One thing the staff body here at Taunton School has in common is our role as tutor, and yet, having given this article some thought, it strikes me that of all our duties it is perhaps this area and function that offers the most variety and diversity. It is a role that inevitably demands the tutor deal with the individual, responding to his or her differing needs over the year, allowing a unique experience that is anything but common.

At this stage in the term, with report writing and the ensuing proof-reading looming, it can be all too easy to focus on the more onerous aspects of the role. However, as the school year nears its end, it also seems the perfect time to reflect on the more enjoyable and rewarding moments.

For the last few years I have looked after the Year 9 boarders in Fairwater; boys who have, by and large, been thrown in at the deep end, confronted by a new school, a new home, and a new extended family. Each year, I therefore have the opportunity to see the school through new eyes, helping with what is often a disparate group navigate a disorientating environment, and, often, culture and language.

I should mention that, in my first year here, new to the school and the profession, it was often the other way around. My then Year 10 tutees were soon accustomed to

having to guide me not only through the labyrinth that is Fairwater, but also through the everyday processes of the school, more often than not correcting my various pronouncements and declarations…

It seems to me that a boarding house tutor group can offer a microcosm of the wider school environment; a group of students from diverse nationalities with different upbringings and varying outlooks, undergoing new experiences, learning new lessons, and forging new friendships.

One notable advantage about having a Year 9 group is that, without the stress of external exams, there is perhaps the opportunity for a more convivial atmosphere. As such, for me, the best tutor sessions are those when the group just chat, with no particular agenda to follow, affording unguarded moments when perhaps you most clearly see the person behind the pupil.

A BRIGHT FUTURE FOR FUSION

It may be the end of the competition for our very own Young Enterprise team, but it's certainly not the end of FUSION. Unfortunately our budding entrepeneurs did not quite make it to the National Finals, but making it to Regionals alone is a fantastic achievement!

It has been quite the journey, which has seen the charity bracelet sold across several platforms in Somerset, including the popular 'Eat Taunton' festival, and supported by local charities and cricket stars.

Well done to all pupils who were involved in this project - you should all be extremely proud!

We have two exciting opportunities to join our catering team!

We are currently seeking a chef and an apprentice chef to join our friendly kitchen team. Working to prepare and cook food on a daily basis and to assist with the safe, hygenic and efficient running of the department.

ARTWORK OF THE WEEK

Last Saturday 11 budding F1 drivers (and two elder statesman) celebrated the end of exam season by travelling to Thruxton Kart Centre, where they pitted their wits against each other and unleashed their inner-Lewis Hamilton.

The ‘Grand Prix’ event took place on a 900m outdoor track that included plenty of hairpins, chicanes and long straights, which ensured that all of the drivers were kept on their toes! A practice session, followed by two heats, allowed us to decide on race order for the final where, unlike the England cricket team, Ian Stevens capitalised on home-

field advantage to start the final session at the front of the grid.

The final was tough but exciting and saw many grid movements, mechanical problems and retirements but, at the end of the day, there can be only one winner and in first place was Kirill Shepelev who was joined on the podium by Matvey Sintsov and Angel Trakov. There was much dispute from Mr Steven’s, TSI's Housemaster, who apparently had a ‘faulty Kart’, or so he thought! Overall, a fantastic outing enjoyed by all.

Heineken is best known for his assemblages of found images from magazine pages and for photographs containing iconography. Coco was interested in high tonal contrasts and achieving a subtle story with her images.

She studied iconography and re-created these poses in her own photographs. She then layered the images on Photoshop and in the dark room, before applying a variety of post-production techniques.

Think big, dream big“Success is not final, Failure is

not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”-Winston Churchill.

As a Sixth Former approaching the end of her first year, I have had countless opportunities and titles displayed to me with the promise of respect, power, praise, and so on. Being in such an encouraging school gives you the ability to want and attain positions other than the obvious; one of being a student, which many of us aspire to be more than.

With the increased availability of social media, a community of

dispensed angst, mixed with humour, is present, and a shared sense of general lack in self confidence is perceptible. We sometimes turn to find comfort in knowing that if we do not put ourselves forward for something, we can’t fail or be rejected. However, we fail to process that by not going for something, one thing is certain; we don’t get it!

We end up dreaming of what we can see as achievable for our self-lowered view and not for what we truly aspire to reach. Undeniably, it is much easier to set ourselves small goals to work for at a consistent rate.

However, we shouldn’t shy away from the big dreams we have for ourselves and what we see ahead in the bigger picture.

It is important to acknowledge others opinons for various reasons, such as understanding what is seen as acceptable and unacceptable by a majority. Nevertheless, you should never let someone else decide your self worth. Your opinion of yourself matters.

#LOVESTEM: A TASTE OF SENIOR SCHOOLHere at Taunton School we are very proud of

our STEM programme and take pride in our design and technology departments. As such, over the past fortnight we have been inspiring the next generation through workshops and taster sessions.

Last week we welcomed Year 6 pupils from Nether Stowey, who took part in an engineering workshop. They had fun taking part in a bridge building and robotics exercise which helped to develop their engineering and teamwork skills.

This week we also welcomed our Year 8s for a morning dedicated to the micro:bit; a pocked sized computer that can be controlled to perform a range of tasks. This was part of their Year 9 Induction, giving them a taste of how STEM works in the Senior School. We hope they were inspired by the day and continue to enjoy the curriculum!

Olympian Kate to join end of year celebration

TSIMS celebrate first Creative Arts Garden Party

Taunton School’s traditional end of year “Commemoration and Prize Giving” event will welcome GB Olympic Gold Medal winning hockey player Kate Richardson-Walsh OBE as a special guest speaker.

Taking place on the last day of term, 30th June, the event is a celebration of the year at Taunton School and awards are given to students for outstanding achievements.

Many will remember the epic 2016 Olympic final in Rio, when Kate Richardson-Walsh captained the women’s field hockey team to their first gold medal at an Olympics. The team were undefeated throughout the

tournament and won the final after an intense penalty shoot-out. Kate Richardson-Walsh was also selected to be the Team GB flag bearer at the closing ceremony.

Taunton School Headmaster Lee Glaser said: “We are honoured to be joined by such an admired guest speaker at our end of year celebration. Kate Richardson-Walsh is a highly respected sportswoman, who will no doubt inspire all those who have the pleasure of attending this event.”

Guest Preacher, Rt Rev'd Ruth Worsley, Bishop of Taunton will also be part of the event, which celebrates the achievements of the students of Taunton School at the end of the academic year.

Last Saturday, blessed with dry weather, Taunton School International Middle School hosted their first Creative Arts Summer Garden Party.

In the beautiful grounds of The Grange, students excitedly prepared Garden Games such as Connect Four, Snakes and Ladders, and Giant Jenga. Stalls were set up for music and art quizzes, a tasty cake sale, an exotic plant sale, and a ‘Name the Gnome’ competition.

All the students contributed to the inspirational Art Gallery which was displayed in the Forest Classroom; various talented musicians serenaded us throughout the afternoon with a mixture of pop and classical music. Our students welcomed over 100 guests: some from the local village; others from the Taunton School community.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their generous donations and thoughtfulness. A grand total of £765.75 was raised for the Himalayan Children charity.

SPORTS ROUND-UPProud to host 2nd XI Championship

CRICKET OUTREACH AT STOGUMBEROur Director of Cricket,

Pete Sanderson delivered an outreach training session at Stogumber Cricket Club last week, aided by Sam Loud and our overseas coach, Blake Coburn, plus three Sixth Form boys, James Gamble, Henry and Patrick Lee.

This was for Stogumber CC ,Crowcombe, Dunster, and Roadwater. The aim was to demonstrate

what the Taunton School cricket programme offers young players and helped Stogumber to structure and deliver future sessions.

This is part of an overall outreach programme we are looking to offer. Taunton School would like to thank all those who attended and Stogumber for hosting the event.

This week we were honoured to host the Second XI Championship between Somerset and Glamorgan.

The great weather meant that lots of spectators turned out to watch the iconic game, which took place over three consecutive days, with many staff and students taking advantage of the event.

Here are Taunton School we are extremely lucky to have such strong cricket connections and a dedicated team of coaches.

We look forward to hosting more games in the future and welcoming back our fantastic home team.

THIS WEEK'S SWIMMINGTaunton School swimmers unstoppable at

prestigious Meade King Cup gala

A huge congratulations to our swimmers who won all six trophies in the Meade King Cup Swimming Gala last Friday.

It is the first time any school has won all six trophies at the annual event, which is competed between Taunton School, Queen’s College, King’s College and Wellington School. The prestigious gala is allegedly the oldest swimming competition in the world between more than two schools and is regarded as the event of the swim season among local schools. Going into the competition following our third consecutive un-beaten season, we had high expectations, and the swimmers did not disappoint.

The cup is made up of an eclectic mix of events, with three races per age group. First up was Imogen Childs in the U14 girls 50m breaststroke. With all swimmers level going in to the turn, Imogen came off the turn strongly and ended up with a comfortable win.

This set the tone for the rest of the competition, with the girls winning 10/12 Meade King Cup events

and coming second in two. Winners included: Imogen Childs, Skyla Coates x2, Hannah Ashby, Robyn Edwards x2, Abi Norman x2, Mandy Cheng, Lydia Lavallin x2, Alicia Gallagher, Georgia Williams, Emily Lawton, Freya Tyler and Millie Tyler. The boys won 6/12, came second in four and third in two. Winners included: Oliver Halliday x2, George tester x2, William Perry x2, George Perry, Alex Male, Archie Prosser, James Fisher, Ilija Kirilenko and Canes Arslan.

The girls were again unstoppable, winning the Girls Open Freestyle Relay by 10 seconds. The last cup of the evening was the Canon Relay, which saw eight swimmers from each school, one girl and one boy from each age group swimming in any order! This was the final race of the evening, which saw captains Robyn Edwards and Louis Norman llead the 30 strong team to victory.

Two records were broken during the competition, the Boys Open Freestyle Relay by Louis Norman, William Perry, Harry Aziz and Ilija Kirilenko, and the Chris Walsh Cup by

Louis Norman, Harry Aziz, Luis Parades-Tarazona, James Coleman, Robyn Edwards, Lydia Lavallin, Millie Tyler and Emily Yap. In the latter, we were dominant with an impressive joint time of 4:18:36.

Lisa Manley, our Head of Swimming, said: “This was a fantastic way to finish off swim season. Well done to everyone involved, a team effort with every swimmer contributing massively to the event.”

THIS WEEK'S TENNISAn unbeatable run for Taunton School

It was another good match for the Taunton School tennis boys with the 1st & 2nds enjoying convincing victories over Clifton College, 7-2 & 6-3 respectively.

The unbeaten run continues for both the 1st team and for captain Luke Budnyj who has won all his matches to date this year, as well as going unbeaten last year. Antonio Bennasser Verger kicked off his 1st team debut with an excellent 6-1 win over Clifton 2nd pair and he will no doubt make selection difficult next weekend as we welcome back Laurenz Zeifang.

The 3rds had a tougher day, eventually going down 6-3, but an impressive display from Paul Morane & Pascal Jones will no doubt put them in with a shout of 2nd team selection next weekend in the final school fixture of the year.

Valiant effort from Girls tennis teams This week, we played Canford

in a block fixture involving all the girls teams from seniors through to under 14s. The senior girls 1st and 2nd VI made the long trip to Canford on Saturday which proved to be one of our toughest fixtures of the year, with the added complication of Amelia Davis not being available for selection due to a county athletics competition. The girls put in a valiant display but both teams eventually lost their respective matches 6-3.

Our under 15s and 14s home fixture had a delayed start of an hour due to the Canford team bus getting caught up in heavy traffic - which didn't help our girls as they had to warm up 3 times. The visitors

sent extremely strong teams and although the overall scores seemed very one sided, most games went to deuce and if the odd point had gone our way the outcome would've been very different. It was great to hand Hetty James (Year 8) her senior school debut and she certainly put in a good display winning one of her matches.

Our second fixture of the week was against Heathfield School on Thursday with teams consisting of two under 15 pairs and two under 14 pairs. Both teams showed their improvement over the season with the 15s gaining a convincing 5-1 win with the under 14s winning 4-2.

THIS WEEK'S CRICKET

1st XI - Taunton 78 ao Wellington 79-3

This was not a good toss to have won as there was more moisture than expected in the pitch and this was exploited by the Wellington bowlers. All the batters struggled as wickets fell at regular intervals. The only bright note was seeing how comfortably Year 10 pupil, Oscar Samuel played.

In the field, Taunton showed real character and fight to make Wellington work to complete a victory. Jack Houston found the edge 3 times in his first over before getting wickets with his 7th and 8th balls. The victory was completed after a third wicket was taken.

2nd XI – Taunton 87-4 (20 overs); Wellington 91-3

Wellington’s insistence on playing a 20 over match when time would permit a more orthodox, proper game was frustrating. Some players obviously preferred to get home for the football while our wish has always been to play a longer format which provides a better test of batters, bowlers and game management.

Batting first we scored slowly and 89 - 4 looked to be at least thirty runs too few at tea. Allen Vitug batted well for 30; well supported at the end by Dan Gurr (17*). Prospects looked hopeful when Henry Mancini took 2

wickets with the first 2 balls of their innings. Sadly, this was a rare flicker as catches were dropped and eventually, as happens in the shorter form of the game, one player got going, scoring 70* off just 46 balls, hitting cleanly over short boundaries.

3rd XI – Wellington 80ao; Taunton

The 3rd team carried on their pre-half term form where they repeated another excellent fielding performance. There was a welcome return for Luis Parades-Tarazona who was among the wickets as was Zach Tyler; both claiming 3 wickets to dismiss Wellington for 80. Captain Tom Bird led from the front as the small total was easily chased down in another convincing victory for the 3rd XI.

15A – Taunton 120ao; Wellington 121-1

In what was a closer match than the score suggests, Taunton batted first and posted a score of 120 all out in the 26th over. The only major contribution came from Miles Lemon, who was lower in the order this week but still took his opportunity. His partnership with Paddy Doherty gave Taunton a chance after most of the earlier batters got starts but didn’t produce a significant score.

In the field, Taunton worked hard under the leadership of Matthew Holland, in the absence of Samuel to the 1st XI, and contained Wellington until the 28th over. Taunton, however, did not take the wickets required to fully apply enough pressure. There were tight spells by Paddy Doherty and George Clark with Billy Williams-Pritchard taking the only wicket in a 9 wicket defeat.

14A – Taunton 129-8; Wellington 132-5;

The Foals A team lost to Wellington in the last over of a see-saw game. Taunton batted first and got off to a relatively slow start. They looked in danger of posting a low total thanks to a Wellington hat trick leaving them at 49-5 from 14 overs. But some fine striking from Edwards saw him reach 54 and with support from Prosser and Pomeroy the score reached 129 from the allotted 25 overs.

In response, Wellington started well against some tight bowling, and wickets were hard to come by. The opposition looked on course to finish the game off until the breakthrough came which was quickly followed by others. Fletcher bowled a very controlled spell of 2-8, meaning that 4 runs were needed off the last over. The winning runs were struck with 4 balls to spare and Taunton were left rueing the small mistakes that can prove costly in such a tight game.
