A little background on Block Kids…

The National Association of Women in Construction’s Pittsburgh Chapter began hosting itsannual Block Kids Contest in 2003. What started as a small event with just a few childrencompeting, has now grown to include participation by over 60 kids from all over the region. Theidea behind the program is to build upon the natural inclination that children have to create andconstruct when playing with Legos and challenge them to engineer a structure by adding variousmaterials into the mix. Block Kids is the only event of its kind in the Pittsburgh area, and withyour support, we can continue to ensure its success for years to come!

As the demand for construction-related skilled trade workers continues to rise, it becomesexceedingly vital that we introduce these career options to our youth. By familiarizing kids withour industry through this fun and creative program, we hope to pique a lifelong interest inconstruction and engineering.

The contest rules are simple, girls and boys in grades 1-6 have one hour to build a construction-related project using Lego micro blocks, rocks, paper, foil, and string. Volunteers from theUnited Brotherhood of Carpenters serve as judges and prizes are awarded to the top threeprojects, as well as for the best-in-show for each grade level. What’s even more exciting is thatour program is part of a larger national competition! Winners from Pittsburgh will advance to aregional competition and one semi-finalist from each region is entered into the Block KidsNational Program competition. The top three projects receive national awards.

We need your help to make this year’s Block Kids a success! Your donation to the 2016Block Kids Contest, guarantees the livelihood of this program. Without your sponsorship, ourChapter wouldn’t be able to cover the expenses related to hosting this event, like purchasingmaterials, refreshments, and prizes for the children. The turn-out for the 2015 Block Kids was ourbest yet, and we hope to grow and exceed last year's attendance at this year’s event on October23, 2016!

(Approximate cost per child, $20.00)
