Congratulations and welcome all to the 49th Annual Northern California Area Emmy® AwardsGala. Though the virus may socially distance us, know we are together once more in this mostspecial of ways. This edition of the Gala will be a first. Our award has gone virtual in everydigital way imaginable – broadcast on You Tube, socially mediated on Facebook and Twitter, anda special room on Zoom reserved just for nominees. We will not personally hand you an awardbut you will be able to share the celebration with more family and more friends.
Truly, work awarded an Emmy® statuette by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences(NATAS) attests your outstanding achievement. Know that you are among the most giftedjournalists and media crafts people in the Chapter. As your regional Chapter president, I amdelighted to represent the talented professionals working in Northern California, Reno, Hawaii, and Guam.
Emmy® Gala Chair Julie Watts organized this evening’s outstanding event. Special thanks toChapter Award Committee Chair and Emmy® legend Wayne Freedman. for riding herd over themyriad of details from improving the Call for Entries to screening each entry into the rightcategory. The long award process culminates tonight. My special appreciation goes to PattyZubov, Joyce Mitchell and Larena Baldazo, who were instrumental in securing sponsors andmarketing the Gala. This event happened this year because so many wanted an award showrather than a press release stating the recipients.
We are truly blessed with dedicated and talented members of the Gala committee who helpedto pull off an award show in impossible times. This night is outstanding because you are out-standing professionals. Thank you for all your hours of phone calls, emails, and Zoom meetings.
Two last notes: This will be my final Gala as your president. My presidency ends with themonth. The experience has been exceptional, I have loved every minute. I will not be leaving theChapter. I remain on the board to assist your new President, Randy Forsman, find his footing. That will not take long though. He already has great ideas for the future of our Chapter.
Secondly, I dedicate this Gala tonight to our dear friend Linda Giannecchini. Linda died justthree days after last year’s Gala. For most on our board this is the first Gala without her guid-ance, comradery, and brilliance. We have so missed her in this last year. Linda watch over us.

If you didn’t submit a speech, we encourage you to post one tonight on social media along witha link to your entry using #EMMYSF2020 and #EMMYSFAtHome.
If you did submit an acceptance clip that airs tonight, we’d love for you to post a copy of thattoo along with a link to your entry and our hashtags.
THE TEAMThis night would not be possible without the hard work and sacrifice of President, Steve Shliskywho carried much of the weight by editing this labor-intensive show, along with Patty Zubov,Kevin Wing and Joyce Mitchell who helped wrangle the many moving parts.
We’d also like to thank the Emmy® Gala Committee, our Board of Governors, our presenters,Tracy Peterson of The AV Society, Photojournalist Ken Day and our Awards Chair WayneFreedman.

The San Francisco/Northern California Chapter annually honors outstanding individual, newsand program achievements in Northern California, Hawaii and Reno. The purpose of conferringthe coveted Emmy® statuette is to provide incentive for continuing outstanding individual andproduction achievements within the television industry. The Emmy® Awards program is also ameans of focusing public attention upon the multi-talented individuals who comprise thisbusiness and to honor them. There can be one award, more than one award or no award pre-sented in each category.
This was another great year with 882 entries (706 English and 176 Spanish) submitted in 64English and 41 Spanish categories from the calendar year 2019, for Emmy® award consider-ation. All entries were submitted and uploaded through Emmy® Express and then judged onlineby the following NATAS chapters: Chicago/Midwest; Heartland (Denver); Mid-Atlantic (Philadel-phia); Pacific Southwest (San Diego); Sun Coast (Miami) and Upper Midwest (Minneapolis/SaintPaul). At least seven peers viewed and scored each entry. English and Spanish entries arejudged separately. The online programs were scored for content, creativity, and execution (1 to10 points), for a possible total of 30 points. Craft categories are judged on creativity and execu-tion only, for a possible 20 points. After scoring all the entries in the category, the judge certi-fied his or her scores and submitted the ballot directly to our accountant for processing.
A tabulated sheet representing each category, with separate entries for English and Spanish -but not identified - was presented to the Awards Committee. The committee determined a cut-off score in each category and entries above that score were considered nominees. The commit-tee then selected the Emmy® recipients by highest scores. The Awards Committee membersmade these selections without knowing which entries or categories were being considered. Thenominations were announced May 6, 2020 on the chapter’s website. 178 English and 59 Span-ish entries were nominated with 822 certificates being handed out to 452 individuals. Tonight,we will see the top scores of Emmy® award excellence.

The Governors’ AwardElliott TroshinskyPresident and General Manager, KCRA 3 / KQCA My58
Sacramento’s Elliott Troshinsky is being recognized this year with the highest award presentedby a local chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS), the presti-gious Governors’ Award. Troshinsky is known as a quiet giant, a TV veteran who sits at the helmof a Sacramento duopoly. Troshinsky was hired in 2000 by Hearst-Argyle as president andgeneral manager of NBC Affiliate KCRA 3 and KQCA My58. He is behind the scenes but runs atight ship dedicated to news excellence and serving the community.
“We’ve noticed the contributions that both Channel 3 and My58 have made to the communityunder Elliott’s leadership throughout the years, especially during crisis situations includingnatural disasters,” said SF/NorCal NATAS President Steve Shlisky. “We see that the stationsteps-up to raise awareness, donating valuable airtime to program specials that help viewers inthe Sacramento market. A recent program educating the public about the COVID-19 pandemic isjust one of many examples. We know many of those programs occur because of Troshinsky’sleadership and commitment to community service.”
Troshinsky is a television veteran who’s been in the industry nearly 50 years. Prior to being hiredat KCRA and KQCA, he was general manager of Sacramento’s KMAX, now part of a SacramentoCBS duopoly. Troshinsky served as GM of KMAX for more than a decade.
Prior to working in Sacramento, he was the GM at WCIS in Miami, worked in sales at WTAF-TV inPhiladelphia and WDAF-TV in Kansas City, MO where he was named general sales manager. And before that, like so many TV people, he got his broadcasting start in radio.
During this COVID-19 pandemic, KCRA opened its airwaves to the community, educating viewersabout safety, prevention, and the dynamics of the virus. When fires raged through California’swine country, KCRA collaborated with the Red Cross and dedicated airwaves to raise nearly one-million-dollars for fire victims.
From fires in California to flooding in Texas to the Opioid Crisis, KCRA responds underTroshinsky’s leadership to serve the community. In the midst of chaos and protests in Sacra-mento in recent years, KCRA quickly answered the community needs, asking tough questions ofSacramento’s police chief and mayor in a town hall called, The Death of Stephon Clark: A Callfor Change.

“The Board of Governors unanimously voted for Troshinsky to receive this high honor becauseof his outstanding credentials and great track record of community leadership in Sacramento,”said Shlisky. “His television background is extensive and versatile. We have voted him worthy ofthis prestigious recognition.”
For this award, an Emmy® Statuette is given. This award can be given to an individual, companyor organization for outstanding achievement in the arts, sciences or management of television.Congratulations Elliott Troshinsky.
