Desarrollo[editareditar cdigo]
As, pues, hemos promulgado con

House of Visconti
Viscontiis the family name of two importantItaliannobledynasties of theMiddle Ages. There are
two distinct Visconti families: The first one (chronologically) in the Republic of Pisain the mid twelfth
century who achieved prominence first in Pisa, then inSardiniawhere they became rulers ofGallura.
The second rose to power inMilan, where they ruled from 1277 to 1447 and where several collateral
branches still exist. The renowned directorLuchino Viscontiis a scion of the family.
The Visconti of Gallura used a cock as their symbol (Gallura meaning 'land of cocks'), whereas the
later Visconti of Milan used abiscione(a great serpent) swallowing aSaracen,or, according to
another version, on the contrary giving l ife to a child. This symbol is still closely connected withMilan.
Any link between the two families in Pisa-Gallura and Milan has yet to be proven.

The first Visconti of note in Pisa wasAlberto, who bore the titlepatrician.Alberto's son,Eldizio, bore
the titles patrician andconsulfrom 1184 to 1185. It was Eldizio's sons,LambertoandUbaldo I,who
brought the family to the height of its influence in Pisa and Sardinia. Both of them carried the title of
patrician and each served a term aspodest.
In 1212 various factions, pro- and anti-Visconti clashed for control over Pisa. In mid-January
1213,William I of Cagliariled a coalition of anti-Visconti forces to victory in battle nearMassaover
the combined forces ofLuccaand the Visconti under Ubaldo. Afterward, Pisa divided power between
fourrectores, one of which was a Visconti. The Visconti of Sardinia continued to take a part in Pisan
politics to the end of the century, but their influence there was greatly diminished after 1213.
In Sardinia Eldizio had married a daughter ofTorchitorio III of Cagliari, who became the mother of
Lamberto and Ubaldo. In 1207, Lamberto marriedElena, the heiress ofBarisone II of Gallura, thus
securing control over the northeastern corner of Sardinia with his capital atCivita. In 1215, he and
Ubaldo established their hegemony over theGiudicato of Cagliariin the south of the island as well.
Through advantageous marriages, Lamberto's son,Ubaldo II,secured power inLogudorofor a time.

The effective founder of the Visconti of Milan,Ottone, wrested control of the city from the rivalDella
Torrefamily in 1277.[1]
The family loved to claim legendary versions about its origins (Fancy genealogies were en vogue at
the time) while established facts reflect quite sober and almost humble beginnings. The branch of the
Visconti family that came to rule Milan was originally entrusted with the lordship of Massino
(nowadaysMassino Visconti), a village aboveLago Maggiore, which they controlled from the twelfth
century.
It is said that the Milanese Visconti had their origins in a family of capitanei(cfr. the modern
surnameCattaneo)whomarchbishop Landulf of Milan(978998) had granted certain feudal holdings
known as caput plebis(at the head, likely in geographical and not hierarchical sense, of thepieve,an
ecclesiastical lesser subdivision). A document from the year 1157 says the Visconti were holders of
the captaincy of Marliano (todayMariano Comense); late chroniclerGalvano Fiammaconfirms this
version. Decades before that, before 1070, they had gained the title ofviscountto be later inherited
down the male line (Biscaro, ASL, "I maggiori dei Visconti di Milano"). The family dispersed into
several branches, some of which were entrusted fiefs far off from the Lombard metropolis;the one
which gave the Medieval lords of Milan is said to be descended from Umberto(d. in the first half of
the 12th century).
The Visconti ruled Milan until the earlyRenaissance, first as Lords, then, from 1395, with the

Rising from rural nobility, the Sforzas becamecondottieriand used this military position to become
rulers in Milan. The family governed by force, ruse, and power politics, similar to
theMediciinFlorence.Under their rule the city-state flourished and expanded.
Muzio Attendolo(13691424), called Sforza (from sforzare, to exert or force), founded the dynasty. A
condottiero fromRomagna,he served theAngevinkings ofNaplesand became the most successful
dynast of thecondottieri.
His sonFrancesco I Sforzaruled Milan for the first half of theRenaissanceera, acquiring the title
ofDuke of Milanfrom the extinctViscontifamily in 1447.
The family also held the seigniory ofPesaro, starting from Muzio Attendolo's second
son,Alessandro(14091473). The Sforza held Pesaro until 1519, with the death ofGaleazzo.
Muzio's third son,Bosio(14111476), founded the branch ofSanta Fiora, who held the title of count
ofCotignola;the Sforza ruled the smallcounty of Santa Fiorain southernTuscanyuntil 1624.
Members of this family also held important ecclesiastical and political position in the Papal States,
and moved to Rome in 1674 taking the name Sforza Cesarini.
The Sforza would later join with theBorgia Family, through thearranged marriageofLucrezia
BorgiatoGiovanni(the illegitimate son ofCostanzo I of Pesaro).[1]
Ludovico Sforza(known as Ludovico il Moro, famous for takingLeonardo da Vinciinto his service)
was defeated in 1500 by the French army ofLouis XII of France- seeItalian Wars.

sent to the castle ofMortaraas a prisoner de facto. He regained his status after a successful
expedition againstLucca.
In 1431, after a period during which he fought again for thePapal States,he led the Milanese army
againstVenice;the following year the duke's daughter,Bianca Maria, was betrothed to him. Despitethese moves, the wary Filippo Maria never ceased to be distrustful of Sforza. The allegiance of
mercenary leaders was dependent, of course, on pay; in 1433-1435, Sforza led the Milanese attack
on the Papal States, but when he conqueredAncona,in theMarche,he changed sides, obtaining the
title of vicar of the city directly fromPope Eugene IV.In 1436-39, he served variously
bothFlorenceand Venice.
In 1440, his fiefs in theKingdom of Napleswere occupied by KingAlfonso I,and, to recover the
situation, Sforza reconciled himself with Filippo Visconti. On October 25, 1441, in Cremona,he could
finally marry Bianca Maria. The following year, he allied with Ren of Anjou, pretender to the throneof Naples, and marched against southern Italy. After some initial drawbacks, he defeated the
Neapolitan commander Niccol Piccinino, who had invaded his possessions in Romagna and
Marche, through the help ofSigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta(who had married his daughter
Polissena) and the Venetians, and could return to Milan.
Sforza later found himself warring against his son Francesco (whom he defeated at the Battle of
Montolmoin 1444) and, later, the alliance of Visconti, Eugene IV, and Sigismondo Malatesta, who
had allegedly murdered Polissena. With the help of Venice, Sforza was again victorious and, in
exchange for abandoning the Venetians, received the title of capitano generale(commander-in-chief)
of the Duchy of Milan's armies.
Duke of Milan[edit source|editbeta]
After the duke died without a male heir in 1447, fighting broke out to restore the so-calledAmbrosian
Republic.[1]
