Why set data fields? To help us determine where to
focus our time, energy,and resources.
10
THREE QUESTIONSDATA FIELD
1. What group of students do we want to impact?
2. What benchmark (bar) do we want them to reach?
DATA TARGET
3. (goal) How many of the group will reach that benchmark by a given date?
11
QUESTIONS 1 and 2DATA FIELDS1. What group of students do we want to impact?2. What benchmark (bar) do we want them to reach?
Part 1: Analyze current data
Part 2: Select the data fields for improvement
12
Step 1:
Analyze
Current Data
13
Analysis Questions
1. How does our current data compare to our vision data?
2. What data fields please you?
3. What data fields disturb you?
4. What evidence (if any) do you find of achievement gaps?
5. How do teacher grades compare to achievement tests scores?

Task: Current Data Analysis
1. Individual
Place sticky-notes on the poster provided to reflect your response to these questions:
a. How does our current data compare to our vision data?
b. What data fields concern you?
c. What data fields please you?
d. What evidence (if any) do you see of achievement gaps?
e. How do teacher grades compare to achievement test grades?
2. Group
Discuss the sticky notes
FINISH – 11:15Break as Needed

Step 2:
Select
Data Fields
20
WHAT IS A
DATA FIELD?
21
Two parts: 1. STUDENT GROUP (Who will improve?)
2. BENCHMARK (Level of performance?)
Format: The data field is always expressed as a %
% of (student group) who (benchmark)
Example: % of 8th graders who pass 2 sem of Algebra I
% of Class of 2017 who master reading vocab on ISTEP
% of 9th graders who pass 2 sem of Biology.
What is a data field?
22
The student group will result in“Trend” or “Vertical” Data
TREND:
% of ____ graders who __________.
VERTICAL:
% of the class of ____ who _________.
23
BROAD DATA FIELDS
Data targets that are general in nature:
1. % of all students passing ISTEP Math (NCLB)
2. % of all students graduating (NCLB)
3. % of all ISTEP Math tests that are passing (PL221)
4. % of all ISTEP English tests that are passing (PL221)
5. % earning Core 40 diploma (IDOE)
Purpose: Give a general picture of a school
Problem: Don’t inform instruction
24
SPECIFIC DATA FIELDS
Purpose – Inform Instruction
Specific Student Groups • Low Income students• Special education students• Students in a targeted ethnic group• Students in “Homework Club”
Specific Benchmarks • Specific standard or set of standards• Specific course• Specific classroom assessment
25

% of11th Grade Girls
who Pass 2 sem of Chem I
% of 4th Grade whoEarn mastery score on classroom benchmark test
% of4th Grade
HispanicWho

26
Relationship Between Broad and Specific
% of all students passing ISTEP math (NCLB)
• % of third graders passing ISTEP math
• % of Hispanic students passing ISTEP math
• % of all students mastering the “Algebra & Functions” standard on ISTEP
• % of students meeting the math benchmarks on the district benchmark test
27
THINGS TO
CONSIDER
28
ConsiderInSAI Data Field Requirements
1% of all ISTEP Eng & Math tests for a non-mobile group of students (126 days) that are passing (BROAD – PL221)
2At least one Indiana academic standard to inform instruction (SPECIFIC)
3At least one student group showing an achievement gap to inform instruction (SPECIFIC)
29
Consider NCLB and PL221
NCLB PL221 *
• % of students passing ISTEP Math
• % of students passing ISTEP Eng
• % graduating (HS only)
% graduates scoring ___on AP tests
% graduates earning ___on End-of-Course tests
% graduates earning
Core 40 diploma
% graduates earning
Academic Honors Diploma
* For high school placement in top two DOE categories
30
ConsiderSchool’s AYP Report on DOE Website

Consider District Achievement Goals
Indianapolis Public Schools
1. ISTEP+ Language Arts – Each student group
2. ISTEP+ Math – Each student group
3. Writing Standard – Your Choice
4. Reading Standard – Your Choice
5. Math Standard – Your Choice

35
SELECTING THE DATA FIELDS
1. Which group of students would you like to impact?
2. What benchmark (bar) do you want them to reach?
TASK 1: Write your thoughts on the Data Field Personal Reflection sheet.
TASK 2: Transfer your suggestions to the Instagraph
TASK 3: Complete the instagraph
36
Next Steps
Steering Team will . . .
1. Recommend data fields Based on input from the faculty, community and students
2. Recommend data targets
3. Ask you to review their recommendations
