TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Sometimes children acquire nicknames in childhood that stalk them through adulthood: “Pinky,” “Boo-boo,” and the like. This Sunday was once called “Low Sunday,” a step down from Easter glory, and an
unfortunate nickname since Easter rejoicing goes on for fifty days. Traditionally this is the day when the newly baptized put away their white baptismal robes and returned to their everyday life after a week of intense celebration. Of course, the goal was to take up everyday duties with a very new point of view. A long title for the day was Dominica in albis deposito, or “The Lord’s Day for Putting Away the Albs,” so no wonder the nickname “Low Sunday” arose. In the old calendar it was also called “Quasimodo Sunday,” after the first word of the opening chant, Quasimodo geniti infantes, or “As newborn infants,” a refer-ence to the newly baptized taken from the Epistle of Peter. Victor Hugo’s bell-ringing hero in The Hunchback of Notre Dame was abandoned as an infant on the threshold of the cathedral of Paris on Low Sunday, 1467, and named “Quasimodo” for the feast. —Rev. SO THAT YOU MAY BELIEVE It is not often that the author of one of the books of the Bible comes right out and tells us directly why he is writing what he is writing. In this Sunday’s Gos-pel reading, taken from the conclusion of John’s Gospel, the author tells us that he
has chosen to record these events so “that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name” (20:31). The letter of John echoes this idea by saying that “[e]veryone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God” (5:1)—what we might refer to as being “born again.” Our reading from the Acts of the Apostles for this Second Sunday of Easter shows us exactly what it looks like when believers are born again through faith. PARA QUE CREAS No sucede demasiado a menudo que el autor de uno de los li-bros de la Biblia se dirija directamente a nosotros para explicar-nos por qué está escribiendo lo que está escribiendo. En la lec-tura del Evangelio de este domingo, que pertenece a la conclu-sión del Evangelio según san Juan, el autor nos dice que ha elegido escribir estos acontecimientos para que “crean que Jesús es el Mesías, el Hijo de Dios, y para que, creyendo, ten-gan vida en su Nombre” (20:31). La carta de san Juan retoma esta idea diciendo que: “todo el que cree que Jesús es el Cristo ha nacido de Dios” (5:1); lo que llamaríamos “nacer de nuevo”. Nuestra lectura de los Hechos de los Apóstoles para este Segundo Domingo de Pascua nos muestra exactamente qué sucede cuando los creyentes nacen de nuevo por medio de la fe. Copyright © J. S. NOI GƯƠNG CẦU NGUYẸN CỦA CHÚA GIÊSU Tiếp theo kỳ trước
Nếu bạn đồng ý với tôi rằng Chúa Giêsu đã cầu nguyện ở mọi nơi, mọi lúc, trong mọi biến cố, trong mọi hoàn cảnh vui cũng như buồn trong cuộc sống của Ngài, và tin rằng Thiên Chúa đang hiện diện ở khắp mọi nơi (chứ không phải chỉ ở trong nhà thờ và ở trong nhà Tạm mà thôi!) thì chúng mình hãy thổ lộ, tâm sự, bộc bạch với Chúa tất cả những niềm vui cũng như những nỗi buồn, những thành công cũng như những thất bại, những niềm hạnh phúc cũng như những đau khổ, những sự may mắn và cả những tai ương…lên cho Ngài ở mọi nơi, trong mọi lúc và trong mọi biến cố lớn nhỏ của đời sống chúng mình. • Buổi sáng tinh mơ, khi vừa thức giấc, bạn hãy dâng lời cảm tạ Thiên Chúa đã gìn giữ và ban cho bạn một đêm ngủ an lành và xin Ngài gìn giữ, che chở phù trì trong ngày mới. • Trước khi xe lăn bánh, bạn hãy đọc một vài kinh Kính Mừng, cầu xin Chúa qua Mẹ Maria gìn giữ bạn trên đường được bằng an. Xin Thiên Thần Chúa bảo vệ bạn trên đường đi cũng như khi đi về. • Trước khi vào sở làm, vào văn phòng, vào lớp học, vào nhà máy…bạn hãy khấn xin Chúa Thánh Thần soi sáng, hướng dẫn, bảo vệ, gìn giữ tay chân, miệng lưỡi, hành động … để mọi việc bạn làm trong ngày sẽ toát lên tình yêu thương, sự lạc quan và cảm thông để những người xung quanh nhìn thấy những công việc tốt đẹp [của bạn] làm, mà tôn vinh Cha của [bạn], Đấng ngự trên trời (Mt 5:16). • Khi bạn nhận được lời khen, khi bài viết của bạn được điểm A, khi được ông chủ tăng lương, khen thưởng…hãy nói với Chúa: “Thank God” hoặc “Con cám ơn Chúa” • Khi tâm hồn bất an, khi gia đạo gặp phải những phiền muộn, đau khổ, hay bất hạnh, con cái bệnh tật, đau ốm, cứng đầu cứng cổ, vợ chồng hiểu lầm nhau…hãy thưa với Chúa: “Xin Chúa cứu giúp gia đình con!” hay “Xin Chúa an ủi, nâng đỡ con” • Những lúc bị nghi oan, bị người ta khinh bỉ, dèm pha, chống báng hay hiểu lầm…bạn hãy nói với Chúa: “Xin cho con ơn can đảm để tha thứ cho kẻ bách hại con, và xin Chúa giúp cho con sự kiên nhẫn biết chấp nhận!” Tắt một lời, ở bất cứ nơi đâu, kể cả ở trong restroom, ngoài sân cỏ, trong phòng ngủ, ở phòng khách, nơi nhà bếp, trong xe, nơi sở làm, trong lớp học, ngoài chợ búa, trên giường bệnh, trong phòng Gym, khi đi bộ, khi chờ xe bus…hoặc trong bất cứ hoàn cảnh vui, buồn, thất vọng, cô đơn, chán nản…bạn và tôi hãy tâm sự, hãy trò chuyện với Chúa! Thế nhưng xin bạn đừng quên! Chúng mình hãy cầu nguyện và cầu xin với tâm tình đơn sơ, khiêm tốn và nhất là hãy xin theo thánh ý của Chúa, chứ đừng theo ý của mình! “Lạy Chúa, Nếu Chúa muốn, xin ban cho con ơn này, ơn kia … If you wish, Lord! Please grant me this ..or that ..” (Mt 8:2; Mc 1:40; Lc 5:2). Cầu chúc bạn cũng như gia đình của bạn có một đời sống cầu nguyện kết hiệp mật thiết với Chúa Giêsu Kitô, để nhờ vậy, gia đình và bản thân của bạn sẽ cảm nghiệm được sự bình an, hạnh phúc và niềm vui của Đức Giêsu Kitô Chúa chúng ta hôm nay và mãi mãi. Ý Cầu nguyện tháng 4: Cầu cho các nhà hoạch định và lãnh đạo kinh tế. Xin cho họ can đảm khước từ mô hình kinh tế nhắm loại trừ những phần tử khác và biết tìm ra những phương hướng tốt đẹp mới.

Ngày 25 tháng 11, giáo xứ chúng ta sẽ mừng kỷ niệm 25 năm ngày thành lập! Giáo xứ xin mọi người giúp đỡ để chuẩn bị mừng lễ long trọng. Cha Chánh Xứ Luis và Hội Đồng Mục Vụ đang nhóm lập một ủy ban với thành viên từ các lễ ít nhất một người. Ngày họp đầu tiên của ủy ban sẽ vào ngày 3 tháng 4 lúc

Sáng ngày lễ Phục Sinh, mọi thứ đều có vẻ như đón chào Chúa Sống Lại: mùa Xuân đến, hoa, chim, bướm và mọi người đua sắc, lễ nhạc hoành tráng. Như những nhân chứng trong các bài đọc hôm nay, cuộc sống tươi vui chung quanh giúp chúng ta tin vào sự sống lại và hát “Alleluia!” Chúng ta nghe đến các tông đồ Phêrô, Phaolô và Gioan trong các bài đọc hôm nay. Cả ba vị đều xác quyết việc Đức Kitô sống lại. Phúc Âm Gioan có thêm nhân chứng Maria Mađalêna, cả hai đều loan tin mừng cho mọi người. Hôm nay chúng ta có thể làm chứng Chúa Sống Lại sống động trong đời chúng ta?
