• Offer side sympathy arrangements that coordinate with the Casket Spray or Urn design

• Flowers aren’t just for the funeral home and church services. Designs should also be offeredthat can be transported to the home, a reception or another memorial site.

• Combine fresh flowers with potted plants to offer a take home memento for the family

sympathy Etiquette• Send floral baskets or living plants when the sender has a closer relationship to the

bereaved than to the deceased.

• Sympathy baskets are appropriate when sent by family, or those who had a deeper or formalrelationship with the deceased.

• Floral wreaths, crosses, and sprays are appropriate when sent by anyone other than thosenot acquainted with the deceased.

• Young children, or grandchildren of the deceased, honor them with lid arrangements

• Casket covers are reserved for family members.

• It’s appropriate to send brightly-colored flowers for a funeral because it can reflect on theenergetic personality of the deceased.

• Tributes are generally chosen by good friends or family members. Also appropriate whengiven by anyone in the case of cremation.

• In the case of cremation and there’s a memorial service, send an all–occasion floral basket.

• It is acceptable to send flowers in a glass vase to a funeral home.

• Sending flowers as a group is a good idea because it can be that much more special.

• Floral honors are always appreciated, no matter when they are received.

10 tips for working with funeral directors1. Use only your freshest flowers- Arrangements must stand in room temperature for

as long as 48 hours until service is over.

2. Don’t be a drip- Designs created in floral foam should be set upright for a few hours so excesswater can be eliminated before going to the funeral home.

3. Create balanced designs- Make certain that all your floral designs, including easels arestable and will sit and stand securely.

4. Eliminate exposed sharp points- Make sure that sharp picks or wire ends are not exposed.

5. Learn hearse dimensions- Make sure to not create casket sprays that are too highor mounded.

6. Consider size- Excessively large floral pieces are often difficult to display whereassmaller pieces can be displayed and/or taken home.

7. Notify funeral directors of unusual designs- Inform them ahead of time of sympathy piecesthat might need special care or other accommodations.

8. Deliver early- Make sure to deliver flowers to funeral homes or service sites at leasttwo hours before the families are scheduled to be there.

9. Make the call- If you need to make a late-evening delivery the night before a service, call ahead.

10. Be courteous- Funeral directors will always appreciate your willingness to help thembetter serve their clients.
