Primary Objective

– Enable research to be optimised by public and private funders in a more effective manner

– Enable new and improved tools to be developed and delivered

– Control of the major diseases of animals, including zoonoses

Complementary work strands

1. Provide a validated database and peer review methodology in order to prioritise infectious animal diseases

2. Gap analysis to identify areas where:– information and knowledge of the disease is

deficient– Current tools are lacking, inadequate or could be

improved

3.Identify current and new technological tools that may be used to improve the ability to control infectious animal diseases

– Review of existing arrangements by stakeholders

– Development of methodologies to identify and evaluate new technology

coordination of the project involving all stakeholders

• WP2: Prioritise diseases

- Assemble up to date information from experts (drawn from stakeholders and individuals)

- Place it on a public website- Invite input- Update via approval of experts

- 1st meeting held in Brussels on the 20th October 2008 in DG RESEARCH Offices

- Important range of stakeholders: pharmaceutical industry, diagnostic industry, international organisations, universities, agriculture and food…

- Outcome: 1. Good and open discussions on prioritisation methods and criteria to

score the diseases.2. Definition of a set of actions to implement before next meeting on

the 10th of March 2009:

- Mainly an agreed list of criteria on which to base prioritisation and a disease database for prioritisation and gap analysis information

WP3: Gap analysis of the priority diseases

- develop a methodology for gap analysis - Invite stakeholder representatives to decide on the

critical gaps- Aim research at filling the gaps

WP3: Gap analysis of the priority diseases

- 1st meeting held in Brussels on the 24th October 2008 in DG RESEARCH Offices

- Good representation of stakeholders- Outcome: 1. Good and open discussions on Gap Analysis methods and criteria2. Definition of a set of actions to implement before next meeting on

the 31st of March 2009:- Inventory of Gap Analysis methods, propose a list of experts on

each disease, provide comments on the criteria chosen by WP2.

WP4: Identify and evaluate new technologies

- Horizon scan for new technologies

- Human health, biotechnology, crop protection, nanotechnology, chemistry, biocides, etc.

- Ensure deployment in the animal health sector as early as possible

- 1st meeting held in Brussels on the 31st October 2008 in DG RESEARCH Offices

- Good representation of stakeholders and technology industries

- Outcome: 1. Discussions on current and future technologies in Animal health

and other sectors.

2. Definition of a set of actions to identify useful new technologies, to be implemented before next meeting on the 24th of March 2009.

- DG Research and the ERA-Net in prioritising research

- DG Sanco in the context of the Community Animal Health Policy – CAHP

- EFSA and ECDC in attempting to prioritise zoonoses and to look at emerging zoonoses

Coordination with the ETPGAH

- DISCONTOOLS is a tool first described in the ETPGAH Action Plan

- The project has a short life-time

- ETPGAH is fixed and a long-term initiative

- Mirror groups communication on their national activities with an influence on National Research
