Digital Literacy is Essential in Modern Work Place As we see technology continue to advance, the need for digital literacy in the workforce becomes more important. Today more and more employers require prospective employees to demonstrate basic computer skills, such as word processing, spreadsheets, and effective website research, just to get in the door. This shift in skill sets is not just about adding digital components to traditional jobs, it is also about the creation of entirely new jobs which offer new opportunities for thousands of workers. It is estimated that almost eight in ten middle-skill jobs, which are defined as those that require less than a college degree but more than a high school degree, now require basic digital literacy skills. These jobs represent 39% of the overall U.S. job market and on average pay 18% more than those that don’t require digital fluency. Sadly job seekers who lack sufficient digital skills could get left behind. However, it’s not always easy to figure out which digital skills you may specifically need or may not need at all. Perhaps it is easiest to think of digital literacy as a language; the more digital skills you have, the better you can speak the “digital language”. There are many nonprofit groups trying to address the problem of digital literacy in the adult population. One of these groups is www.digitalliteracy.gov, a site overseen by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, under the U.S. Department of Commerce. The site offers links to many resources, with everything from basic computer skills to using software and applications. On a local level many libraries, schools and community colleges offer (965-2294) digital literacy classes. The digital skills gap should not be something to fear. Rather, it is an opportunity for people of all ages – not just young people – to jump into a new sector or to get a better job at their current company. The good news is that there are ample resources for those who want to learn digital skills. At least a few days before you dig on your property, you must call 811 to get underground u lity lines marked. This helps prevent unintended consequences such as injuries, damage to your property, u lity service outages to the neighborhood, and poten al fi nes and repair costs.

Some homeowners, however, are confused about when they need to call 811. So we’re clearing up some common misconcep ons here:

Wrong! Every digging job requires a call — even “small” projects like plan ng trees and shrubs. Some u lity lines are buried just a few inches underground.

You s ll need to call. Erosion and root system growth can alter the depth or loca on of buried lines, or your u lity companies may (767-7117) have completed work on their lines since the last me you dug.

Don’t assume. Check with the company before digging begins to make sure a call to 811 has been placed. TCT thanks you for helping prevent damage to our infrastructure.

Voices of the Wind People, an outdoor drama, will be performed at the Old Riverbed Amphitheater in Council Grove. The pageant, written by Ron Parks, provides

an historically accurate snapshot of what it was like when the Native American and Euro-American cultures collided in Council Grove on the Santa Fe Trail. The performance will take you back in time to the mid 1850’s and give you a front row seat to hear both sides of the story between Chief Allegawaho, the Kanza (Kaw) Chief, and Seth Hays, Council Grove’s fi rst Euro-American resident. This drama was fi rst produced 26 years ago, and is performed every two years.

The production of Voices of the Wind People is accomplished completely by volunteer staff and performers. Approximately 30 members of the Kaw Nation will travel to Council Grove to portray their ancestors in the pageant. They will enact

village scenes and perform dramatic roles and traditional dances. The story is told in alternating perspectives – the side of the Kaw and the side of the townspeople of Council Grove. The Kaw story is narrated by Chief Allegawaho, voiced by a member of the Kaw Nation. The Council Grove side of the story is narrated by Seth Hays, as voiced by Council Grove resident Mark Brooks.

Voices is a multi-media presentation depicting a series of live action scenes of both Council Grove citizens and Kaw Indians. The production incorporates historic photos, images of the prairie landscape, and video images with the live-action of a pack train, wagon train, stagecoach, riders on horseback, tepees and the campfi re of a Kanza village.

The 2018 performances will be Friday, Sept. 14 and Saturday, Sept. 15 beginning at 8pm both nights.

Tickets for Voices of the Wind People can be purchased online by going to the website www.voicesofthewindpeople.com. Tickets will also be sold the evening of each performance. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children K-12. For further information, call 620.767.5413, visit www.voicesofthewindpeople.com, email [email protected] or search for Voices of the Wind People Pageant on Facebook.
