SUMMERTIME SURVIVAL 101
Well, its official, summer has arrived in Tucson
and the outlook is hot and dry. It is important to
practice Summer Safety and protect yourself not
just from sunburns, but from dehydration. With our higher
temperatures HYDRATION is key to enjoying a fun, active
lifestyle during the summer months. During warm weather, it
is recommended that we drinkEIGHT 8-oz glasses of water
daily. Fluids are vital to our bodys functions as they aid in
metabolism, regulate body temperature, prevent constipationand hydrate cells in the body to function optimally.
When the body is NOT properly hydrated, our organs have to
work harder. The body then tries to create fluids by breaking
down muscle tissue which is not ideal for maintaining overall
good health. SoBOTTOMS UP! Carry a bottle of water with
you wherever you go, including bus trips to shopping and
medical appointments. Enjoy fruit and keep popsicles on hand
as a cool and tasty way to get more fluids.
To make the most of our summer months, avoid Peak Heat
hours when exercising outsideremember to walk during the
early mornings or later in the evenings. Some people think
about sun protection only when they spend a day at the beach
or pool. But sun exposure adds up day after day, every time you
are in the sun. So Slip! Slop! Slap! and Wrap to protect your-
self from UV rays: Slip on a shirt, Slop on sunscreen, Slap on
a hat and Wrap on sunglasses to protect the eyes and sensitive
skin around them. These steps provide the best sun protectionwhen used together. The American Academy of Dermatology
recommends using products with an SPF (Sun Protection
Factor) of at least 30. The SPF number represents the level of
protection against UVB rays the sunscreen provides.
Theres a lot going on at Fellowships Square this summer, both
indoors and out, so keep your body hydrated, practice sun
safety and enjoy a healthy and fun summer!

LIBRARY CORNERAn enormous number of residents have
requested another quizactually the
number is five or six. But they said that these little
quizzes make us think & remember. Sometimes a
quiz is fun if a teacher doesnt record the score.
Todays quiz is modeled on an old radio program
that most of us remember as The $64 Question.
The game started with a question worth $1.00 and
doubled with each question up to $64 dollars, with
each question being a little harder than the previous.
Lets give it a go now. Put on your thinking caps
and try this for $1.00:
________ Abraham Lincoln began a speech by
saying, Four score and seven years ago. Write thedate he was referring to in the blank.
_________(For $2) The name of the American sea
captain who once boldly said, I have not yet
begun to fight when he was ordered to surrender.
_________(For $4) Date when the Declaration of
Independence was signed.
_________(For $8) Initials for the person who was
President of the United States when the Korean
War was beginning.
_________(For $16) In 1607, the first permanent
colony was established in an area that became a
state. Name the state.
_________(For $32) In 1917, an American
president declared war against an enemy to, as he
said, To make the world safe for Democracy.
Name that President.
Now for the big one. Youll have to rememberreading this in a comic strip, not a history book.
But it is a wise saying none-the-less. For $64.00:
_________What character wisely said, We have
met the enemy, and he is us!
How did you do? Whether you did well or not, we
encourage you to visit the library and brush up on
some of these things. Who knows, you might get on
a quiz program that pays better than a measly $64!
