I-26 paving to continue through Sept.$9.3 million project covers 9.2 milesby Leah Justice

Paving currently under way on more than nine miles of I-26 in Polk County is scheduled to be complete Sept. 30, according to N.C. Department of Transpor-tation (DOT) officials.

The $9.3 million paving project, which began in April, will cover 9.2 miles between Saluda and the South Carolina state line.

The project was part of $679 million awarded to North Car-olina through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for 43 highway and bridge projects in the state.

The resurfacing project is be-ing done on both the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-26 between mile marker 61 and the South Carolina state line.

Hospitality tax revenue drops; town budgets $12k for streetscapeby Leah Justice

Tryon’s tourism develop-ment fund will be functioning next year on 56 percent less in revenue.

Tryon Town Council is working on its proposed bud-get for fiscal year 2010-2011,

which will begin July 1. Tryon Town Manager Justin Hembree says the tourism fund is seeing a direct impact from the econ-omy. Revenue from tourism's hospitality tax is lower as fewer visitors come to the area, and the town is not contributing as much from its general fund.

The proposed tourism bud-get, which has not yet been approved by the town’s tourism development authority board, is expected to decrease from

$41,000 this year to $18,005 next year.

The town is expecting $3,000 less in hospitality tax revenue, from $14,000 this year to $11,000 next year, or a 21.43 percent decrease.

The town also this year con-tributed $27,000 from its fund balance to fund the new tourism department and is budgeting only $7,005 next fiscal year.

French chef joins Stone Soup, lawyers merge firmsLake Lure Golf Course reopened

Jean Pierre “JP” Debeuf is the new executive chef at Stone Soup Market & Cafe in Landrum. Debeuf, a native of Nice, France, formerly worked as executive

chef of Elixir restaurant in Vermont.

He studied culinary arts at Thonon-

les-Bains and then went to Boston on an exchange program with the Meridian Hotel.

“My cooking philosophy is not to buy pre-made food, but to make as much as possible in the kitchen,” Debeuf says. The chef says he especially enjoys food from France, fresh seafood and grilled meats.

A summer menu featuring Mediterranean dishes will be com-ing out in early June.

* * *The Town of Lake Lure has

awarded a five-year contract to the Course Doctors of Flat Rock, NC. to renovate, maintain and operate the Lake Lure Golf Club.

Happy Fox, PGA professional at High-land Lake Golf Club in Flat Rock, will be the profes-sional.

The Lake Lure Golf Club start-ed in 1926 when Lucious Morse proposed the course. The goal was to have as many as three golf courses and to direct the devel-opment for the area to be a year around resort style community. A design of the golf course, by legendary architect Donald Ross is set in place and construction began in 1927.

By late 1929-1930, 9 holes were completed and 9 holes in process or under construc-tion. However, all construction stopped due to the Great Depres-sion. Then in 1932, the Lureland Realty Corp. owned by Lucious Morse transferred ownership of the golf course to the Town of Lake Lure. The clubhouse for the golf course was built in 1935, a WPA Project. The Town of Lake

Lure maintained and operated the course until December 2009.

In 2009 the Town of Lake Lure began considering proposals to renovate, maintain, and operate the golf course. The contract was awarded to the Course Doctors, Inc., out of Flat Rock, NC. The Course Doctors, founded in 1992, specialize in golf course construc-tion and renovations.

Many of the courses Course D o c t o r s h a v e worked on have won awards, such as: Mountain Top

Club and The Club at Irish Creek, both listed in “Top New Courses in 2008” by Golf Week. The Grove Park Inn and Resort, a Donald Ross Design, won “Best Renova-tion 2002.”

The Course Doctors also own and operate Highland Lake Golf Club.

In recent months, the firm has rebuilt the greens and converted to bent grass, rebuilt all existing tee boxes and constructed several new tees to increase playability, restored all bunkers, and updated the irrigation system,

The pro shop also is in the pro-cess of being updated, along with general landscaping improve-ments around the clubhouse. “It is the goal of Course Doctors to give the Town of Lake Lure a course that they can be proud of and will be an asset to the local tourism industry,” Fox said.

Shirley Odel, Polk County agent for N.C. Farm Bureau Mutal Insurance Co., was named among the Top 75 agents for 2009 at the annual sales conference of the Farm Bureau Insurance companies held in Greensboro in March.

Once upon a time, not

so long ago, a local couple

happened upon a skinny

little Appaloosa mare in a

dirt lot. Her owner no longer

wanted to trail ride her; she

wasn’t needed any more.

Luckily this couple knew

a few things about horses

and decided to take her

home with them and find

the little mare a new family.

Some extra food, good grass

and a few trail rides later this

couple put an ad up in the

local feed store.

At this very same time, a

sweet “horse crazy” young

girl had convinced her

parents to let her take some

riding lessons. She caught

the bug and now dreamed of

having her own horse. After

some poking and prodding

her parents answered an ad

they found at the local feed

store: an Appaloosa mare –

for sale! The little girl, whose name

is Amanda, met the little

mare, who’s name is Nia,

and as most dreams happen

(when they come true) it was

destined they be together.

One man's trash is another's treasure

Amanda started to take

lessons from a local profes-

sional. After about six weeks

of lessons Amanda and Nia

entered the Foothills Riding

Club Horse Trial at FENCE

where they won their dres-

sage class and successfully

completed the cross-country

course and stadium jump-

ing. They ended up high

Other work to be done is repairing the median wall and completing paving on the moun-tain section up to Saluda.

The Asheville Kids Party is pitching its tents and unloading its fun-stuffed trunks for two full days of wholesome, creative fun for children at the Blue Ridge Barbecue & Music Festival, June 11 and 12 at Harmon Field. And it is all included in the admis-sion at the gate (children 12 and under are admitted free).

The brainchild of Chuck Wil-lard, the Asheville Kids Party is well known in the area for providing innovative and imagi-native fun wherever it appears. Kids at the barbecue can join in a game of water-balloon bowling, help set up a Domino disaster or try their skill with marbles. They can dress up in the princess tent and the costume tent; create art with survey tape; put their mark on a mural; and more.

The town spent $6,000 on brochures/printing this year and is budgeting nothing next year. The website also cost $10,000 which will cost nothing next year. Other line items in the tourism budget include search engine optimization at $3,000 this year and nothing next year; directory listings and host dues at $1,000 this year and nothing next year; and interstate signage at $15,000 this year and $12,000 next year.

Tourism development direc-tor Crys Armbrust said he will function the same next year as he has this year with no operational funding. He says he plans to seek private funding and grants for projects as he did this year.

The town has budgeted $12,000 to begin work on its downtown streetscape project. Armbrust says he plans to use the $12,000 as leverage to seek a grant for additional funding.

Hembree was directed this week to work with the Tryon Downtown Development As-sociation (TDDA) design com-mittee to determine what im-provements can be done for the streetscape project for phase I.

Armbrust’s position is funded jointly through the town, the Tryon Tourism Development Authority (TTDA) and the TDDA.

Discounted Penland classes available for area residents

Penland School of Crafts has open spaces in several of its second summer session classes available at half tuition to resi-dents of the following West-ern North Carolina counties: Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Caldwell, Cherokee, Clay, Gran-ville, Graham, Haywood, Hen-derson, Jackson, Macon, Madi-son, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Swain, Transylvania, Watauga, and Yancey; and the following counties in East Ten-nessee: Carter, Cocke, Greene, Johnson, Sullivan, Unicoi, and Washington. Douglas Harling’s workshop will focus on surface techniques for cre-ating imagery in precious metals; David Clemons will teach a class covering raised metal vessels.

Photographer Kyle Bajakian will lead a workshop in landscape photography and traditional black and white printing. In the textiles studio Chunghie Lee will teach a class in “pojagi,” a traditional Korean art form that pieces together fabric or paper with decorative stitching tech-niques. Also in textiles, Vincent Martinez will lead a session of fashion design. All of these second-session classes are open to students of all levels.

Tryon Riding & Hunt Club announces scholarship winners

Four years ago at the urging of Board of Director member Nancy Z. Wilson, the Tryon Riding & Hunt Club created a scholarship fund for worthy equestrian-oriented graduating seniors and those attending in-stitutions of higher education. As a criteria, all applicants must be involved in equine activities in the Polk County/Upstate region. This program is in addition to the TR&HC scholarship available through the Polk County Com-munity Foundation.

The Tryon Riding & Hunt Club recognizes and congratu-lates Kristen Cox, Madeleine Fahnley and Julie Mathis as the recipients of the 2010 TR&HC Educational Scholarship. All three exemplify the spirit of the award by knowing that eques-

trian activities teach hard work, dedication, time management, responsibility and teamwork.

The TR&HC scholarship se-lection committee consisted of John Vining, Billie Jordan and Chadd Murray.

The 2010 Tryon Kiwanis/Coop-erative Extension Men’s Cooking Class successfully completed their 10-week course and celebrated with a gala graduation at the Stone Hedge Inn. Innkeepers Tom and Shaula Dinsmore hosted the group with a celebration lunch May 4. This group is the 24rd class to graduate from the Men’s Cooking Class in Polk County.

Chef Tom Dinsmore treated the men to a cooking demonstration of creating a versatile lemon sauce to use with various dishes. Dinsmore shared his recipe with the students, and offered witty and practical tips to make recipes work at home. Class members expressed awe at Dinsmore’s ability to turn out such great food in volume in his one-chef kitchen.

One graduate, Don Lyons after completing the cooking course said, “We all enjoyed the class immensely and I would recommend it to all men who are interested in learning to cook or improve their cooking skills. We also enjoyed the good fellowship and great food.” The 2010 graduates received a certificate of completion. Their graduation represents 10-weeks of class work,

meal preparation, and great strides in their levels of confidence in the kitchen. Tryon Kiwanis Club and NC Cooperative Extension – Polk County Center continue to sponsor the course for the benefit of men who need to acquire or update meal preparation skills. N.C. Humanities Council calls for submissions for literary award

The North Carolina Humani-ties Council, a statewide non-profit and affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, invites original entries of fiction, nonfiction, or poetry for the 2010 Linda Flowers Literary Award. The postmark deadline for sub-missions is August 15.

The Linda Flowers Literary Award is given annually by the North Carolina Humanities Council for unpublished writing that portrays North Carolina, its people, and cultures. While authors do not have to be North Carolinians, entries are expected

to draw on North Carolina con-nections and/or memories.

The North Carolina Humani-ties Council will award the author of the wining entry a cash prize of $500, publication in the Humanities Council’s biannual magazine North Caro-lina Conversations, and support towards a writer’s residency at Weymouth Center for the Arts and Humanities.

There is no entry fee. Entries should be no longer than 2,500 words and five copies of an entry should be submitted. For a complete description and full

Polk County Public Library receives summer intern grant from PCCF

Thanks to a contribution from the Polk County Community Foundation, the Polk County Public Library will once again employ a local youth as a Sum-mer Intern for the Columbus and Saluda Libraries.

The Summer Intern Program has been a valuable asset to the library’s dedication to improved patron services. In past sum-mers, the intern has helped the Children’s Service’s Coordinator expand the Summer Reading Pro-gram to include more activities for children.

This year, the program’s theme is “Make a Splash” and will include performances by magicians, musicians, animal programs, theater groups and splashing in local streams and rivers.

In addition, there will be ongoing activities and games offered at both branches of the library.

Kids participating in the pro-gram keep a reading log through-out the summer to track the books

they read and programs they attend. Certificates and prizes are awarded at the end of the summer.

Area students interested in applying for the Summer Intern position at the Polk County Public

BBQ Festival is ‘on the air’Be listening and watching on

June 9 and 10 as various members of the Blue Ridge Barbecue & Music Festival committee and other festi-val supporters appear on radio and television shows.

On Wednesday, June 9, Peter Eisenbrown, the festival’s entertain-ment director, and Shane Black-well, barbecue chef extraordinaire and owner/operator of Mountain View Barbecue and Deli, will be interviewed on “Noon News with Fred Cunningham” on WSPA-TV (Channel 7).

Also on Wednesday Geoff Achi-son’s band will perform live on WNCW 88.7 FM Radio at 3 p.m. This band will be performing Friday evening, June 11, at the festival. The radio schedule is not yet confirmed, so check with the WNCW website, www.WNCW.org.

On Thursday, June 10, Allison Gillespie will be the festival spokes-

person on the “MY40 in the Morn-ing” show which airs from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. on WMYA (Channel 40). Two members of The Honeycutters, one of the music groups scheduled to entertain at the festival this year, will also be featured.

That same day at 10 a.m., Kelly Sparks, who serves as the festival’s craft fair chair, will be on “Your Carolina with Jack and Kimberly” on WSPA (Channel 7), along with Shane Blackwell - who will also ap-pear that day in the “Carolina Kitch-en” sergment of WLOS’ (Channel 13) noon news. (No, he won’t have broken any land speed records get-ting from Spartanburg to Asheville - the Carolina Kitchen segment will be taped on Thursday, June 3).

One other interview that day will be at 11 a.m. on WGWG 88.3 Fm Radio. Peter Eisenbrown will be talking about the festival with emphasis on the entertainment he

has lined up for both days.The 17th annual festival is set

for June 11 and 12 at Harmon Field in Tryon. Gates open at 3 p.m. on Friday and at 10 a.m. on Saturday, closing both nights at 11 p.m. There will be championship barbecue with all the trimmings, a craft fair, carnival rides and games and other activities for the youngsters and, of course, the big cookoff. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 80 teams are expected to be on hand, vying for the trophies and cash prizes.

Tickets price includes shuttle parking and all concerts. Kids 12 and under get in free with a paying adult and, on Friday, they get unlimited rides from 3 to 7 p.m. for a small fee.
