OZONE MONITOR PROBLEMS

• There Are A Number Of Things That Can Go Wrong With Dasibi 1008 Ozone Monitors, Other Than Outright Failures

• Most Problems Cause The Unit To Read Too Low

• Seldom Will Higher Than Expected Readings Occur

ERRATIC OZONE MONITOR

• Usually Turning Off The Unit And Removing The PCB’s One At A Time And Pushing The IC’s Back Into Their Sockets, Then Replacing The PCB’s Cures This Problem.

• Carbon Build-up On The Rotometer Needle Valve Can Cause Pressure Surges. With A Wrench, Unscrew The Needle Valve And Clean With 600 Grit Sandpaper Or Paper Towel And Reinstall.

• If These Two Remedies Don’t Correct The Problem, Remove The Monitor And Send It To The Shop.

LOW OZONE READINGS

• First, Try Cleaning The Absorption Tubes.

• Temperature And Pressure Compensation Can Cause A 30 - 40 ppb Error If Not Properly Set.

– Check The Pressure Reading With The Pump Off. The Pressure Is Read Out In Atmospheres (Barometer Reading In mm Hg/760 mm). In Austin, This Is Usually .980 - .985. Contact Allen Ward For Details On How To Adjust This Setting.

– The Temperature Circuit Should Be Checked Next, Using A Suitable DVM At The Left Side Of The Rear PCB. The Correct Reading For Temperature Calibration is 5.463 Volts DC. Contact Allen Ward For Details On How To Adjust This.

• The Scrubber Can Cause Greatly Reduced Readings. Scrubbers Are Either Replaced Or Refilled Depending On The Model.

OTHER MONITOR PROBLEMS

• The Following Problems Will Most Likely Need Shop Attention.

– Leaking, Dirty, Or Worn Solenoid Valve. This Must Be Cleaned, Rebuilt Or Replaced, Or Perhaps Just Adjusted. This Can Sometimes Cause Erratic Operation.

– Deteriorated O-Rings Cause Low Readings That Sometimes Will Temporarily Disappear When A Steady Stream Of Ozone Is Fed Into The Monitor. These Are Tricky To Replace And Must Be The Correct Size And Material.

– Broken Windows Or Mirrors (Rare) Can Cause Low Or Zero Readings.

TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE

Symptom What Do I DoCals/Spans not flagged correctly Communications problem between Zeno and Dasibi

Check the Hub Error Log web page for Dasibi Dot 21 command non-response

Problem is in the CAMS - the serial line between the Zeno andDasibi is either disconnected or plugged in the wrong serial port onthe Dasibi

Slope and intercept do notchange after a calibration

Calibration was automatically rejected or not recognized by LEADSCheck the Automatic Cal/Val Status file under the System Status web

page to look for messages on sequence check failure - this isprimarily seen when cals or spans are manually initiated not on 5-minute marks and there are “Q” codes embedded between the levels

Check the Database Printout web page or Manual Validation to see ifthe Cal was flagged properlyIf the cal is flagged properly, the calibration failed for one reason

or anotherIf the cal is not flagged properly, check the Hub Error Log web

page for Dasibi Dot 21 command non-responseNot getting data from a CAMS Check the Current Hourly Average web page to see when the

problem started and if it affects other CAMS in your regionAre you getting data from other CAMS in your region?

If Yes, the problem is probably in the CAMS itself, either themodem is not responding or the phone line is dead - Check theSystem Status web page and look at the CommunicationsSummary

If No, the problem is probably at the Hub computer - the modemmay be broken or the phone line is dead - Check the System Statusweb page and look at the Communications Summary

Symptom What Do I DoMet data is flagged as LIM LEADS detected a met gear failure or met data that is outside

prescribed EPA limits and data is being flagged automaticallyWind Speed Limits:

Less than 0 or greater than 25 m/s (55.925 mph)Does not vary by .1 m/s (.2237 mph) over 3 hoursDoes not vary by .5 m/s (1.1185 mph) over 12 hours

Wind Direction Limits:Less than 0 or greater than 360 degreesDoes not vary by 1 degree over 3 hoursDoes not vary by 10 degrees over 18 hours

Outdoor TemperatureValue changes 15 C (27 F) degrees in one hourValue does not vary by .5 C (.9 F) degrees over 12 hours

Dewpoint TemperatureValue is greater than ambient temperatureValue changes 15 C (27 F) degrees in one hourValue does not vary by .5 C (.9 F) degrees over 12 hours

PrecipitationTotal is more than 25mm in one hourTotal if more than 100mm in 24 hours

Barometric PressureValue is less than 940 mb or greater than 1060 mbValue changes more thatn 6 mb in 3 hours

Solar RadiationValue is greater than 0.005 ly/min between 10 pm and 4 amValue greater than 1.94 ly/min anytime

Symptom What Do I DoExceed will not start Not connected to network

Network is down - check your e-mail to see if there is a messagetelling you the network is down

Check your network connection - especially if you are using thenotebook

Contact your local LAN ManagerManual Validation will not start Assuming you are logged in through Exceed correctly, the Unix

machine may have too many processes running to start a new one foryou

There may be a problem with the LEADS software in Austin Contact Barry Dunlap, David Stroud, or Laura Roberts in Austin

Pollution data is flagged as LIM A span or calibration failed and the data is being flaggedautomatically

Check the CAMS Overall Status web page Check the Individual CAMS Status web page Check the Calibration Results or Span Check Results web pages

Pollution data is not flagged asK-Valid

Validators may have changed data flags - data could be flagged asanything

Span check or calibration failed - data will be flagged as LIM Data lost in transmission - data will be flagged as LST - check Hub

Error Log web page to see if there is a gap in the data coming fromthe Zeno - there may have been a power outage, or someone mayhave been reconfiguring the Zeno

Data only shows up as a code inthe Daily Summary or CurrentHourly Average web page

Data that is not flagged K-Valid will only show up as a flag in thesereports

Use the Database Printout web page to view the data directly - youcan see the underlying 5-minute data or the hourly averages alongwith the flags
