Objectives of the Training
1. To refresh selected gender concepts so as to have better understanding for engendering the VCD.
2. To share experience among participants on gender issues and related concepts in various VC projects.

(Option 1) Matching and Gallery Walk Exercise
Please discuss and match selected gender concepts: Words, phrases with their corresponding definitions.
Tips: Time allowed: 45’ First, brainstorm the meaning for the word, phrase or
definition you have, Then, move around, discuss with your partner & find the
right match for the word, phrase or definition you have, Once you both reached at consensus, post them on the wall
the wall, Finally, do gallery walk to see, refresh and comment on
matching by others. 3

Discuss and identify major gender issues and their implications.

Gender Roles
These are different tasks, responsibilities
and expectations that the society has defined and prescribed to men and women; girls and boys.

Gender Division of Labour
The work, roles, and responsibilities assigned to
women and men based on gender,
which is unfairly happened

Productive Role
Work done by both women and men for pay in cash or kind, while mainly monopolized by men.
Done in the public sphere & Valued & recognized as “real job”
E.g. Employment, agri for cash, business for money.

Reproductive Role
Child rearing responsibilities and domestic tasks done by women or/and
men, required to guarantee the maintenance of the family.
E.g. domestic and care work such as cooking, cleaning, childcare and looking
after sick relatives, subsistence agriculture, and collecting water, fuel and
wild food.

Community Role
Activities undertaken at the community level by men and women;
as an extension of their productive and reproductive role, to ensure the provision and maintenance of social expectations;
This is “voluntary” and unpaid work, undertaken in 'free' time.
E.g. Helping neighbours, organizing social events, and so on.
Reproductive and Community work tend to be unpaid and taken for granted

Practical Gender Needs
These are gender needs that women and men can easily identify, as they relate to living conditions for immediate needs.
Focuses on improving conditions.
It does not challenge the structure.

Strategic Gender Needs
These are gender based needs about getting more choices, more options or more voice.
They focus on fundamental issues related to women's and men's subordination & gender inequities.
It refers a long-term need like structural change such as legislation for equal rights and challenges the system.
Focuses on improving position.
Gender Equity
Means fairness of treatment for women and men according to their respective needs.
May include equal treatment, but often women and men need to receive different treatment in order to receive the same benefits and to experience their rights.
It often requires built-in measures to compensate for the historical and social disadvantages of women (such as restrictions on mobility or access to education). Or it may mean projects are targeted to women only

Gender Equality
Both men & women are free to develop their personal abilities & make choices without the limitations set by stereotypes, rigid gender roles, or prejudices.
It does not mean that women and men have to become the same, but that their rights, responsibilities & opportunities will not depend on whether they are born male or female.
It means an equal visibility & empowerment of both sexes in all spheres of public and private life.

activities - policy development, research, advocacy/ dialogue, legislation, resource allocation, and planning, implementation
and monitoring of programms and projects.

It is a strategy for making women’s as well as men’s concerns, experiences
and needs an integral dimension of the design,
implementation, monitoring and evaluation of policies and programmes
in the socio-economic and political spheres so that women and men
benefit equally, and inequality is not perpetuated.
