    ABOUT GOEYVAERTS STRING TRIO

  • HOW WE OPERATE

First and foremost, the Goeyvaerts String Trio is just that- a trio. However, it does not limit itself to any imposed limitations. The composition and the magnitude of the ensemble changes to benefit each pro-gram or project. The artistic organization of the string trio is done by a hard core team of musicians. The cellist Pieter Stas, assisted by the violist Kris Matthynssens, bring their inspired artisticplans to life by digging in archives, dis-cussing with scholars, foraging libraries and intensively studying scores.

For each subject or project, they meticu-lously decide who would be fit to collabo-rate with and who should shine on stage with them.

Pieter and Kris play a major role in the business organisation of the String Trio as well. As a non government-funded foundation trying to survive the current climate, each member of the trio takes on multiple tasks. In addition, they are supported by Sara Lambrecht, an experienced music business professional, who takes on artistic planning tasks remotely.

The Goeyvaerts String Trio is known for sailing its steady yet innovative course. Their commitment to their artistic vision has brought them a world class, high quality reputation

GOEYVAERTS?You could say that Goeyvaerts (1923-1993) was a real pain in the ass for musicologists. To begin with because of his versatility. And also his musical-artistic and personal evolution. Karlheinz Stockhausen said about him that as one of the fathers of serialism, he was setting an example for others. But Goeyvaerts was more than that.

He spent a lifetime exploring music, as a man who was not shy of any dogma or other so-called truths or certainties. He tried out all new developments - if he had not developed them himself - with works that made use of tape, aleatoricism and jazz and pop music influences. Although Goeyvaerts’ music is eccentric, it’s functional and reasoned, and it is so much more than the simple use of effects.

The Goeyvaerts String Trio wishes to honor one of Belgium’s greatest composers. This is done not only by wearing his name but also by a similar mindset whereby each piece is looked at as an autonomous work. Dogma’s freeze and, security is always questioned.

    HOW WE CAME TO BE

Over a century ago, Schönberg served anelectroshock to classical music with hisdodecaphony (or twelve-tone technique). The worn habits and rules about harmony - like the doctrine of the classic European canon - were dumped into the trash can. Instead, there was room for experiment and adventure alongside control and ratio. Like Schönberg, his student Anton Webern saw the string trio as the genre in which he could let off some steam. Three voices could clash, grind and crush and then follow their own path. But even after dodecaphony reshaped music composing, there were still composers who specifically wrote for the string trio. The string trio as a genre or a piece of music is not loaded with a heavytradition, therefore encouraging free thinking. For composers like Anton Webern, Arnold Schoenberg,La Monte Young, and Alfred Schnittke, the string trio guarantees experimentation. Composing string trios did not only mean a break in their own style but alsosetting a new landmark in music history.

“My musical development took a course similar to that of some friends and colleagues, across piano concerto romanticism, neoclassic

INVITATION TO TAL-LINN BY THE ARVO

    PÄRT CENTER

This september 2017, the String trio has been per-sonally invited by Tonu

Kaljuste to join the annu-al Pärt festival in Tallinn.

They will perform their internationally acclaimed

program Stabat Mater. Not only did the Pärt family openly praised the re-

cording of this interesting piece, but recently the son of Arvo Pärt - Michael Pärt - attended the concert of the same program. This

concert was organised as part of the conference con-cerning the sacred music of the composer Arvo Pärt Sounding the Sacred by

the Lincoln Center in New York. Michael Pärt met

    with the musicians after-

wards to express his grat-itude and praise for their

performance of his father’s composition. When in

Tallinn, the Goeyvaerts Trio will meet up with the Pärt family again and discuss possible future collabora-

    tions.

    A NEW PROGRAM & COMMISSIONED

WORK BY WUORINEN I.A.W. GUGGENHEIM NYThe established and

worldly renowned Gug-genheim Museum in New York has commissioned the Pulitzer prizewinning

    American contempo-rary classical composer

Charles Wuorinen to compose a second String Trio to celebrate his own

80th birthday with the Goeyvaerts String Trio as

performers in mind. Wu-orinens first string trio was written in 1968 and pre-miered with a dance per-formance. The 28th/29th

of October 2018, this new commissioned work will premiere at the Guggen-heim Museum New York,

together with the first string trio, both performed

by the Goeyvaerts Trio accompanied by a con-

temporary dance ensem-ble. Later that season, the program will travel around other renowned venues across US and Europe.

This collaboration came to a start when the trio re-

ceived the following email in 2010: “Dear Goeyvaerts

String Trio, Wanted you to know Wuorinen was

very impressed with your Schoenberg CD. I write to draw your attention to the music of American com-poser CHARLES WUO-RINEN, and in particular

to his (amazing) STRING-TRIO – a major addition to the repertoire....” This short and modest message was the start of a correspond-ence with Howard Stoker,

    EXCITING PLANS

  • live partner and manager of Charles Wuorinen. In july 2016, the following mes-sage came: “Dear Pieter, Works and Process at the Guggenheim Museum NY do want to be part of the

commission....” A short and powerful message became

a long conversation re-sulting in a meeting in NY and the realisation of this unique opportunity for the String Trio: a creation in

2018 of a new work by one the most important Ameri-can post-war composers.

    CROSSOVER COLLABORATION

WITH ROBIN VERHEYEN, MARC CO-PLAND & THE J. PAUL GETTY MUSEUM LOS

    ANGELESHaving been selected both

as artist in residence for the reopening of the Konin-klijk Museum voor Schone

Kunsten (Museum for Fine Art) in Antwerp, only speeded up the process

of a collaboration. For the last couple of years, both Robin Verheyen and the

Goeyvaerts Trio have been flirting with the idea of a profound collaboration.

But it was only after Robin played at the trio’s Festival Passages, and their mutual selection of the KMSKA in Antwerp, that this collab-oration took on concrete forms. At 33, Robin Ver-heyen is considered one of the top European jazz

saxophone players. Having established himself since 2007 in NYC he quickly build a reputation there

and has worked with such jazz heavyweights as Gary Peacock, Marc Copland, Ralph Alessi, Bill Carroth-ers, Drew Gress and many others. His latest release ‘A Look Beyond’ with his NY quartet was received with critical acclaim and

he was awarded a grant by Chamber Music America to write new music for this group. The result of the collaboration between

Robin Verheyen, Marc Co-pland and the Goeyvaerts Trio will premiere in the

KMSKA before travelling to the Getty Museum LA. Conversations to schedule these performances are in

    an advanced stage.

    PASSAGES FESTIVAL V

Each year in February, the Goeyvaerts Trio organises

their own cutting edge festival. Taking place in their home town of Sint-

Niklaas, the festival hous-es in the unconventional

location of the SteM. 2018 will mark their 5th

edition. High expectations have already been raised

as previous editions always sell out weeks before the event. The edition of 2018 will host the ancient music of Cappella Mariana (CZ) with their Songs of Love, the new jazz album of Su-sanne Abbuehl (CH) and vocal work of mezzo-so-

prano Mireille Capelle. Of course the Goeyvaerts String trio will perform a new piece, always chal-lenging and inspiring the audiences to reconsider

their views on the live consummation of classical

music. With its varying programming of each edi-tion, the trio has grown an established audience for the Passages Festival.

  • PROJECT “SLOW” IN COLLABORATION

    WITH CONCERT-

    GEBOUW BRUGGEFor the festival SLOW,

organised by the Concert-gebouw Brugge, a newly commissioned work will

be composed by Jürg Frey for the Goeyvaerts String Trio. This work will be part of a performance in which

experience and inspira-tion will be a central focus point. The audience will be challenged to localise the sound, discover the music and use all of their senses during the performance. The piece, as well as the

performance, will be more than music. It will include an installation and the use of electronic equipment to enhance the experience.

The composer will include these electronic aspect in this newly composed

    piece for the trio.

SPIRITUAL LAB: THE GOEYVAERTS STRING TRIO & ZSUZSI TÓTHThe composer as a me-dium. Giacinto Scelsi

and Hildegarde Van Bin-gen in a confrontation.

A soundscape of higher atmospheres, visions and

higher dimensions. Gi-acinto Scelsi achieves the highest form of intimacy in his written pieces for

strings. “Elegia per Ty”, is commemorated to his -to young- deceased wife; it is one of his most abiding

works. He himself de-scribes it as a research

to a third dimension in the sound, an invisible dimen-

sion, as invisible as the visions Hildegarde Van Bingen had. Her music attempts to give a voice to this ecstatic intimacy. Is sound much more sig-nificant and expressive

than words or images? Of Scelsi, there are hardly

any images that survived time? Is he the Banksy of the classical music? The Goeyvaerts String Trio

researched the roots of this invisable man in the

Fondazione Scelsi in Rome. Zsuzsi Toth dove

into the musical testament Hildegarde Van Bingen.Works: Giacinto Scelsi:

String Trio | Elegia per Ty / Hildegarde Von Bingen

KLÄRTE NACHT A synthesis of late-roman-tic music in one concert:

    • Verklärte Nacht for sextet - Schönberg

    • Five movements for string quartet Opus 5 - Webern

    • String Trio Opus 45 - Schönberg

    • Langsamer Satz for string quartet - Webern

This program shows that dodecaphonic music was

born from the hyper-roman-tic idiom and strives for

    absolute expression.
