BAM Committee

A BAM Committee was formed in March 03 with the task of BAM firm selection by the November 03.

The members of the Committee are: Gianfranco Catitti, Ubaldo Denni, Jean Dupraz, Alberto Franceschi, Kaoru Hoshino, Gianni Rosa, Mario Spinetti, Lucia Votano, and SB. H. Pessard and D. Frekers gave their availability for consulting about BMS and Lead if needed.

The selection procedure is based on a Pre-selection phase, closed in May 03, followed by an official INFN tender where only pre-selected firms are invited.

3

Firm Pre-selection

3 meetings have been done at LNF for Pre-selection: April 7th , April 17th , Mai 7th-8th

The goals were:- to have a more detailed technical and economic evaluation of proposed designs,- a reduction of ~ a factor 2 on the number of firms to invite to the tender,- to define the evaluation criteria,- to have a first comparative scoring of the submitted projects,- to prepare all the documentation (technical and administrative) for the tender

Pre - Selection Criteria

100 points to be scored by

- firm evaluation (15),

- project: technical solution (40),

- project: cost (30),

- project: running costs (5),

- reliability (10).

The Committee decided to score the proposal according to the following rules:

Template for Evaluation

The Committee has defined the following template of items to be used for the evaluation of the pre-projects submitted by the firms

• Piling: description of adopted method, technical details, material and components, speed and acceleration, piling cycle timing.

• Pile wrapping and manipulation: description of adopted method, technical details, material and components.

• ECC and Brick Packaging: description of adopted method, technical details, material and components, welding procedure, vacuum procedure, helium insertion.

• Quality Control systems: description of adopted method, technical details, documentation on instrumentation to be used and expected performance.

• Alternative solutions: compatibility with baseline option, expected performance (packaging lifetime, brick dimensions, etc etc).

7

Alternative layout (see other talk)

Some of the firms attending the pre-selection phase have submitted“alternative brick layouts” in order to:

- simplify laminated film positioning, welding and folding

- reduce and/or eliminate risks due to vacuum packaging

All proposed solutions are under evaluation and technical studies aregoing on both in our labs and in firm sites.

A strategy to manage the possibility to change brick layout has beendefined by the BAM Commitee and will be presented in a dedicated talk.

Tender documentation

The Committee has also defined the document that will be sent during first week of June to the pre-selected firms as invitation to the INFN tender.

The document will include:

• Revised BAM specs document,

• Project Milestones,

• Technical Offer,

• Cost breakdown,

• Material sent to firms,

• Payment Conditions

10

BAM Project Milestones

1 - Technical design with description of commercial and custom components,

2 - Acceptance of Piling section,

3 - Acceptance of ECC packaging section,

4 - Acceptance of Brick packaging section (nominal dimension),

5 - Acceptance of all Quality Check operations at nominal speed rate,

6 - Acceptance of BAM at firm site,

7 - Acceptance of BAM at LNGS site,

8 - Final acceptance (3 months of mass production).

11

Technical Offer

The Technical offer shall be divided in the following main 5 sections:

• Component feeding (1.1.1 in BAM specs document)• Piling (1.1.2, 1.1.3)• ECC packaging (1.1.4)• Brick assembly (1.1.5, 1.1.6, 1.1.7)• Control systems including handling of rejected bricks

For each section it will be requested:

• detailed description in words,• technical drawing as detailed as possible,• manpower demanded (number of shifts, number, frequency and kind of professional).

Material for firms

Each of the 4 pre-selected firms will be supplied with the followingmaterial from the OPERA Collaboration:

1000 lead sheets in 1 transportation box for lead (end of May)

1000 emulsion sheets in final packaging (not refreshed end of May,refreshed end of June at most)

10 samples of CS in final packaging shape (end of June at most)

The firms will be also informed about the present laminated film we areusing at CERN (Sidec 122TLS95).

They will be also supplied of prototype samples of CSS and skates

BAM site preparation

During last March – April we had two meetings with LNSG technical engineering team (R. Adinolfi, D. Franciotti, A. Fulgenzi, P. Martella, R. Tartaglia) to continue the definition of the BAM site infrastructure The goal is to define all the administrative and technical actions to guarantee the release of the site in final shape by October 2004.It was submitted to the LNGS Colleagues all documentation regarding:

- the power consumption,- the possible BAM layout,- the logistic for manipulation of brick components and BMS drums,- the safety infrastructures,- the dark room and the clean room,- the air conditioning system

Presently the documentation for the construction of all the insulation structure and crane is under way in INFN administration. Delivery is expected before august 03.

BAM project strategy (1)

Human resources at CERN: BAM CERN based activity is funded by INFN for 2003 (?).After negotiations with CERN management last year we defined the technical support in terms of G. Decreuse (50%) + C. Schillinger (100%) and J. Dupraz.Contracts of technicians last up to September 03. Decision must be taken now on extension.

Human resources at LNF: LNF BAM group has started up under A. Franceschi CoordinationAfter first training session of LNF technicians at CERN done in Nov 02, they have started the setting up of a local laboratory, performing first test measurements (see U. Denni talk) and actively participated both in pre-selection phase and administrative organization of tender.New engineer contract expected in June 03

15

BAM project strategy (2)

From now to BAM contract:

Laboratory activitiestest measurements will be performed on real piles (and not anymore on iron or Al blocks) concerning:• wrapping of the pile with PE and adhesive tapes,• alternative welding shapes, folding, and gluing,• alternative brick layouts with mechanical packaging solutions• leakage rate measurements (destructive and not destructive mode)• production of test beam bricks as close as possible to final ones

Tender activitywe have to follow the preparation of the offers having several contacts and visits to the firms. There will be visits with firms to LNGS by-pass site to define details of BAM vs site infrastructures.LNF colleagues will take care about all the administrative items to prepare for the signature of the contract.

Page 16: 1 BAM status report S.Buontempo on behalf of BAM Committee BAM Committee Firm Pre-selection Tender Documentation BAM site preparation Project strategy

16

BAM project strategy (3)

From BAM contract to BAM Acceptance in firm site:

Laboratory activitiestest measurements will be performed on validation of proposed solutions of different BAM sections, especially in terms of compatibility with emulsion sheets. This will often require accelerated aging tests.Production of test beam bricks as close as possible to final ones.

Other activityControl the BAM design and construction in selected firm site.Control that the BAM site in LNGS will be prepared according to the requests and schedule Follow the preparation of all the administrative documents to perform the payments according to the fulfillment of different milestones.
