Vertical Drilling SystemThe Smith Services Vertical Drilling System is de-signed to provide an efficient and cost-effective means of maintaining a vertical wellbore trajectory. The system utilizes proven packed hole assembly BHA design techniques and combines it with the lat-est high performance positive displacement motor technology for optimum performance. Synthetic dia-mond enhanced inserts are also selectively used at the BHA contact points to provide effective wall sup-port, resistance to abrasive wear and reduced fric-tion. The reaming action of the synthetic diamond enhanced inserts also helps ensure a smooth, full gauge, high quality wellbore.

The Vertical Drilling System positive displacement motor utilizes a power section with a uniform elas-tomer thickness on the stator that provides more power and greater reliability than conventional downhole motors.

A proprietary Smith Services BHA prediction model-ing software program is utilized to analyze and op-timize the BHA design and drilling parameters for each specific application.

Borrox® Advanced Performance Sealed Bearing ReamerThe Borrox Advanced Performance (AP) Reamer is de-signed for modern drilling challenges, with fully customiz-able hole gauge maintenance and torque reduction char-acteristics.

The Borrox AP Reamer is available for all common hole sizes and can be configured for near bit and string place-ment in the BHA. Three different cutter assemblies are available for specific formation applications. KSX cutters utilize high-strength TCI inserts for soft to medium-hard formations. RSX cutters are milled profile rollers for torque reduction applications. DEX cutters feature diamond en-hanced inserts for high abrasion and impact resistance, ideal for use in hard formations. Cutter assemblies can be easily changed on the rig floor to tailor the Borrox AP Reamer to a broad range of wellbore conditions.

Features and BenefitsHigh flow body design for increased annular TFA and • improved hole cleaningLonger full gauge cutting section for enhanced gauge • maintenance Proprietary seal configuration for extended bearing • life at higher loads, temperatures and rotary speedsThree different reamer cutters available to tailor the • tool to specific applicationsCutter assemblies easily and safely changed on the • rig floor

ApplicationsReduce downhole torque resulting from wellbore spi-• raling and doglegsMedium to severe packed hole assembly designs typi-• cally require a Borrox AP Reamer to be placed directly above the bit to provide reaming ahead of the stabi-lization. A reamer is not an effective stabilizer and should always be followed, in this application, by full gauge stabilization Mild packed hole assemblies can be designed using • the Borrox AP Reamer as the first zone of stabiliza-tion. In extremely abrasive drilling conditions, an ad-ditional reamer should be considered

Service and SupportOptimum placement in the BHA is a critical component of any reamer application. A Smith Services representative should always be consulted on the placement of your Bor-rox AP Reamer. Proprietary software can be used to ana-lyze and predict the tendencies of a particular assembly to ensure that the drilling objectives are achieved.

The Borrox AP Reamer offers multiple cutting structure options, reliability, rig site serviceabil-ity and a reputation for maintaining hole gauge in extreme conditions. Call a Smith Services representative today to find out how the Borrox AP Reamer can add value to your drilling operation.

Diamond Enhanced Insert ReamerThe Diamond Enhanced Insert (DEI) Reamer delivers effective hole reaming across a broad range of applications. Its advanced integral body design incorpo-rates tough, state-of-the-art synthetic diamond enhanced inserts that shear the hole wall, providing a quality, full gauge wellbore. Each insert is securely brazed into the tool body, eliminating the mov-ing parts that are found in conventional reamers. The dual spiral and tapered de-sign permits more circulation area than conventional reamers and should be con-sidered when annular restriction is a con-cern.

Features and BenefitsSynthetic diamond enhanced inserts • to provide a durable cutting structure capable of maintaining full gauge hole in soft to medium-hard formations

Spiral body design to facilitate high • circulation rates and the efficient transport of cuttings past the toolTapered body profile for reaming ca-• pability both downward and upwardNo moving parts to wear or fail down-• hole

Gauge Indicator SubThe Gauge Indicator Sub generates an in-crease in torque when the drill bit wears below nominal gauge specification. This cost-effective technique allows the driller to detect drill bit gauge wear by the increas-ing torque as the wear-resistant blades make contact with the hole wall. The Gauge Indicator Sub can help reduce reaming time and maximize ROP. A short, efficient body design enables the sub to be made up be-tween the drill bit and mud motor or rotary steerable system. The Gauge Indicator Sub is available in a broad range of sizes.

Features and BenefitsExtends bit life due to improved center-• ing of the drill bit in the wellboreProvides a smoother, high quality well-• boreShort design to facilitate placement at • the bit, or between the bit and mud motor in rotary steerable systemsType 300 Hardfacing to ensure long life • in abrasive environments

Drilling On Gauge DOG® SubThe drilling on gauge DOG Sub has been specifically de-signed to deliver at-the-bit reaming performance. Its short body design and durable cutting structure enable placement between the bit and motor in directional appli-cations. The cutting structure utilizes synthetic diamond enhanced inserts designed specifically for continuous reaming. Each insert is brazed into the body, eliminating the moving parts found in conventional reamers.

Features and BenefitsSynthetic diamond enhanced inserts to provide a • durable cutting structure capable of maintaining full gauge hole in soft to medium-hard formationsNo moving parts to wear or fail•

Short body design to facilitate reaming directly at the • bit and placement between bit and the mud motor in directional applications

ApplicationsDirectional projects where maintaining hole gauge is • expected to be a problem. The DOG Sub will maintain hole size once the drill bit begins to lose its gauge, thus reducing or eliminating the need to ream back to bottom with a directional assembly.Directional wells where doglegs necessitate a ream-• ing run through the build section. The DOG Sub may provide the adequate reaming and contact behind the bit, wiping out the ledges as drilling progresses. A smoother build section can reduce hole drag and fa-cilitate drilling operations.Near-bit reaming in a packed hole assembly when • placed directly above the drill bit. Shortening the dis-tance from the bit to the first point of stabilization improves BHA and drilling performance.

Integral Blade StabilizerThe Integral Blade Stabilizer (IBS) is manufactured from high strength alloy steel as a single piece tool. The unit-ized construction features three spiraled ribs designed to minimize downhole torque, reduce damage to the hole wall and ensure maximum fluid circulation. The IBS is well suited for use in most formations from soft and sticky to hard and abrasive. It is available in both bottom hole and string designs, providing the flexibility to run it anywhere in the BHA.

When the blades wear down to an unacceptable diam-eter, the tool should be removed from the drilling assem-bly and returned to a Smith Services repair center where it can usually be redressed to full gauge.

Features and BenefitsIntegral blades and tool body, eliminating the risk of • leaving components or pieces in the holeAvailable in both “open” and “full wrap” designs, • providing optimum hole wall contact while ensuring maximum fluid bypass areaAvailable in Type 200 and Type 300 wear surfaces•

ApplicationsA packed hole assembly typically requires the place-• ment of multiple IBS stabilizers throughout the three zones of stabilization. Contact a Smith Services rep-resentative for BHA recommendations.A pendulum assembly is a recommended application • for the IBS due to its unitized design. For the most ef-fective pendulum assembly, two stabilizers should be run separated by one drill collar.Vibration and drill collar whipstock can be reduced • through the placement of stabilizers in the BHA and upper drill collar string.
