1 DIGITAL LIBRARIES COLLECTION Susie Seefelt Lesieutre 8 December 2013 Scholastic Paperback Book Covers: 1966-1971 1 Collection Description The digital collection, “Scholastic Paperback Book Covers: 1966-1971” comprises a portion of 10 paperback titles published by Scholastic Book Services during a five year period in the late 1960s and the early 1970s. For each book, both the front and back covers have been scanned as well as the title page, creating a compound object for each title in CONTENTdm. These titles represent my reading tastes when I was an elementary school student: mysteries, stories about witches, and some of my favorite characters of all—Pippi Longstocking, Homer Price, and the Moffats. I have several reasons for wanting to digitize these titles. First, there is undoubtedly a sentimental reason for selecting these books to work with: I have fond memories of ordering these books through my teachers in school and receiving the books in school the day they arrived. It was always such a treat to handle the new books the teacher placed on my desk; they were like a present, even though I had selected each one several weeks before, and I loved the smell of the paper and ink and anticipated each read. But I can identify other reasons for selecting these and giving them a digital space. In many cases, Scholastic books from this time period are considered “vintage” and are only available on eBay or abebooks.com; additionally some are available on Amazon.com via used book sellers— in other words, they are hard to find and thus difficult to study. Because of this, I have identified several reasons why digital surrogates of these books would provide value. First, many current digitization projects focus on historical materials from earlier in the 20 th century and before; there is very little attention being paid to materials of any kind from the late 1960s and the early 1970s. Yet print items from this time period are aging as well, especially the acidic, brittle paper, and are in need of preservation. Preserving these in a digital format is a valid reason for digitization. Second, print culture historians studying this time period would welcome a collection such as this. Although these books were cheaply produced, Scholastic paperbacks were some of the first affordable books that were intended for a young audience; they reached millions of children around the country. Paperbacks were first introduced in the United States in 1938, an initiative that later emerged as the publisher Pocket Books. When Pocket Books started to collaborate with Scholastic Magazine in 1945, paperback books finally had a large distribution
