about amarestone… a passion for stone

Steve and Denise Turner photographed at the stonemasonry workshop

The Amarestone story began in 2003 when we leftour ‘day jobs’ and set up a business importingFrench Limestone directly from a small group ofquarries in Burgundy.

Several years on and our Berkshire-based businessnow imports an extensive range of Limestone,Marble, Slate, Travertine, Granite and Basalt fromsome of the world’s best quarries in more than adozen countries across Europe, South America andthe Middle East.

Our focus has always been on sourcing the highestquality materials to satisfy the most discerningcustomers whether they are architects, interiordesigners or private clients. We continue toresearch new quarries and products and many ofour stones are produced by small, independentquarries and are rarely available from the normaloutlets in the UK.

More recently, Amarestone has established closeworking relationships with a number of UKquarries and we are proud to be able to offer newBritish products to our clients.

Private client

Location:Private house, Buckinghamshire

Requirements:• To renovate an antique Victorian black and white marble

floor and steps in a wine storage room.

• Identify and source additional black and white marble tiles tomatch the existing for a new conservatory.

• Install and seal the new flooring so that it is protectedagainst possible staining from red wine.

Solution:• From our experience, the existing floor appeared to be

marble from northern Italy so we sent photos to one of ourtrusted Italian quarries. The black marble was quicklyrecognised as a stone from the region and the white marblewas identified as a now rare form of Calacatta, also from thearea. After sourcing a block of the Calacatta, we asked thequarry to produce both sets of marble tiles so that we couldbe assured of an even size and degree of honing across thenew floor. They also made some larger pieces that we fittedas full width thresholds for the doorways.

• Our experts renovated the existing floor and steps byrepairing chips and cracks so that they became virtuallyinvisible. They then cleaned and re-polished the floor to bringback the lustre that a hundred years of wear had dulled.

• After installation, the new floor was sealed with Fila Fob toprovide protection against water-based and oil-based stains(including red wine) and finished the old and new with FilaClassic Wax to give a similar degree of lustre across bothsurfaces.

“Now that John Montgomery has finished laying the marble floor in ourconservatory and repairing our marble floored wine room, I feel I must letyou know how impressed I have been with your professionalism from theday I contacted you through to the completion of the job.

As requested, you have matched the new marble in our conservatory to the antique marble in our wine room so closely that it is impossible to tell the difference.

Your estimates of timings were always adhered to and your advice and friendly manner were greatly appreciated.

John's workmanship was second to none and he was always polite, punctual and tidy. It is so rare in this day and age to receive this level ofservice and civility.

You are welcome to use my name as a referee to potential customers. Once again, thank you for your service.”

Requirements:• Luxury bathroom to include a shower tray made from

a single slab of stone with matching floor and wall tiles andbath surround.

• Antiqued marble flooring in the conservatory with underfloorheating so the space can be used all year round.

• Swimming pool to be fully lined in large marble tiles that will not be affected by the pool’s chlorination system.Matching marble for the pool surround, adjacent gym, shower room and changing rooms. • The pool surround and coping stones were specially made by the quarry with final finishing by our stonemasons toensure a perfect fit. The pool was lined with the same marblecut to a specific size. We consulted the Fila and Mapeitechnical departments (sealer and adhesives manufacturers)who provided test results to demonstrate that the solutionwould withstand the particular type of chlorination system.
