6 July 2014

An aura of comfort, reassurance and gentleness surrounds today's readings creating a 'feel good' atmosphere. In the Gospel, Jesus reveals the motherly love of God as he invites all who labour and are overburdened to come to him for rest.

Are we tempted to dismiss this as too simple, too immature, failing to take account of the evil that we encounter every day?

There is a place for a childlike, simple faith. The learned and the clever who know all about the world sometimes miss the wonder and the mystery that children see.

As parents know, there is a time for speaking sternly to children and a time for simply holding them in their arms.

Today let us accept the invitation to a simple yet deep faith that in God 'all shall be well'.

PARISH NEWS

VALE: Parishioners have been saddened to learn of the death last week of Alle Tesoriero, daughter of longstanding parishioner, Barry Brunning. We extend sympathies to Barry, Alle’s husband Adam, and all her family. Alle’s funeral was held on Friday at St John the Baptist Catholic Church, Freshwater.

Music notes for today’s Family Eucharist: The anthem for today is the plainsong hymn ‘Ubi Caritas’ the usual translation of which is ‘Where there is love and charity, then God is there. We are drawn together as one congregation through his love’. The voluntary is by the contemporary English composer and organist Andrew Carter, who has written extensively for the organ. The ‘Trumpet Tune’ was written for the wedding of friends of the composer and is an excellent show piece for our new tuba.

St John’s Men’s Group Breakfast on Saturday 19 July in the Parish Centre

will follow the 7:30am Eucharist. Our guest, parishioner and police force officer, Winston Langthorne, is to speak on “how policing both challenges and affirms one’s faith”. All welcome ($5 donation invited); to assist with catering, please add your name to the list in the lobby.

Mothers’ Union: Reminder that instead of the usual July meeting, St John’s MU branch will be visiting St Faith’s Narrabeen for the annual Deanery Day on Wednesday 16 July. The speaker will be Wendy Mayer the Diocesan MU president. For information, please speak with Margaret Winters.

St John’s Songbirds: Our Friday Café clients will be delighted to know that

the Singing Mums Group has now re-formed as “The Songbirds” and is planning their rehearsals on Friday mornings (excluding the Op Shop Fridays). As well as singing at elderly people’s homes from time to time, a highlight of the year is their rendition of carols in the Onshore Café, Dee Why Beach at Christmas time. Our thanks and encouragement to the Songbirds to keep enjoying their music.

St John’s Recycling Program: Parishioners are invited to use the collection boxes at the back of the Church for recycling small batteries, candles, corks, printer ink and toner cartridges, spectacles, sunglasses and spectacle cases, and also for used postage stamps and phonecards to help the work of ABM.

People in our Prayers: Pam Andersen and her family have sent grateful

thanks to all at St John’s for the love, prayers, support and visits that they are receiving from parishioners. Pam is recovering well and now recuperating at Lady Davidson Hospital – she would love to receive visitors.

Happy Birthday to Leonie Wenning (7th), Chris Dimock (9th), Winston Langthorne (11th)

Welcome to Rebecca (Beck) Whelan, Administration Coordinator: At

its last meeting, the Parish Council approved an appointment to this position, created as a consequence of Graeme’s previously-announced need to draw back from the role, and the workload which has grown markedly over recent years. Beck, a mother of two young boys, Edward and Henry, with her husband Joe, lives locally; and as if that is not enough to keep her busy, she has offered to work on a part-time basis at St John’s (twelve hours usually over Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings). Beck has studied in management, has extensive administration experience and brings good computer skills to the work.

There is much that is hidden in the parish administration role; the work includes preparation of the Sunday papers (also printing of service sheets, flyers and brochures), oversight of parish records (e.g. for baptisms), distribution of mail, maintenance of our “flexible” rosters and volunteer liaison, attention to critical parish returns, management of office procedures and systems (both electronic and hard-copy). One person can’t do it all, and none of this is possible without the continued assistance and dedication of our many volunteers and their reception, welcoming and hospitality activities.

Parishioners are warmly invited to visit the Café on a Tuesday or Friday morning and introduce yourselves. From the outset Beck has commented how impressed she is by the rich diversity of our people, and the commitment of so many volunteers and others to our ethos of “worship, fellowship and service”.

Archbishop Freier elected as Australia's next Primate: Philip Freier,

Anglican Archbishop of Melbourne since 2006 has been elected by a special synod of laymen, clergy and bishops from around the country (coming to this role as Brisbane Archbishop Phillip Aspinall steps down after nine years). Raised in a working class family in Brisbane, he went on to studies in science and education, and has worked extensively among indigenous communities in Far North Queensland and Northern Territory. While in Melbourne he set out to encourage all Anglicans, and tensions there eased enormously, attributed in part to his calm nature, even-handedness, willingness to listen, and desire to engage widely. Please see the noticeboard for more information. (source: Anglican Communion News Service).

Red Cross Blood Service: One in three Australians will need blood, but only one in thirty donates. Donated blood helps cancer patients, people with blood disorders, mothers-to-be and newborn babies, as well as trauma and surgical patients. The Mobile Blood Service is at Dee Why Surf Club this week on 7-10 July (12:30-7:00pm Mon-Tue, 9:30am-4:00pm Wed-Thu). Please see the notice board in the lobby. To donate, first book a time on 13 14 95, then eat a substantial meal and drink three to four glasses of water in the hours before. Take your donor card or photo ID when you visit.
