The homework is meant to give you an opportunity to practice your new knowledge… not to sabotage your grade!

Be sure to attempt your homework a few days before it’s due… if you have technical difficulties, email me and we can try to work around it!

Conjugating regular verbs

-o -amos

-as -áis

-a -an

-o -emos

-es -éis

-e -en

-o -imos

-es -ís

-e -en

-AR -ER -IR

We know how to conjugate ALL regular verbs!!!! All infinitives in Spanish will end in –AR, -ER, or –IR So, as long as the conjugation is regular, you can

conjugate ANY REGULAR VERB!! To broaden your vocabulary (and to double check

the conjugation), visit www.wordreference.com

Otros verbos

llegar = to arrive participar = to participate deber + (infinitive) = to should (do

something)

The first two are conjugated like regular –AR verbs

The last verb phrase is conjugated like a regular –ER verb

deber + (infinitive)

Use “deber” + the infinitive of another verb to express what someone should or ought to do› Debo hacer la tarea = I should do the homework› Debes trabajar = You should work› Ella debe leer = She should read› Debemos bailar = We should dance› Ustedes deben participar = Y’all should

participate deber conjugates like a regular –ER verb

deber + (infinitive)1. Who should do the thing?

› Conjugate the verb in the form of the person that should do the thing!

YOU should study Tú debes estudiar

I should drink coffee. Yo debo beber café.

We should speak Spanish Nosotros debemos hablar española

would ask to find out that information. When you’re done, find a partner and

interview them! Take notes, be prepared to share with the

class!

Verbs with Irregularities in the “yo” form

Hacer Saber Ver

Everything else is normal (as in, conjugated like regular –ER verbs)

Only the first person singular (yo form) is weird!

These are SUPER COMMON verbs that you will use a lot

hacer = to do, to make

hago hacemos

haces hacéis

hace hacen

saber = to know (facts)

sé sabemos

sabes sabéis

sabe saben

ver = to see

So… what about estar?

=estoy estamos

estás estáis

está están

I am we are

you are you all are

he/she/Usted is they/Ustedes are

Estar ends in –AR, but unfortunately it is not regular. It is irregular.

The only weird form is the “yo” form. The “tú” “él/ella/Ud.” and “ellos/ellas/Ustedes

form get accent marks

But wait…

Isn’t there another way to say “is”?› Like when describing personality?

Homer Simpson es cómico. › When telling someone where you’re from?

¿De donde eres? Soy de Chicago.› Telling time?

Son las dos menos diez. Es la una.› Talking about profession?

Él es estudiante. Nosotros somos estudiantes.

What?! Two verbs that mean “to be”?

Yup, that’s right. To say “to be” are two different verbs in Spanish.

They are ser and estar.

Let’s see how to conjugate them before we learn when to use them…

estar = to be

estoy estamos

estás estáis

está están

ser = to be

soy somos

eres sois

es son

* every form of ser is irregular

ser vs estar?

All you need to know is this little rhyme:

If you plan to continue to study Spanish, I’ve included more detailed rules for ser vs. estar on your worksheet.

THAT WORKSHEET INCLUDES VERB CONSTRUCTIONS YOU ARE UNFAMILLIAR WITH. DO NOT WORRY. I WILL NOT TEST YOU ON THEM.

How you feel and where you are, always use the verb estar
