Trans-Atlantic Platform – Digging into Data
• Large-scale digital data analysis in social sciences and humanities
• Multidisciplinary collaborative projects in digital scholarship
Digging into Linked Parliamentary Data Christopher Cochrane, University of Toronto Scarborough
This project brings together political scientists, historians and computational linguists, from Canada, The Netherlands and the UK, to
enable large-scale analysis of the proceedings of three parliaments, from c.1800 to the present day. This data reflects any event of significance over the past 200 years, and will be enhanced during the course of the project
to shed light on developments across different nations, cultures and systems of political representation.

• Research on or for social innovation
• Trans-Atlantic collaboration in this research call will facilitate:
ü addressing social challenges faced on both sides of the Atlantic
ü learning from the experiences of multi-sectoral collaboration for social innovation practiced on both sides of the Atlantic
ü the applying and adapting approaches from one locale to another
ü generalizing and/or scaling-up of local experiences

Joint Programming Initiative - More Years, Better Lives
• Enhance coordination and collaboration between European and Canadian research programs related to demographic change
• Support multi-disciplinary and multi-sectoral research through joint calls for proposals

Open Research Area
• Started as an agreement between research funding agencies in four European countries in 2010.
• SSHRC joined the 6th Call of ORA in 2019 alongside Agence nationale de la recherche in France; Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft in Germany; and the Economic and Social Research Council in the United Kingdom. The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science is an associate partner.
• ORA 6 will provide funding for integrated projects by researchers coming from at least three countries.
• Goals:
ü Funding curiosity-driven, high-quality research
ü Strengthen international cooperation

2. Domestic Joint Initiatives
• International Development Research Centre (IDRC)
ü integral part of Canada’s foreign affairs and development efforts
ü invests in knowledge, innovation, and solutions to improve the
lives of people in the developing world
• IDRC-SSHRC Joint Initiatives:
ü International Research Initiative on Adaptation to Climate Change
ü International Partnerships for Sustainable Societies

2. Domestic Joint InitiativesInternational Research Initiative on Adaptation
to Climate Change • Address the knowledge gap in climate change through
rigorous research in Canada and across four continents• Anticipate, manage, and reduce climate risk vulnerability
through adaptation

Adapting to Climate Change: Protecting Water Resources in West Africa and Canada
Taha Ouarda, Institut national de la recherche scientifique
Significant gaps remain in our knowledge about the real and potential consequences of climate risks based on a population’s level of vulnerability; the effectiveness of monitoring, warning, and emergency response systems; and relevant indicators for gauging the effectiveness of adaptation policies on health. Improving access to the
available knowledge on vulnerability to climate change remains a challenge in Tafilalet, Morocco, Niamey, Niger, as well as in the province of Québec, Canada.
