Introduction

MRF Tyres [ Madras Rubber Factory]

Established in the year 1946.

entrepreneur, K. M. Mammen Mappillai.

opened a small toy balloon manufacturing unit, at Thiruvottiyur- Chennai.

1952, The first machine (a rubber mill) was installed at the factory and MRF

ventured into manufacture of tread rubber.

Strength

The only supplier of retreaded rubber and a chain of its own retread

plants across India by the name of MRF PRETREADS.

Very high quality of Induction and training program.

The organization always has an excellent control on quality. ISO

Certification 9001.

Environmental Certification with ISO 14001.

Policies, of the organization are satisfactory and transparent.

The safety and security policies are well defined and strictly followed.Won J D Power Award for better quality of product [ 2008-2009].

Weakness

The trade union is very strong and hence strikes are very frequent. Year 2009

witnessed lock out in Thiruvottiyur and Ponda plants twice.

They are very authoritative with the dealers and hence the exclusive dealers are

shifting towards being multi-brand dealers resulting in counter share.

MRF does not believe in giving any discounts to the dealers which in turn is not

a motivating factor to the dealers.

Very centralized decision making authority.

MRF does not have a plant in the East.

MRF does not promote a participative work culture.

Opportunity

With the number of new high end variants of vehicles coming into India

the opportunity for OEM business is very high exclusively in the twowheeler range as competition is only from CEAT and Dunlop Tyres.

Threats

Chinese, Korean and Taiwanese tyre availability in India.

Birla Tyres venturing into Two wheeler Segment.

Opening of Modi Tyres Limited after gap of 11 years.

Findings

MRF Ltd. is the No.1 tyre manufacturer in the country and the 13 th largest

in the world.

Policies, of the organization are satisfactory and transparent.

The technology used is always updated.

Training and development programs are conducted at timely intervals.

Well defined and practiced safety and security policy.

Suggestions

Enterprise mobility can be implemented.

More emphasis on employee relations to be given so that the strikes and

trade unions are at bay.

Dealer graveness and feedback to be addressed.Empowerment of its Sales managers at Zonal level for taking decisions.

Huge opportunity for MRF to set up a plant in the East viz. West Bengal

as it would be easy to cater to the north and east India. Presently Birla has

its plant in UP, Modi in UP, JK in Rajasthan.
