DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH CARE ADMINISTRATION 0910
CHAiRS MESSAGEThe end of an academic year is a time to re ect back on the successes and challenges of the past year.
Despite a diffi cult economic environment, the past year was good to Trinitys Health Care
Administration program. Our enrollments were healthy, program graduates found jobs, and we
continue to have strong support from the fi eld in providing residency opportunities. Through the
efforts of Trinitys Campaign for Health Care Administration, we have been able to generate a number
of new scholarship and fellowship opportunities for our students. Our annual Leaders in Health
Management Symposium, featuring American Hospital Association President
Rich Umbdenstock, was our most successful to date.
This fall, we will move into our self-study year for our periodic reaccreditation by the Commission
on Accreditation for Healthcare Management Education (CAHME). In preparation for that visit,
we have reviewed and reaffi rmed our mission and vision:
MiSSioN The Programs mission is to enhance the practice of health care administration by preparing
individuals for management positions and leadership roles in the health care fi eld.
viSioN We will be the premier program for integrating excellent academic preparation with outstanding
applied and experiential learning.
We have also articulated our core values:
Our educational offerings will be relevant. Our efforts will be student-centered. Professionalism will guide our actions. Research and scholarship will be core responsibilities of our faculty. Service to the community is an obligation of health care professionals.
These values are the driving forces behind all of our efforts.
It is a privilege to be part of a program as dynamic as Trinity Universitys Health Care Administration.
Thanks to our talented and committed faculty and staff, our supportive alumni, energetic and
engaged students, and the many friends in the professional community who have contributed
to another successful year.
Sincerely,
Mary E. Ste , Ph.D.
Chair, Health Care Administration

Last fall, Trinity University successfully completed Dream. Inspire. Achieve. The Campaign for Trinity University, an ambitious capital campaign that surpassed its stated goal of $200 million with much to spare. But the Health Care Administration part of that campaign, not launched until May 2007, continues on.
The Campaign for Health Care Administration is our effort to ensure the long-term viability of our program. It is an outgrowth of our strategic planning process and a means of continuing our programs excellence in the years to come. The campaign will allow us to pursue our vision of being the premier health administration program that is nationally recognized for its ability to integrate on-campus learning with the field of practice.
We have had great success to date! As of the end of May 2010, we have generated a total of $5,137,000! Some $1.7 million comes to us as gifts or pledges for general program support. The remaining $3.4 million will go towards endowing the programs Center for Leadership Development in Health Management.
While we are deeply appreciative of the financial support, the campaign has had other benefits as well. It has allowed us to connect with many of our alumni throughout the country, and the warm and enthusiastic reception we have received is indicative of the true foundation of our futurethe alumni. The strength of this program rests on their shoulders. They are the reason this program will continue to grow and be a premier leader in graduate education for years to come.

ColliER AWARDAt the February 2009 meeting of the Texas Hospital Association (THA), Don Beeler, FACHE, 73, received the Earl M. Collier Award for Distinguished Hospital Administration. This is the highest honor the association bestows, and its namesake is considered the dean of hospital administration in Texas.
Beeler recently retired after 38 years of service with CHRISTUS Health and its predecessor organizations. His retirement ended a highly successful term as regional president and CEO of CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System in San Antonio. Under his tenure, the Santa Rosa system ourished, adding several new specialty programs, constructing one new hospital and acquiring another, and attaining ownership positions in several outpatient facilities.
Throughout his career, Beeler has been active with THA and HOSPAC, THAs political action committee. In 2009, he also received the American Hospital Associations Grassroots Champion Award for his political advocacy efforts.
For the past four years, Beeler has served as chair of the programs Advisory Council. In that role, he has been a strong advocate for the program and its continual development.
AluMNi HoNoRS
Every year, the HCAD Alumni Association honors an alumnus who has made signifi cant contributions to the fi eld of health care management. The 2009 recipient of the Dean Duce Award was Philip M. Wentworth, FACHE, 67, 76. Mr. Wentworth recently retired from Texas Health Resources after a long and successful career.
Wentworths career began with the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation. After several years in the New York area, Trinity classmate Doug Hawthorne, FACHE, 69, 72, encouraged him to return to Texas and join Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas. After a series of increasingly responsible positions, he was named CEO of Presbyterian Hospital in Denton, a position he held for many years.
Mr. Wentworths career is a model for any student. Having made numerous contributions to the profession of health care administration, he has also taken the time to serve his local community. He was named 2002 Citizen of the Year by the Plano Chamber of Commerce and currently serves on the programs Advisory Council.
The Duce Award is named for the late Dr. Leonard A. Duce, a former professor in the program and the fi rst dean of the Graduate School at Trinity University.

DEPARtMENtAl DiStiNGuiSHED SERviCE AWARDThe Trinity program is aided by many individualsalumni, preceptors, and members of the professional communitywho generously give of their time and expertise. As a way to recognize exceptional service to the program, we inaugurated a Distinguished Service Award.
The fi rst recipient of this award is William E. Young Jr., FACHE, 69. Young was the programs fi rst executive-in-residence. In that role, he co-taught and helped develop our Seminar in Professional Development, mentored students, and provided advice and counsel to our faculty. Over the years, Young has also been an outstanding preceptor to many HCAD students and was instrumental in helping us launch our programs capital campaign.
Mr. Young, now retired, has had a long and distinguished career which began with a residency at U.T.M.B. Galveston and involved several positions in hospital management and consulting. More recently, he was president and CEO of Warm Springs Rehabilitation System and executive vice president and COO at Nix Health Care System here in San Antonio.
We are enormously grateful for his contributions to the program at Trinity.
