Commodore’s Comments September is the beginning of the end of summer, with
the start of school and summer schedules winding
down. Unfortunately our boating season is also soon
coming to a close. We just spent a great weekend racing
to Manitowoc for the annual club Rendezvous. This is a
great annual tradition that invites members and boaters
to gather for a summer party.
Years ago when the fleet was more cruising oriented,
many boats would head out together to spend vacation
time on the water. The rendezvous spot was always chosen carefully and
it would change from year to year. Some past locations included
Kewaunee, Marinette, and Peninsula State Park in Door County. These
parties would give the chance for members to drive and meet those who
were traveling by boat. In more recent years, the party has been planned
around the annual race to Manitowoc. It still offers a great chance to re-
lax with old friends and meet some new ones.
This month, I would like to share a little about the racing experience
itself. Boats headed out on Saturday, 18 August to find strong winds and
rolling waves. We all spend time and energy guessing what the wind and
weather will do. Do we race along the shore? Do we go way out? All
boats have these choices and everyone does it differently. In the long run,
the wind stayed steady and the seas laid down. It made for a pretty nice
run to Manitowoc, even though we could not fly our kites. It was a long
race this year. Five hours for us. That is longer than most races to Mani-
towoc. However, nothing like my race this year to Mackinac Island,
which took 61 hours!
Thank you to Dawn Vertz for organizing this year’s party. Everyone
enjoyed pizza and other great food on the upper deck of the Manitowoc
Marina. Thank you to the crew of SlipKnot for providing the beer. Great
fun was had by all! Consider joining the party next year; all are welcome.
On Sunday, when we set out to race home, the race didn’t look too
promising. There was very little wind at the start and some boats did not
even put up their sails. The wind slowly filled in, the lighter boats took
off, and all enjoyed a steady breeze to bring us back to our home port.
The cruisers stopped to swim in the beautiful water off Whistling
Straights. The racers enjoyed flat seas and sunshine. These are the days
we will remember in the dead of winter. I am proud of our club’s racing
fleet and the camaraderie that we enjoy. Thank you Dave Bronson for
heading up our racing program and all you do!
If you attend only one meeting a year, this is it. Your club will elect
new leadership this coming month. Please come to the monthly member-
ship meeting to vote for the future leaders of your club.
Please also remember to get your hours in by the end of September if
you signed up for Dues Work Off this year.
See you at our club!
~Commodore Mike

Barge Report
Status. Work on the detailed derr ick design continues. There have been some
significant changes made since the preliminary concept
was introduced, mainly in the area of the structur-
al sizing to carry the design loads. After a review
of the condition of the old outboard finding the
basic engine is still serviceable, we have also
added a complete overhaul to the task list.
Fund Raising. To date, $1,600 has been raised
from 60 contributors. Several contributions of
$50, $100, and more have been received. As of
this Bow'N'Stern deadline, a revised estimate is not available. Safe to say, the cost
has escalated somewhat, therefore the fund raising plea is once again being brought
forward.
There are two ways to contribute:
The first way is to add the amount of your contribution to your monthly payment and earmark it to the
Barge Fund. That amount will be credited to Barge Fund and your initials will be included on the plaque to
be placed on the stern of the Queen of Sheba when the project is completed.
The second way is to contribute when you visit the club. Place your contribution in the barge model collec-
tion box.
You may then pick up your memento key fob as well as having your initials on the
plaque. Check out the pictures showing the location in the bar and instructions. The staff
can provide help if needed.
The derrick is the final piece of the barge restoration project which began many years
ago with the replating of the bottom. The finished project is vital because:
1. The completed barge will assist the annual spring pier work projects by lifting
large items and providing a stable work platform for the all the volunteers.
2. The barge will be useful for other projects the may come to be needed in the
future.
3. The completion of the derrick will be the capstone of the project which has seen previous monetary contri-
butions of more than $10,000 and countless hours of volunteer time. The contributions from the club treas-
ury totaled $3,000.
The barge committee wishes to gratefully acknowledge and send a great big thank you to all the previous contributors.
Won’t you join the 60 previous contributors?

Sea Scouts
As we continue to work with Patrick toward his Quartermaster rank we have taken on a new scout to work his Sailing
Merit badge. His name is Trevor. He is a scout from Troop 830.
Back in May at our Student/Parent orientation night Leslie Kohler came by and made a very generous offer to us
and also requested that we define our mission and goals. The offer was to work more closely with Youth Sailing, merge
our schedules and reduce the duplication of our equipment.
It took us about a month to develop our mission and goals and a meeting was set up for August 2nd at the Club with
Leslie Kohler, Whitney Kent, Paul Bartelt, and myself. The agreement we came to will include Sea Scouts being able
to use Youth Sailing watercraft, (420’s, J24’s and Safety boats) during our scheduled time, 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. dur-
ing the week and on weekends. Youth Sailing will have access to all of Sea Scout watercraft, (SUP’s, Kayaks, Lasers
and Watkins) during their scheduled time, 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sea Scouts will be selling off their remaining two Fly-
ing Juniors and Holder 14 and moving their three Lasers to Youth Sailing. Look for all of these changes to happen next
spring.

SYC Basement Clean-up
Due to the high lake level our club basement has been wet for some time. The Board has
decided to remove all wood from the basement to prevent rot and mold. The following vol-
unteers gave of their time on Saturday morning August 11th in what turned out to be a hot
dirty job that needed to be done.
Work started at 8:00 a.m. with Dan Gruenke and Jeff Freye assembling the new shelv-
ing in the north storage room. When that was completed Jeff and I carried all of the old
supplies stored on the wooden shelving to the dumpster while Dan cut up the old shelving
for removal. Roberta Parnitzke carried all of the SYC dining supplies from the store room
to be demolished to the new shelving.
Mike Larson teamed up with Jeff to demolish the file store
room after all of the file boxes had been moved to the new
shelves. Dan worked at removing all of the wooden doorways
and other custom wood installations that still remained from
the old bar room. Patrick Fischer, Cory Vertz, and I carried all
of the wood that was removed upstairs to the dumpster. Patrick
and I must have made 50 trips up and down those steps while
Cory made sure the dumpster was packed as tight as possible
so everything would fit in one load. Sandy Barnick came later
to help Roberta sort and organize the dining supplies in their storage boxes.
Dave Bronson came on Monday and Tuesday to finish the removal of the last storage
room and secure any electrical wiring and plumbing.

Dear SYC Members:
It is our pleasure to inform you of a world class sailing competition coming to Sheboygan this fall.
SEAS (Sailing Education Association of Sheboygan), World Sailing and Sail Sheboygan-US Sailing Center are
preparing for the 2018 Para World Sailing Championships, which will be held in Sheboygan in September 2018.
This amazing event brings sailors from around the world with many types of disabilities to Sheboygan to
compete at the highest level. Also, this championship is the turning point for these competitors and the last
event prior to January 2019, when the judges will decide whether to bring sailing back to the Paralympics in
2024.
Many people ask, “Why Sheboygan?” We answer, “Why not Sheboygan.”
Sheboygan’s location on the western shore of Lake Michigan, its friendly and welcoming community and businesses dedicated to growing Sheboygan County makes Sheboygan a perfect location from which to launch world-class sailing competitions. From the first event, the 2005 Lightning North Americans, to the 2016 Blind Match Racing World Championship and Women’s Match Racing World Championship events to the 2017 Blind Fleet Racing Championship, Sail Sheboygan and SEAS have hosted sailors from all over the world.
This is one of the most exciting events to come to the shores of Sheboygan, Wisconsin. However, bringing an
event such as this to Sheboygan is no small task. It requires us to raise funds. To date we have raised more
than $50,000 and need to raise $15,000 to reach our goal. We ask that you consider making a financial
contribution to help support this world-class sailing championship. Your participation in this event is greatly
appreciated. Sponsorship information is detailed at http://www.paraworldsailing2018.com/about/become-a-
sponsor/
Please send your check to SEAS 1837 Superior Ave., Sheboygan WI 53081. To learn more about the 2018 Para
World Sailing Championships, call 920-783-3670, email [email protected] or visit
www.paraworldsailing2018.com.
Sincerely,
Matt Wierzbach, Event Chair Lisa Hartman, Sponsorship Chair
