A publication of First Christian Church of Edmond, OK
CONNECTIONVol. 5 No. 26 July 3, 2013
Freedom SundayBy Rev. Dr. Jerry Black,Associate Minister
Every
year, it
smacks
of
outdoor
barbecues, bug spray, John
Phillip Sousa, cannons, fireworks,
Liberty Fest, hot dogs, and
watermelon. It resounds with the
principles of life, liberty, and the
pursuit of happiness. And it calls
to mind that audacious, proud
moment when our founding
fathers signed the Declaration of
Independence. Thus this weekscelebration of Independence Day.
While serving as an
Army Chaplain for the 7th
Transportation Group at Fort
Eustis, Virginia, I conducted at
least four God and Country
retreats to Washington, DC. The
assignment was simple. Soldiers
were to take a break from the
intense pace of their day-to-day
mission, appreciate history, and
have some fun. But they wereto do one
other thing.
They were to
take special
note of the
innumerable
references to
God found
at the major
monuments
and in the
buildings we visited. In short,
they were to absorb the obvious
role of faith in Godat whatever
levelwas evident in the
founders of our country. And as
most of us know, its significant.
So, celebrating the Fourth of
July is an appropriate thing for us
to do, because it is a celebration
about more than the birth of
a nation. Its about freedom,
the kind God gives each of us
through Jesus. We who are
members of Gods familythe
Churchhave every reason to
be at this party, to celebrate, andto proclaim liberty through all the
land, for we have been set free.
Join us this Sunday for
Freedom Sunday as we extend
the celebration of Independence
Day to the love of God and the
freedoms we know in Christ.
Come, worship, and stay for the
indoor picnicfried chicken,
potato salad, beans, dessertand
fun! Oh, and its free. Ring
any bells?
In conjunction with the annual Edmond Liberty
Fest Parade on July 4th, 2013, First Christian
will host another Freedom Fest and distribute
free hot dogs, chips, bottles of water, and
watermelon to over 1,000 of the 50,000 paradeattendees. We also plan on handing out mini
American flags!
This wonderful event affords us a grand
opportunity to partner with our community in
serving others. And it gives us a superb moment to
demonstrate our deep commitment to one of our core
values: radical hospitality.
Join us on this day of national patriotism,
community celebration, and faith in action. We are sti
in need of your help. Show up on July 4th and well
find you a spot to join in the fun!

All entry door locks - for the main church building and the Family Life Center
- have been changed (with the exception of the exterior door to BOB - it is
the same). This means the keys will no longer work on exterior doors.
Access to the exterior doors will be limited to access entry codes, access cards
or fobs only. Access entry codes or cards are distributed by FCCEs BusinessAdministrator, Karla Mahan.
All interior locks will remain the same. So, those with a key should keep their
keys for the doors to the classrooms and closets in each building.
Also, for security purposes, please do not unlock exterior doors for your
meetings. Participants in your meetings can be given the access entry codes. They
will work only during your meeting times, and allow access to the building for all
your participants.
If you previously had an entry key, you should have received an access code,
card or new fob from the office. If you did not receive a code or if you have
questions, contact Karla Mahan at 341-3544 or [email protected]
