  • Although the logo may resemble a school badge, 'Student Concert Hall' does welcome kindergarten to university entries!

    NOVEMBER 2020 | FINE MUSIC | FOREWORD 前言

    The RTHK Chamber Soloists has three string players, a clarinettist, and a pianist. They represent three families of instruments (bowed-strings, woodwind, and keyboard) which together can create a variety of tone colours and textures. They can produce any number of possible combinations such as a string duo, a piano trio, a clarinet quartet, and so on. However, hardly any works have been written specifically for this kind of quintet. For this reason, at The RTHK Chamber Soloists’ Inaugural Concert in 2018, Radio 4 commissioned three Hong Kong composers to each write a piece for the group. Those world premieres turned out to be highly effective and appealing.

    Building on the success, we applied to CASH for their support so that there could be more commissioned works for this specific combination. The application was successful. In Fresh Airs – Fine Music on Broadcast Drive IV, we can hear three CASH-funded works by Angel Lam, Austin Yip, and Edward Lun. When we first approached the composers, since two of them are living abroad, the idea of linking the new works with a single theme ― Hong Kong ― was much welcomed. These works relate to places in Hong Kong, and also depict the composers’ feeling for such places. Hence, the title Hong Kong Impressions has been adopted.

    The fourth work in the programme goes back to the Inaugural Concert mentioned above. Dance of Youth was a delightful encore. After the concert, Galison Lau went on to transcribe three more famous folk tunes to complete his Chinese Song Book. This collection brings to many of us fond memory of music lessons from the old school days ― another Hong Kong Impression! Tune in on 14 November at 8pm to listen to these four world premieres. You can also watch the show on RTHK TV31 on 8 November at 11pm.

    From this month, Saturday afternoons from 2 to 5pm will be filled with excitement on Radio 4. Charles Chik teams up co-host Shing Chun-hay, and a group of diehard music maniacs to present to you Musicians’ Terrace (in Cantonese). This three-hour live programme is full of interactive, informative, imaginative, and illustrative elements to let you enjoy a wealth of musical works, while getting to know the creative power behind. We look forward to your on-air company, which may include, and not limited to answering questions or joining a poll.

    Finally, a call to all students who would like to share their artistry on Radio 4. We have a community-involved programme that needs your recordings for broadcast. We welcome works of all levels, pieces of any duration up to 35 minutes, performances in solos or in groups, and clips old and new. The most important thing is to let your talent take flight to reach out to music lovers out there through Radio 4’s airwaves and website.     我們的駐台組合有三位弦樂演奏家、一位單簧管演奏家及一位鋼

    琴家。他們來自三個樂器家族 ─ 弓弦、木管及鍵盤,能製造出不

    同的音色和織體,亦可帶來無數樂器組合,例如弦樂二重奏、鋼琴

    三重奏、單簧管四重奏等。然而,或許從未有人專為這五件樂器創

    作,所以我們特別在 2018 年香港電台室樂演奏家的成立音樂會中,

    邀請三位本地作曲家為這組合譜新曲。結果,作品不單效果鮮明,

    更獲得一致好評。

    在音樂會後,我們接觸了香港作曲家及作詞家協會,希望得到該會

    的支持,繼續為這個組合帶來新作。最終申請獲批,大家可於我們

    在乎你音樂會 IV中,欣賞三首由協會贊助,分別由林安淇、葉浩堃

    和倫偉傑譜曲的作品。起初我們接觸委約作曲家時,由於其中兩位

    身處外地,以「香港」為共用創作主題的建議,頗具瞄頭。結果,作

    品內容跟香港的地方有關,更反映出作曲家對這些地方的個人感

    覺。這場音樂會最終亦以香港印象為題。

    至於第四首委約新作,就要追溯到先前提過的那場成立音樂會了。

    當晚的加奏是熱情的《青春舞曲》。作曲家劉詠浲後來加上另外三

    個深入民心的調子,組成這套《中國民歌集》,相信必能勾起大家

    童年時上音樂堂的回憶,這也是另一個「香港印象」!11月 14日晚

    上 8 時,你可以收聽這些樂曲的首演,亦歡迎於 11月 8日晚上11

    時在港台電視 31觀賞是次演出。

    從本月起,第四台逢星期六下午 2 至 5 時將有新節目。戚家榮會夥

    拍成俊曦,加上幾位音樂發燒友送上樂事逸台。這個三小時的直播

    節目結合互動及音樂知識,亦發揮主持人的幻想力和導賞能力,讓

    你可以在收聽名曲的同時,更了解背後的無窮創意。誠意邀請你在

    空中作伴。你亦可以成為節目中問答及投票環節的參加者哩 !

    最後,誠邀同學以第四台作為藝術分享的媒體。這個讓社區參與的

    節目,會播放大家提交的演出錄音。作品的深淺度不限,長度不拘,

    上限為三十五分鐘,可以是一人或多人演出,新近以至舊錄音均無

    任歡迎。最重要是讓你的才華能透過第四台的大氣廣播和網站,接

  • In his short l ife of 36 years, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) composed some 20 full-length operas. Die Entführung aus dem Serail (The Abduction from the Seraglio) was completed when he was 26 years old. This was his first major composition for the theatre written in the style of the German singspiel, a popular form of musical entertainment featuring spoken dialogue alternating with song. The work was first performed in the Burg Theatre of Vienna in July 1782. The score was dedicated to the singer Constanze Weber, whom Mozart married a year after its successful premiere.

    The plot of this opera by Jules Massenet (1842-1912) is derived from characters that appear in the New Testament but contains very little substance of a biblical nature. The subject involves both violent and passionate emotions and Massenet's music also presents a delicate sensuality and voluptuous charm so typical of the composer's expressive style.

    The story, a fictitious invention by the influential novelist Gustave Flaubert, focuses on the love between John the Baptist and Salomé, the seductive daughter of Hérodiade who, under suspicious circumstances, married Hérod, brother of her deceased husband. Hérod is himself fascinated by Salomé's beauty and openly desires her. Hérodiade manipulates this situation to destroy John, who publicly attacks her depravity.

    The title role is sung by mezzo-soprano Dolora Zajick, Salomé by soprano Renée Fleming, John the Baptist by tenor Plácido Domingo, and Hérod by baritone Juan Pons. The San Francisco Opera Chorus and Orchestra are conducted by Valery Gergiev.

    In November, Sunday Opera programmes on Radio 4 consist of a light-hearted singspiel about an attempt to escape from a harem, a highly romanticised version of a biblical story, a musical farce concerning a foreign prince's amorous adventure in Naples, an idyllic love story between an innocent farm girl and her handsome employer, and a strange legal case involving an ageless mysterious woman.

    The plot is set in Turkey, a favourite location for Baroque and Classical comic operas on account of its then-fashionable exotic appeal. Belmonte tries to rescue his beloved Konstanze who has been captured by the Turks and is kept in the harem of the Pasha's palace. His plan encounters many obstacles while Konstanze struggles desperately to resist the Pasha's lustful advances. With the help of his servant Pedrillo, Belmonte finally manages to escape with Konstanze and her maid Blonde, but they are soon recaptured. The Pasha, moved by the lovers' steadfast faithfulness to each other, shows his magnanimity by restoring their freedom.

    The two pairs of lovers, Belmonte-Konstanze and Pedrillo-Blonde, are sung by tenors Peter Schreier and Harald Neukirsch and sopranos Arleen Auger and Reri Grist. The Pasha is portrayed by bass Kurt Moll. The Staatskapelle Dresden and the Leipzig Radio Chorus participate under the baton of Karl Böhm.

  • Acclaimed for the tremendous success of his first opera Cavalleria Rusticana, a youthful work of 1890 that caused one of the greatest sensations in opera history, Pietro Mascagni (1863-1945) was credited with almost single-handedly ushering in the verismo (realism) movement in Italian operatic music. The immense popularity of that early masterpiece prompted many imitations. To avoid being accused of repeating the same formula in his subsequent works, Mascagni consciously attempted to change his style and approach almost every time he composed a new opera.

    L'amico Fritz (Our Friend Fritz), Mascagni's second opera, produced in 1892, was entirely different from his first. A gentle pastoral love story with a happy ending and somewhat sentimental appeal, the work contains an abundance of sweet, lyrical melodies. The plot centres around a bet made betweenLuciano Pavarotti, tenor

    Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) was an impressive early achiever. He was a competent player of several instruments and a talented singer as a child. By the time he entered the Liceo Musicale in Bologna at the age of 14, he had already been working as a singer and accompanist in local theatres for more than a year.

    Rossini began to compose seriously at age 15, and by 18, in November 1810, he had his first opera professionally performed in Venice. From then on, Rossini went from success to success as opera after opera spread his fame throughout Europe. He created fresh, lively, and melodious music at great speed and was known to have completed complex full-length operas in less than a fortnight. Between 1810 and 1829, he produced 39 operas. Then, at the age of 37, he suddenly stopped composing for the stage and spent the rest of his days enjoying himself. He lived in Paris and Bologna, had a mistress, entertained his friends lavishly, and died at the venerable age of 76, a rare example of a wealthy musician who made his fortune entirely on his operatic compositions.

    Commissioned by the Theatre La Scala of Milan, Il turco in Italia (The Turk In Italy) was first performed in August 1814 under the description of dramma buffa (comic play). Set to a text by Felice Romani, the opera takes the unusual form of a play within a play in which a poet tries to concoct a comedy out of the real people and situations in his current experience, involving a Turkish prince, a Neopolitan couple, a gypsy woman and various other characters. After complicated misunderstandings and confusion, the comedy ends in a happy mood of sympathy, forgiveness, reconciliation, and reunion.

    Our recording features one of the most accomplished virtuouso florid singers of the world today, mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli, leading a sterling cast comprising comic basses Michele Pertusi and Alessandro Corbelli, tenor Ramón Vargas, baritone Roberto de Candia, and mezzo-soprano Laura Polverelli. The Chorus and Orchestra of Teatro La Scala di Milano perform under conductor Riccardo Chailly.

    Each of the young lovers has a couple of exquisite arias and together they share the wonderful Cherry Duet, which is on this occasion superbly sung by tenor Luciano Pavarotti and soprano Mirella Freni. They are supported by the Chorus and Orchestra of the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden, London. Gianandrea Gavazenni is the conductor.

    land-owner Fritz, a confirmed bachelor, and his friend Rabbi David who predicts that the rich young fellow cannot escape marriage. Fritz soon realises that he will lose the bet when he meets Suzel, his tenant-farmer's beautiful daughter.

    Lo King-man

    The libretto, written by the composer himself based on a play by Karel Čapek, reveals the strange history of the beautiful opera star Emilia Marty, who possesses a recipe for an elixir of eternal life that has already enabled her to live for over three hundred years and is still looking young. She becomes tired of her interminable existence and longs for rest. At the end of the opera, while her secret formula burns in the fireplace, the prima donna crumples into an old hag and dies before the eyes of the audience.

    First edition in 1922 of Věc Makropulos, the play written by Karel Čapek.

    A c k n o w l e d g e d a s t h e greatest Czech composer of the 20th century, Leoš J a n â č e k ( 1 8 5 4 - 1 9 2 8 ) c re a t e d t h i s e c c e n t r i c modern thriller in the form o f a m u s i c d r a m a T h e M a k ro p u l o s C a s e (V ě c M a k ro p u l o s ) , w h e n h e was 72 yea r s o ld . The work represents Janâček's miraculous late flowering of genius during the last decade of his life, inspired by his intense passion for Kamila Stasslova, a married woman 37 years younger, a sympathetic admirer who did not reciprocate his love.

    倫敦的歌劇界在 1733 至 1736 年間,活現了這對作曲家你死我活的激鬥!真的沒說錯,1737 年韓

    德爾大概因工作過勞而中風!他當時深受國王厚愛,其他敵對的王室成員懷着政治動機成立了一間

    新的歌劇院,名為貴族歌劇院 (The Opera of the Nobility)。歌劇院從意大利請來了龐布拿 (Nicola Porpora) 出任駐院作曲家。這位龐布拿可不是小人物,除作曲外,亦是一位著名的老師,學生包括詩人兼劇作家梅塔斯塔西奧 (Pietro Metastasio),還有著名的閹人歌手法里內利 (Farinelli)!

In September and October, Emma Liu, host of Tunes to Remember (in Cantonese) featured these rivalries in her programmes together with a selection of related music pieces.     的音樂技巧了得,但若要我選,我還是較喜歡韓德爾的作品,特別是其中動人

    大方的旋律。兩位作曲家這場長達四年的大鬥法沒好結果,最終雙方的歌劇

    院都要關閉。龐布拿選擇離開英國,韓德爾則留在英國,在創作上繼續發展

    其他範疇。

    馬蒂斯和畢加索

    馬蒂斯 (Henri Matisse)和畢加索 (Pablo Picasso) 都是二十世紀藝術大師。馬蒂斯曾形容彼此是場摔角賽。二人半帶敵意的化學作用,將現代藝術的發

    展推進一大步。比馬蒂斯年輕十二年的畢加索,總是把眼睛盯著前者的新作,

    以此為動力刺激自己的創作。約在 1906 年,畢加索正脫離了玫瑰時期 (Rose Period) 和藍色時期 (Blue Period),正要尋求突破。剛巧馬蒂斯購買了一件非洲雕塑,畢加索在一位共同認識的藝術家朋友的畫室看見了。後來,馬蒂斯

    創作了《生命的喜悅》(Le Bouheur de vivre),也給了畢加索靈感。1907 年,他創作了經典的《亞維農的少女》(Les Demoiselles d'Avignon),其中五位女子像戴了非洲土人面具似的,創作風格也預示了立體主義 (Cubism) 的新里程碑。

    Pipa DreamsThe renowned pipa soloist Yang Jing visited Hong Kong in 2009 to perform with the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong in the Pipa Concerto by Lou Harrison, whose lifelong fascination with East Asian musical traditions inspired much of his oeuvre, including this highly original, graceful showpiece for the quintessential Chinese lute. Jean Thorel conducted the Orchestra to present also Ye Xiaogang’s Nine Horses and Joshua Chan’s The Soaring Swallow II.

    琵琶夢琵琶演奏家楊靖2009年來港與香港城市室樂團合作,演出美國作曲家夏利臣極為

    原創、優美悠揚的琵琶協奏曲。夏利臣一生鍾情東亞各地傳統音樂,得到啟發而寫

    Simon Rattle and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra“What we need to hear at the moment is the Mahler Rückert-Lieder,” said Simon Rattle, who conducts the socially distanced musicians of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra with the spellbinding mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožená in this soul-searching set of songs. Completing the programme are Mozart’s Overture to The Marriage of Figaro, Dukas’ Fanfare from La Péri, and Ravel’s richly evocative ballet music Mother Goose.

    Salzburg Festival ― The Song of the EarthThe Salzburg Festival, defying coronavirus threats, took place this August to celebrate its Centenary. In a scaled-down version of the Festival, Kent Nagano conducted the Vienna ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra in Mahler’s The Song of the Earth, his profound symphonic song cycle that speaks of the earthly joys, transience, and mortality of human. Tanja Ariane Baumgartner, mezzo-soprano, and Piotr Beczała, tenor, sang. And before the poignant and resigned final movement, ‘The Farewell’, Till Fellner will play the Six Little Piano Pieces by Schoenberg, for whom Mahler was a huge inspiration.

    We experienced the first ‘Fresh Airs’ earlier this year in May. After six months, the COVID-19 pandemic is still around us. Perhaps it’s time to take a breath of fresh air again. In the fourth programme of the series, the chamber fragrance will not only fill up Broadcast Drive, but also your place. Four world premieres will be given by The RTHK Chamber Soloists in ‘Hong Kong Impressions’.

    Commissioned by RTHK Radio 4, three of the new works were sponsored by the 'CASH Music Fund'. All four composers grew up in Hong Kong; they know this city very well and also love it very much. They tell us their stories along with the history and the changes in Hong Kong over the past decades in their new works. Along with the modern harmonies and rhythms, you may also hear a few familiar Chinese folk tunes in between.

    ‘Hong Kong Impressions’ will be performed by The RTHK Chamber Soloists. The five members are Le Hoai-nam (violin), Andrew Ling (viola), Laurent Perrin (cello), John Schertle (clarinet), and Colleen Lee (piano). The piano quintet loves to play both classical masterpieces and modern works. Though they have already given the premieres of a few commissioned works, this is the first time for them to perform all the pieces together in a concert! Also, it is very special to hear a programme with such a combination of instruments! Don’t miss it!

    所不同。今場名為「香港印象」,由香港電台室樂演奏家,

    為你一次過送上四首世界首演的香港作品!

    四首新作皆由香港電台第四台委約創作,其中三首更獲得

    香港作曲家及作詞家協會「CASH 音樂基金」贊助。四位土

    生土長的作曲家,對香港的人和事、歷史和發展,以至中

    國古曲和民謠都有獨特的體會和感受。藉著四種不同創作

    風格,以鋼琴五重奏的形式展現出來。每首新作皆洋溢著

    一份對於香港、對於成長的深厚感情。

    「香港印象」將由香港電台室樂演奏家演出。此組合由五

    位香港著名音樂家組成,包括李海南 (小提琴)、凌顯 (中

    意境,來敘述「香城」的古與今。我生於香港,後來也居住過世界各地不同的

    城市,但沒有一處比得上香港獨特的活力與繁榮。

    第一樂章:「古海」,是關於一個遙遠的南方古老鄉鎮。當地人採集了一種叫

    沉香的芳香樹脂,它像黃金一樣珍貴,用海路運送各方。第二樂章:「河」,

    描繪香港在珠江口的位置。第三樂章:「港」,描述在我成長時的香港 — 彩虹

    的霓虹燈海港,比紐約曼哈頓的港口更加壯麗,充滿機會。終樂章:「鳳凰」,

    是我對香港的思念。她就像傳說中的火鳳凰,瑰麗地活著、克服、重生。

    Once upon a time, a village in the southern sea... is inspired by the geographic location of Hong Kong in different bodies of water. It tells a musical poetic story about the “fragrant harbour” from ancient times to present. I have lived in many different parts of the world, but no place compares to Hong Kong's unique cosmopolitan energy and efficient manner of life.

    The first movement, ‘Ancient Sea’, is about a remote town in the far southern seaside. Locals harvested a fragrant resin called agarwood, which is as precious as liquid gold. The second movement, ‘Mouth of the River’, depicts Hong Kong’s location at the mouth of the Pearl River system. The third movement, ‘Hong Kong's Manhattan’, my childhood, depicts the Hong Kong where I grew up — a rainbow-coloured harbour with the promise of opportunities. The last movement, ‘Phoenix’, is my nostalgic reflection of Hong Kong. She is like the legendary fiery bird, who blossoms, endures, survives, and is reborn.

  • 《官塘記事》由七首小品組成,每一首小品描繪官塘的一個獨有景色。第一樂章:

    「官富」,名字取材於明朝《粵大記》所記載舊時官塘的名字。第二樂章:「新市」,

    描繪五十年代官塘發展為新市鎮的故事。第三樂章:「廠」,乃刻劃以前香港工業

    蓬勃的日子。第四樂章:「雞寮」,是一首對 1972 年雨災的輓歌。第五樂章:「鐵

    路」,記載昔日官塘逐漸變得現代化的重要建設。第六樂章:「商」,見證官塘慢

    慢轉型成為商業區;而最後的樂章:「重建」,則緬懷一去不反的舊日美好時光。

    The Book of Kwun Tong is a collection of seven short pieces, with each depicting an important stage/incident of Kwun Tong, a district in Hong Kong. The work begins with the first movement, ‘Kwun Foo’, which was an older name of the district in the Ming Dynasty, according to Yuet Tai Kei. The second movement, ‘New Town’, depicts the development of Kwun Tong in the 1950s, and the third movement, ‘Factory’, portrays how Kwun Tong gradually became an industrial centre. The fourth movement, ‘Kai Liu’, laments the flooding incident in 1972, and the fifth movement, ‘Train’, describes the construction of the Kwun Tong MTR station in 1979. The sixth movement, ‘Business’, depicts the transformation of Kwun Tong into a business district, and the final movement, ‘Rebuild’, mourns for the recent redevelopment.

  • 這首樂曲的標題和內容取材自創作的地方。剛巧某天幫個朋友的忙,去了虎豹別

    墅,途中空餘在花園向山下望,尋覓一個有關香港的作曲題材。望著這剛復修的

    古式大宅,於是決定,就地取材吧。

    樂曲分為三個樂章,分別為「青山道 800 號」、「大坑道 15 號 A」和「運頭角

    里 11 號」。三個地址均為「香港活化歷史建築夥伴計劃」的歷史建築,也是小

    弟在創作那一年去過的。從一個比較繁囂的地段走到山上比較清幽之處,是它們

    的共通點,也是構成樂章結構的骨幹,然後把眼看見的、耳聽見的,主觀地描繪

    出來,就像寫描寫文一樣,只是利用的工具不是文字,而是音樂。

    The music and its title came from the place where I wrote this piece. I visited Haw Par Mansion to help with my friend’s project. I walked around the garden during the break, thought about the idea for my new composition, and was inspired by the gorgeous place I was standing in.

    The music is divided into three sections, with subtitles ‘800 Castle Peak Road’, ‘15A Tai Hang Road’, and ‘11 Wang Tau Kok Lane’. The historical buildings of these addresses are parts of the ‘Revitalizing Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme’. I have been to these places before. They are all on a hill away from crowded streets. The journeys to these buildings from downtown are the backbones of the works’ overall structure. The sceneries I have seen and the sound I have heard were depicted with music rather than verbal language.

  • 《中國民歌集》是我在 2018 年為香港電台室樂演奏家成立音樂會所

    寫的加奏創作-《青春舞曲》所延伸出來的一套編曲,我另外加上

    了三首我喜歡的中國民歌:《康定情歌》、《繡荷包》和《小白菜》。

    這套編曲的中心思想是東西匯聚:以西方樂器演奏中國民歌。在這套

    曲中,我嘗試運用不同的西方作曲技巧和風格與原始的中國民歌結

    合。其中兩首還加插了從馬勒、史特拉汶斯基的作品,以及《上海灘》

    得來的一小句,藉以顯出當中的不同含意。喬治.克拉姆的四套《美

    國歌集》啟發我不少。為了盡量令每首民歌都送上耳目一新的感覺,

    我在四個樂章各自帶來不同的西方風格,希望聽眾能享受這四首不一

    樣的中國民歌。

    I wrote this as an extension of an earlier work, Dance of Youth, that I finished in 2018 for the encore in the Inaugural Concert of The RTHK Chamber Soloists. I added three other Chinese folk tunes that I also like, Kangding Love Song, Embroidering a Purse, and Little Cabbage.

    The main idea of this set is East meets West: using Western instruments to play Chinese folk tunes. In this set, I tried to apply different Western compositional techniques and styles to mix with the original Chinese folk tunes. There are even two very short quotations by Mahler, Stravinsky, and a famous pop song Shanghai Tang in two of them to enhance the feeling and meaning of the songs. The four sets of the American Songbook written by George Crumb inspired me. In order to let each folk tune have a refreshing impression, each movement was written using different techniques and styles. Hope you would enjoy these original transcriptions of the four Chinese folk tunes.

  • In the past months, the arts and cultural scene has experienced some of its longest dark days. With very few live performances, we see more music performed online and music-lovers sharing their recitals via the web to friends near and afar. To enhance the pleasure of music-making among students of all ages and cultivate the interest in music appreciation in the general community, Radio 4 proudly presents ‘Student Concert Hall’. We believe that one of the biggest rewards to aspiring musicians is to be able to share their love of music with music lovers. After adjudication, audio recordings of selected student artists will be broadcast on Radio 4 and uploaded onto RTHK’s website. In addition to the performances, interviews of selected students may also appear in the programme.

    Here are some highlights:Application is open to all full-time students who have a HKID card and are studying in a recognised school or educational institute in Hong Kong or abroad. Recent graduates from the 2019-2020 academic year are also welcome.We welcome both solos and groups.Applicants should submit their performance clips to RTHK Radio 4 through the event’s webpage. Clips submitted do not need to be current, old recordings are acceptable. We even take clips that have been shared on social media. Duration is flexible, too. It can range from a single short piece, to a collection of pieces, or a multi-movement complete work. The maximum total duration for a submission is 35 minutes.Applicants may play or sing works from the fine music repertoire. Western classical, jazz, Chinese, and world music are all welcome.

    凡持有香港身份證及在認可的本地或海外學校或教育機構就讀的全日制學生均可報名。在 2019-2020 學年畢業

    的同學亦歡迎參加。

  • My videos are homemade, and the quality is not as professional as those made in studios. I

    fear I will have a slim chance of being selected.

    ‘School Concert Hall’ is about community involvement, while some clips may have been

    recorded in studios, we also expect to receive submissions of homemade clips with decent

    recording quality. If you are going to make new recordings, don’t forget to observe appropriate

    social distancing while producing your video clips.

    I am a retiree and am now back to school. Can I form a duo with my grandchild who is in

    kindergarten, and join the event?

    There is no age limit. All full-time students who have a HKID card and are studying in a

    recognised school or educational institute in Hong Kong or abroad can apply.

    I have some video clips with me performing with my school orchestra and other ensembles.

    Can I submit them?

    We welcome both solos and groups. While an accompanist, accompanying ensemble or

    orchestral players do not have to be students, all members of an ensemble entry such as

    duo, trio, quartet or string orchestra have to be students. The applicant must declare that the

    performance in the recording has been given by him/her/the said ensemble or orchestra.

    I am a Hong Kong student currently studying overseas. Can I take part in this event?

    Yes, by all means! Should your performance(s) be chosen, you will be asked to provide audio

    file(s) of selected work(s) to Radio 4 for broadcast. You will also need to show proof of your

    student status for the 2019-2020 or 2020-2021 academic year for verification purpose. You

    can authorise someone in Hong Kong to submit that on your behalf.

    It is mentioned that videos submitted should be performed-through without editing. What

    about multi-angle shooting?

    「學界音樂廳」沒有年齡限制,由三歲到一百歲都可以報名,只要你是全職學生

    就可以了。

    我有一些跟學校樂團和其他樂團合演的影片,可否用作參加甄選?

    不論是獨奏 /獨唱、小組或以樂隊伴奏形式都無任歡迎。這項活動雖然要求所有

    獨奏 /獨唱和小組成員須為學生,但對伴奏、伴奏小組或樂團的成員則沒有限制。

    參加者須確認錄音是由其本人 /伴奏 /小組 /樂團成員擔任演出。以二重奏 / 三重

    奏 /四重奏 /弦樂團等組合參加的隊伍及成員,則全部均須為學生。

    我是身在海外的香港學生,可以報名參加嗎?

    十分歡迎!若你的演出獲邀在第四台播放,我們會再請你提交該演出的聲音檔案,

    以及 2019-2020 或 2020-2021 年度的學生證明文件以茲確認。屆時你可授權親友

    代為提交相關資料。

  • Orchestras worldwide are financially tight during the COVID-19 pandemic, and management often needs to rack their brains to think about how to sail through the storm. However, a renowned Latvian conductor received two pieces of good news during this difficult time. Both the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig have extended their contracts with Andris Nelsons, the parties announced last month.

    The 41-year-old Andris Nelsons has been serving as the Music Director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra since 2014 and has been highly praised for his work. Under the new contract, he will remain their Music Director through the 2024-2025 season. By that time, he will have spent ten years with the Orchestra. Mark Volpe, President and CEO of the Boston Symphony Orchestra expressed that the extension of Andris Nelsons’ contract is an especially meaningful moment with the challenges posed by the pandemic. “This wonderful news points to the Orchestra’s bright future,” he added. In the coming seasons, Andris Nelsons will continue their plans of performing and recording the Shostakovich symphony cycle, as well as commissioning more works by younger composers.

    As for the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, they have extended Andris Nelsons’ contract to 2027. In addition, the two orchestras will continue their alliance. Musicians will have a chance to exchange ideas and perform with the other orchestra. “I am extremely grateful and honoured to continue my musical journey with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Gewandhausorchester Leipzig in the coming years”, Andris Nelsons said. “The dedicated trust my two musical families have placed in me as their conductor and colleague is truly a gift that I cherish so passionately and embrace with all my heart.”

    疫情持續,各地樂團財政緊絀,管理層都要絞盡腦汁,思考如何渡過難關。然而,拉脫維亞指揮尼遜斯卻在這業界寒冬迎來好消息。波士頓交響樂團及萊比錫布業公會樂團同時在上月初宣佈,延長音樂總監尼遜斯的合約,可謂雙喜臨門。

    現年四十一歲的尼遜斯在 2014 年開始出任波士頓交響樂團的音樂總監,表現備受讚賞。新合約將會延長他的任期到 2024 至 2025 年樂季,屆時他便與樂團共度了十個寒暑。樂團主席兼行政總裁霍比表示,在疫情期間延長尼遜斯的合約別具意義,預示樂團前景一片光明。在未來數年,波士頓交響樂團將會繼續與尼遜斯合作,完成演出及錄製蕭斯達高維契交響曲全集的計劃,亦會委約更多年輕作曲家譜寫新作品。

    至於萊比錫布業公會樂團則延長尼遜斯的職務至 2027 年。此外,兩個樂團亦會繼續保持良好的合作關係,樂手將有機會到友團交流及演出。對於今次獲延長合約,尼遜斯表示相當榮幸能夠在兩個樂團繼續他的音樂之旅,亦感激樂團的信任。
