic

entry level POS. Contact [email protected] for more information.

14 Niche Fashion Technology Partner Program 2011

Web (Tab)

Web Description has been expanded up to a 1000 characters, with rich text.

Note: When using rich text you need to be careful about the html tags that get created. If you incorrectly edit

these tags and the style is sent to web, it may cause formatting issues in the page.

Sell options: Not Visible, General, and Private.

Where the “private” (new) is part of an invitation only campaign. Persons must be invited via a campaign in

order to see these styles. Development has not been finalized.

Colour Coding of Wholesale / Costing / Import

Subtle colour changes in the title tell the user what type of style they are working in.

PRODUCT | GARMENTS REPORTS | RETAIL BARCODE LIST

As many clients are using Garments for their retail or are to generate barcodes this new report is a listing of

styles and it associated barcode in Code 39 format ready for scanning.

Multi Agent and Label Restriction

A company that sells multiple brands to a stockiest (wholesale customer) may have more than one agent /

sales person assigned. An agent may also be restricted to selling particular labels and the stockiest is only

allowed to buy selected brands. The new development in Niche Garments allows for this complex set of

associations.

How It Works

• A wholesale customer is assigned to labels it can buy

• An agent is assigned to labels it can sell

• Agents are assigned to wholesale customers

• When using Niche Web for wholesale ordering by Agent the labels that are allowed to be sold for

both are displayed

• A union report of Agent / Stockiest / Label show the relationship

• Note: When entering a sales order in Niche Garments, label restriction is not applied

NICHE GARMENTS / NICHE WEB STOCKIST

In Niche Web a requirement of most wholesalers in their is a stockist page. Niche Web allows for stockist to be

automatically listed on:

• A custom stockist page

• Style Details Page: Only list stockiest who been supplied that style.

Stockist is categorized into two types preferred and general, further broken up into local, state, country. Why:

because some stockist are large retailers and their local locations are not always known.

How It Works - Niche Garments

The principal will decide which stockist is to be shown on the website. Stockist are divided in Priority and

General, Local, State and Country. The ranking is applied and managed by the principal.

• 0 – Do not show as stockist

• 1 – Local Stockist

• 2 - State Stockist

• 3 – Country Stockist

• 4 – Preferred Local Stockist

• 5 – Preferred State Stockist

• 6 - Preferred Country Stockist

Priority Vs General

By default only preferred stockist are shown when the person lands on the stockist page. The user is then able

to refine the search to the stockist that are local to them, both preferred and standard stockist are listed.

Local / State / Country

We don't always know where the styles are actually delivered to. In this case choose the level that best suits

the stockist.

If you know the physical delivery location of the stockist, then assign the stockiest to local. For a state stockist

choose state, and if a country wide stockist choose the country.

Page 20: 1 Niche Fashion Technology Partner Program 2011libvolume8.xyz/.../ediingarmenttechnologynotes2.pdf · NICHE GARMENTS HAS 2 TYPES OF FORMS SUMMARY AND DETAILED. Summary / Index Forms

20 Niche Fashion Technology Partner Program 2011

Example: In the stockist page for Australia a map is presented, when a user clicks on a state the user is shown

state and local stockist of that state.

Updating Stockists Location on the Web

When a stockist is sent to the web, the location details of stockist need to be acquired (longitude and latitude).

To update the location details manually run the following url : yourwebsite.com.au/FirmLocation.aspx ,

depending on the number of stockist is may take several minutes to run.

Stockist Niche Web (eBoutique)

The principal has control over the stockist pages and how information is shown.

Initially when a person lands on a stockist page the users country is automatically detected and preferred

stockist are listed. The user has the option to request for stockist closer to them. A user requests for local

stockist will require them to share location. In order to accurately get the users location a feature called geo-

location is used. Depending on the device they are using it will then try to locate the user i.e. GPS, Cell Tower,

local exchange, IP provider. Niche Web does not collect this information and the service is opt in only.

Once a list of stockist is presented the user can then request the stockist to be shown in Google maps. Where

the user has requested to show "stockist near them" and display in Google maps the distance to stockist is also

given.

DEPARTMENT PURCHASING AND INVENTORY

How To Raise a Garment P/Order with a correct price when the Style is of type Costing

Issue: You import styles and supply parts to the manufacture. When raising a garment purchase order you

need to bring through the related labour costs of producing a style (not its actual cost).

How To Do:

• When building your costing add a labour item of type purchase order

• When the style is entered on the garment purchase order the sum of these special labour items are

brought through as the cost price

Setting Up the Labour Items:

• Products | Garment Setup | Labour Items

• Add a labour item

• Select Labour Type – Purchase Order

DEPARTMENT MANUFACTURING

Consumption of Parts when Stock Receipting

Rather than using production cutting / making sheets the company can choose to consume fabrics in Stock

Receipting. Not designed to replace production it is used when it is important to monitor parts of high

importance / net worth. This feature is handy for importers who need to track fabrics.

MAIN REPORTS | PART MOVEMENT > NEW LOGIC

The parts movement report is a transactional and as at now report. Therefore the reports values may change

without any new transactions being made. For example a production sheet has a status of in production,

partially received and fully received. On production sheets the Garments system does not record the actual

changes in values to the sheet.

The part movement reports display movements in the columns Held, Production, Track, Out and Receipt.

Each transaction type affects each column differently. By understanding how each transaction affects each

column you will be able to 1 know the state of the transaction and 2 the sum of all the columns for all

transactions for that part will give you the correct totals for that part.

Transactions Types and State

A part can be of the following transaction types Adjustment, Production Sheets, Check Out, Purchase Orders,

Stock Receipt / Return and Garment Stock Receipt with consume parts on.

State: Some transactions have a state of raised, partial and complete.

The follow list shows each transaction type and state.

A single transaction i.e. a raised production order can only have one state.

The state of the transaction type shows which columns are being affected.

Therefore when reading the transaction, match where the values are found to the transaction type and status

in the list to identify tells the operation and status of the transaction.

email. Example: Send daily stock files to a third party.

If you believe you require this facility please contact [email protected]. There is no cost associated

with this utility other than the time to set it up. On average between 4-6 hours is required, depending on

complexity.
