bob retires now

Shutting up shop for Easter

Photo and story by Celeste Lodewyk

“Retiring is just going from a paid job to an unpaid job,” jokes Blenheim New World liquor manager Bob Tapp who yesterday retired.

Supermarket staff, owners Mark Elkington and Andrea Boock and customers fondly farewelled Bob as he hung up his uniform for the last time.

“It’s going to be a shock when he’s not here and there will be far less debates,” Mark laughs.

“But we will all definitely miss Bob,” he says.

Bob’s working career began in his teens and after his father passed away he took over the family butchery business at age 17.

He went on to marry wife Sue and start a family before selling the business in 1982.

“Our girls were practically brought up under the counter,” he jokes.

Bob then headed out to the vineyards for a short stint before taking up the butchery manager position at Redwood-town SuperValue.

Leaving there he went to work at Blenheim City SuperValue and when that closed he joined the team at Mc-Cabes Meat Centre.

After 18 months he then joined the team at Blenheim New World in 2003 taking up the position of Liquor Man-ager.

Looking forward to retirement, Bob says his decision was partly due to a

close friend who passed away December last year.

“He retired at 70-years and after three weeks he died.

“It really makes you think and really it’s time for me to move on,” he says.

With plenty of spare time on his hands now,

Bob says he will first be focusing on the work he is doing in the Blenheim Musical Theatre comedy Spamalot, then packing up a camper-van and touring the South Island with his wife.

“I have always been controlled by a clock so I am looking forward to winding down,” he says.

No more early starts for retiree

FOND FAREWELL: Blenheim New World long standing employee Bob Tapp retired yesterday and is getting set to soon hit the open road for a campervan holiday.

office closed

Story by Annabelle LatzMost shops will close their

doors for Friday and Sunday. Picton Fresh Choice will be

open on Friday however, in line with a ‘Picton Overall Exemp-tion’ from the Department of Labour, dating back to 1988.

Owner Casy Smits said he tried to get rights with the Department to open on Sunday, but legal issues need to be sorted further, and he hopes it can happen next year.

“There are lots of tourists in

Picton during Easter, so we should be open just for the service we provide.”

If a cruise ship comes in on an Easter Sunday his shop can open, but that is not happening this year.

He can open Good Friday, because it is classed as a statu-tory holiday.

“The restriction is that we can’t sell alcohol, but most kiwis are pretty organised with stuff like that and will buy it today or on Saturday.”

Although he would like to be open for business on Easter Sunday, he is looking forward to a relaxing day off, the last late summer break before winter sets in.

“People in Picton then hi-bernate for the six months of winter!” he said.

Blenheim New World will be closed Friday and on Easter Sunday.

Owner of Blenheim New World, Mark Elkington, said he is looking forward to the two days’ holiday.

“It will be nice to spend the time with the family,” he said.

He said opening last year on Easter Sunday was to do with servicing a public need.

“With 30,000 people in Blenheim last year, for Anzac Day and the Classic Fighters Air Show, there was a need to open.”

“We were complying with the law.”

If shop owners are unsure of whether or not to open, they can call 0800 20 90 20 .

The Blenheim Sun newspaper office will be closed Easter Friday and Easter Monday. The office will ro-open Tuesday

8.30am. Wednesday Sun will be printed as normal. Happy Easter.

Blenheim triplets Ben, Jack and Stella Clark will be celebrating Easter and their first birthday together this Sunday.

Parents Angela and Jason Clark say despite initally planning a small family affair, extended family and friends will be coming from all over the country to attend.

“It’s a great weekend being Easter to have everyone together and a celebration for us making it through the first year,” Angela laughs.

On Monday the family will be hosting a second celebration with friends including two other sets of Marlborough triplets.

A celebration of an owner’s love for their Jaguar will be showcased this weekend as 160 cars run their national rally here in Blenheim.

This will be the first time the 11th National Jaguar Rally is held in Blenheim with members travelling from all over the country.

Chairman of the rally, Blenheim business owner John Gray says the weekend’s programme looks particularly exciting, with displays being held in Blenheim, Havelock and Picton.

“We have cars ranging from the 1930’s to modern models and

there will be around 330 people attending, so for Blenheim’s first time hosting it looks set for a really great weekend,” he says.

The rally kicks off today with a meet and greet at the Clubs of Marlborough between 3pm and 6pm followed by a function for rally members.

On Saturday the rally will head to Havelock where they will be displayed at the Domain from 10am to 11am.

From there they will travel through to Picton where they will stop near the Picton Emergency Operations Centre from 1pm to 2:30pm.

Sunday will see their main display set up at the A&P Park

show grounds from 8:45am to 10:45am during the Farmers Market.

The public is encouraged to go along to each of the rally’s displays.

Friday – Greet and meet at Clubs of Marlborough between 3pm and 6pm.

The Blenheim Sun will publish twice weekly

starting on Friday March 9.

Publishers Les and Katrina Whiteside see this

as an exciting time, to provide Marlborough

readers with a second edition as well as the

popular Wednesday paper.

Advertising support has continued to grow for

the Blenheim Sun over the last 12 months and

the demand from advertisers for a Friday paper

has been the driving force to go twice weekly.

Les says the encouragement and support from

major advertisers is just fantastic, particularly

in this economic climate.

However he believes the Marlborough public/

readers who have continued to support the Sun

paper is the main reason why it is so successful

for advertisers.

“We believe this move also shows our confi-

dence in the region,” says Les.

Last week the ABC Audit Bureau of NZ re-

leased its yearly newspaper circulation numbers.

“The Sun is now the number one circulated

newspaper in the region with 18701 copies,

this compared to the Marlborough Express

8077 ANC”

“The Express suffered another sizable de-

crease in circulation, similar to last year,” says

Les.“The new Friday Sun edition will be similar to

Wednesday, but with a few surprises,” he says.

aBOVe; One of the hi-lights of Wednesday nights 75th anniversary celebrations was the lowering of the ensign after the Beating of the Retreat.

By Annabelle LatzGraffiti is a time consuming, costly, and annoying habit of trou-blemakers around Marlborough. The Council’s Reserves and Amenities officer Nic Crous said graffiti instances go up and down like a yo yo.He said there are stages of the year where occurrences are more common, for example near the end of school holidays when youths get bored, or when a new group comes

into an area. But he said compared to other towns, it is not too bad here.“Blenheim is not a town to have ongoing graffiti, so we don’t get this continual frustration.”But Nic still takes a no acceptance policy towards the annoying habit.“We have a policy to try and remove it within a 24 hour period.”The Council now uses anti-graffiti paint on areas that are targeted, such as public toilets and parks.

Pictured here are the public toilets on Queen St, which were attacked with spray paint early yesterday morning. Nic said nearly all the walls have been repainted with the anti-graffiti paint, and this particular wall will be painted now too.“It costs a little bit more, but is a whole lot easier to remove the paint because it washes off.”He said improving the look and upkeep of public places helps to

reduce the amount of graffiti. “It seems to deter the vandal.”Nic said police work hard to identify the perpetrators and deal with individuals appropriately. He said passing the costs of paint removal onto the offender, handing out community service sentences, requiring offenders to clean up their own damage, and court appearances, are all methods of dealing with the issue.

Graffiti has to goLester Rainey cleans up the graffiti on the Queens st toilets on Thursday.

There were 300 guests, including eighty local dignitaries, who were guests at the Royal NZ Airforce at Woodbourne on Wednesday night.

It was an evening to celebrate 75 years of providing safe and effective military air operations to New Zealand.

The evening ended with The Beating of the Retreat, performed by young Air

Force members. As part of this celebration, The Red

Checkers formation flying squadron will fly over Blenheim at 1pm on Easter Monday.

A busy calendar of events for the first quarter of 2012 marked their 75th an-niversary and culminating on Anzac Day celebrations on Wednesday April 25.

The Marlborough District Council has confirmed it will lodge a submis-sion in opposition to the application from New Zealand King Salmon Ltd for private plan changes to enable the company to expand its operations in the Marlborough Sounds.

A Board of Inquiry has been established by the Minister of Con-servation to hear the submissions.

The timeframe for public submis-sions is 20 working days from today’s date.

Council environment committee chairman Peter Jerram says the Council will prepare a submis-sion because the application by King Salmon seeks to change the Marlborough District Council’s own Plan and it is entirely appropriate the Council lodge a submission to address the planning implications.

“The decision made by the Board of Inquiry will effectively set a precedent for future activities within the Sounds; therefore the Council has a direct interest in the debate about what is, or is not, appropriate.”

Moving to Blenheim felt like “coming home” for Christchurch couple Nicole and Geoff Pybus.

They arrived four years ago to take on their first business venture, Cafe Home on Main Street.

“With my family here in Blenheim it really gave us a sense that this is where we belonged, the inspi-ration behind the cafe’s name,” Nicole says.

Last month marked the couple’s fourth successful year in business, some-thing they attribute to the support of their customers

and family.“It’s important to us that

our family is involved with the business and this I think gives the cafe special meaning, something our customers really enjoy,” she says.

Nicole’s sister Jessikah and sister-in-law Steph-anie have been with the business since the begin-ning.

And on public holidays the whole family goes in to make it a “family day”.

“Our daughter Ever is also a popular feature at the cafe, customers love it when she comes in for a visit,” laughs Nicole.

Prior to taking over the lease the premises was home to the CPR cafe, a regular stop for Nicole and Geoff.

“Every time we visited Blenheim this was our favourite cafe to come to, so when the opportunity arose to open our own café here we jumped at the chance,” she says.

Long standing staff members Sarah, Jessikah, Stephanie, Jessica and Laura are familiar faces at the café which is currently open Monday to Saturday.

After Easter Cafe Home will be extending its hours to open Sunday as well.

company, has moved from Queen St, to Summit Real Estate on Alfred St.

“I’m working for them, I’m going to be over seeing their property management, as well as selling commercial property.”

Stuart said it takes away the responsibility of running his own company, and he was looking forward to doing more selling on the ground.

“It’s all good, it’s excellent, otherwise I wouldn’t have done it.”

He said house market seems to be improving.“House sales have gone up, although prices have stayed

the same.”Stuart said this could be because people have sat on the

same property for quite a while now, and realised they have to make another move at some stage.

“As long as people buy and sell within the same market they will be ok.”

Ben Breeze now knows the sensation of

grass between his toes, and used to think

that sausage rolls were just hilarious.

The four year-old arrived in Blenheim a

year ago with his mum, dad and sister, after

their home city 60km from Tokyo was left

in ruins after the earthquake on March 12,

2011. His parents Katrina and Kent were born

in the South Island, but Kent’s work had

taken them to Japan, although Ben was born

in Singapore and moved to Japan shortly

afterwards.His 14 month-old sister Isabella was born

in Japan. They joined their grandmother Lorraine

Milmine here in Blenheim, and Kent’s

mother who lives in Christchurch is Japa-

nese. The Breeze family had an apartment on

the top floor of a 16-storey building at To-

kyo’s International Airport in Narita, where

Kent was involved in the hotel business, the

day their lives changed.

Ben was having an afternoon nap, Katrina

was playing with Isabella, and Kent had just

come upstairs for an afternoon coffee.

“It was never unusual for there to be an

earthquake, we just got used to them, most

Japanese people don’t even blink they are

so common,” said Kent.

Has anyone else noticed the price of coffee around Blenheim? Is it just me or is this “treat” pricing itself off the menu? Some cafes need to look at this i reckon.

Dear Ed,Your front page story was great!

But it probably left a lot wondering about the much vaunted electricity reforms brought in by then National minister Max Bradford.

We the plebs, were promised greater efficiencies and lower power bills. Privatisation and the free market is a rort on consumers.

Since it was a National government what sayeth senior public servant

and prime minister John Key?What will he do about it?Can he reform again electricity to

bring it back to what it was, i.e. lower power bills?

Or doesn’t he care because his rich corporate power company buddies are making massive profits while also wrecking public rivers like Trustpower wants to do with the Wairau?

Dear Ed,I was amazed to read in last weeks’

Sun that the trial hospital shuttle bus run to Nelson is to finish after a 6 month trial.

I was even more amazed to hear that the Wairau hospital still of-ferred a mileage allowance for those patients who elected to take their own vehicles.

And why wouldn’t they if they can, as in most cases, make a profit on their petrol costs!

Surely, if one is to run a trial, then there should be no other service on offer than the one in question? Perhaps the hospital board would like to respond.

Very Confused!

Shuttle bus #@!&*

Dear Ed,I refer to the letters from Keri Herd

and Gaylene Le Bas in response to Phil Russ’s letter.

It was only last month that the body of Emma Campbell was discovered almost two years after her car crashed off the Port Hills in Christchurch.

Her body was found by a hunter in a deep scrub-covered ravine several hundred metres away from her car.

There can be many variables in accidents - whether it be disorienta-

tion of an accident victim due to darkness, concussion, or both.

In the case of the Ward accident, maybe the driver had driven another passenger (hitchhiker?) - possibly not common knowledge at the loca-tion he had just left from.

We should leave it up to the trained people to make the call as to which, and how many, Emergency Services are deployed.

Dear Ed, Your lists of popular babies names (4.04.12) made me

wonder, especially the names for baby girls. For instance, the meaning of Campbell (a Scottish sur-

name) is ‘twisted or crooked mouth’. Similarly Cameron translates from Gaelic as ‘ twisted or crooked nose’.

Another Scottish surname, McKenzie, has been given to lovely little baby girls. Its meaning is “son of Kenzie or Kenneth”.

Some of the surnames in the list are Blake, Harper, Reeve, Parker, Quinn, Sidney and Wylie.

Imagine what nicknames might be conjured up as the little girls grow.

By Celeste LodewykGet your dancing shoes on as

the Saint Marys Youth Group gears up for its much anticipated ‘Garden of Eden’ dance on May 19.

The dance is the Youth Group’s fundraising initiative to raise funds for its camps, events and general running of the group throughout the coming year.

There are two Youth Groups, the junior and senior which get together once a week and partici-pate in a wide range of activities; this will be what the money goes towards.

Tickets are selling fast but there is still time to grab some early

bird specials at $15 per ticket if purchased before May 1.

After this date tickets cost $20 each, and although there will be door sales on the night dance organisers insist for ca-tering reasons that tickets be pre-purchased.

Dancing kicks off at 7:30pm and finishes at midnight and for the protection of the hall’s floors, no thin heels are allowed.

“All ages are welcome to attend and people are encouraged to dress up to the dance’s theme ‘Garden of Eden’.

“For a great night out and loads of fun, we would love to see you there,” says Mieke Hilhorst.

Gardening Tips

It’s that time.....Planting nowIf you are wise you’ll be thinking of planting trees and shrubs now as the soil is a perfect temperature for growth.Dig holes and mix some compost through the soil. Plant your favourite deciduous trees and shrubs from now until winter arrives.Make sure the soil is nice and moist once plants are in and water every few days if necessary.

Plan annuals and biennials for summerApril is a good month to sow the seeds of poppies, stock and forget-me-nots.These hardy annuals will bring plenty of colour.

Time to plant spring-flowering bulbsGrowing bulbs in pots is easy, just add pot-ting mix.Water well and place in light shade until they shoot. In the garden, add compost so roots burrow down and tops shoot up.

Story and photo by Stephanie ChoateAs the bright blossoms of summer gardens

begin to fade, the Bassetts want to help bring a blast of colour into Blenheim homes.

“We’re trying to promote people living with flowers,” said Melissa Bassett, who runs The Pot Shed with her husband, Andrew.

In Europe, she pointed out, people buy flowers as part of their weekly shop, not just for special occasions— a habit they’d like to encourage.

“Every week, people can brighten up their homes and bring the garden in,” she said.

Two long greenhouses are filled with vibrant gerberas in the brightest shades of red, orange, pink, yellow, and cream.

Though they also sell calla lilies and Christmas lilies, the gerberas are their mainstay, filling flo-rist shops throughout the south island year round.

“Gerberas brighten up a home and just make it a happier place,” Andrew said.

The fragrance-free blooms are also perfect for those with allergies or sensitivity to scent.

“We get a lot of positive feedback about our product, especially that our gerberas tend to last a long time, which is really satisfying,” he added.

Cut gerberas will stay vibrant in a vase with a bit of attention to the water.

Since gerberas are voracious drinkers, Andrew recommends keeping their water clean and bacteria free with a drop of bleach.

He also suggests cutting the stems regularly.

“One thing we hear so many times is that people think they are plastic, because they are so perfect,” Andrew said.

“I guess for us that’s the ultimate compliment,” Melissa added.

Between their three small chil-dren, thousands of flowers, and

rows of berries they sell at the farmers market, the Bassetts have their hands full.

“It’s a juggle,” Melissa said, hold-ing her squirming 6-month-old daughter Tahlia.

“It’s hands on all the time. I think that’s true with gardening in general,” Andrew said. “To keep a perfect garden you need to keep an eye on it all the time and keep tinkering.”

The Bassett’s gerberas are avail-able in Blenheim florist shops or can be hand-selected at their Rapaura Road shop.

LEFT: Colourful gerberas are Andrew and Melissa Bassett’s main source of income, but for 6-month-old Tahlia, they are just a tasty snack.

By Annabelle Latz Spot buyers will be paying

more for grapes during this harvest.

But a strong international market should counter this cost within the next year.

Louis Vavasour, wine maker at Awatere River Wine Company Ltd, has no doubt that he’ll be paying more for sauvignon blanc grapes this harvest, on the spot market.

Louis said spot prices are up, with growers fetching $1200-$1800/Tonne.

Last harvest the district average was closer to $1100/Tonne.

“The good thing here is that they are going up. I think this is positive, and needs to be spoken about.”

In the 2011 vintage he

saw over 300,000 tonnes of grapes harvested, but expects less in this time around, closer to the 200,000 tonne mark.

“Overall crops are down between 20% and 30%, and that’s pretty much across the board.”

Louis expects that within eight to 12 months they should start to see the effects of higher spots market prices combined with a decrease in supply.

“If the annual fruit harvest-ed from the 2012 vintage is down by 20-30%, then this will have flow on effect that will cause a shift in demand

in the global markets.”Awatere River exports

to six different countries, including the US, UK, and parts of Asia, and parts of Europe.

“Asia is definitely the rising star for export.”

He said less sunshine hours meant slower ripening lead-ing into vintage combined with a bad flowering, result-ing in a late start to harvest.

Louis said this did not nec-essarily mean a bad outcome for wine in Marlborough.

“It’s not a bad vintage at this stage, it will depend on how much rain we have just before actual harvesting.

It’s a matter of getting nice settled weather.”

He said at the moment quality is looking good, with a little bit of unevenness (hen & Chicken) in the bunches, but less disease pressure due to more air flow because of the looser bunches from the not so good flowering.

Historically, harvest has started on the first block around March 25, and this year harvest is about two to three weeks behind.

“You learn not to worry about the weather because it’s out of our control. It’s a matter of being well equipped to handle the situ-

ation.” Marcus Pickens, Gen-

eral Manager of Wine Marlborough Limited, said the spot market this year is smaller than last year, which Marcus said may be because contracts only last a certain length of time.

“But we have heard of con-tracts being re-offered again this year.”

He said this is a reflection on the strong international market, which is getting stronger every year.

New Zealand wines, partic-ularly sauvignon blanc, and increasingly pinot noir, are now reaching Asian shores.

Strong spot prices for grape growers

By Annabelle LatzFarming Angora goats was once

a popular option in Marlborough.Errol Batty described the 1980’s

as the ‘hay day.’ He and his late wife Jean began

farming Angora goats in the late 1970’s at their Rosedale Angoras property on Swamp Road, and stuck at it until the late 1990’s.

Earlier this week a cheque for $12,000 was handed over from the Marlborough Goat Industry Association to the already exist-ing Mohair Producers Associa-tion, an autonomous organisation that is administered by Federated Farmers.

It was part of a Federated Farm-

ers meeting, with an incorpora-tion of an AGM for Mohair NZ.

Marlborough’s Association closed this week after handing over its funds, a group no longer needed for the diminishing in-dustry.

Approaching his 85th birthday this month, Errol is happy with his 10 goats now.

“We would have had about 600 roughly back then,” he said.

Errol said the grape boom, and the economic crash of the 1980’s, were big factors for the end of the goat farming.

“There were only a handful of us left after that.”

Errol said he was saddened to

see goat farming drop. “People worked hard in those

early days, a lot of work went in by a large number of people.”

Gary Barnett, president of Fed-erated Farmers said there is still a place for the goat industry in Marlborough.

“It would be good to see it fostered,” he said.

He said Angora is a beautiful fibre.

“South Africa has Angora goats in the millions, and even they can’t satisfy the world market.”

Glynne and Jon Perano farmed Angora goat in the Waihopai Valley until 2003.

They still farm a small handful in Omaka Valley, but they had about 1800, widely using frozen embryos from South Africa.

“They are adorable, probably too intelligent for their own good. And they make excellent pets.”

“Goat meat is the wid-est eaten meat in the world, you don’t see it much on the menus here.”

For more information, phone Glynne, 572 52 88.

Angora ‘80’s hay day’Errol Batty was one of the pioneers of Angora goat farming in Marlborough, and is saddened to see it fade from the strong agricultural industry it once was.

The Methodist Church in Tua Marina is all set to move, but has nowhere to go.Built in 1875, it was a focal point of the community for many years. In 1934 a bigger church was built, so it moved to the back of the section, as a continual meeting point for events like Sunday School for many years. It is now no longer used, so the deci-sion was made to move it to Brayshaw Heritage Park in Blenheim. It would be as a gift from the Method-ist Church of New Zealand to the Marlborough Historical Society. But plans have been halted, due to dif-ferences in opinion of where it should go at the park.Dale Webb is president of the Marlborough Historical Society, and said everyone with interests in the church was happy for that proposed site, which had been approved with the Brayshaw Heritage Park Administra-tors Group. It was to be placed between the museum and the caretakers cottage, by the path that leads to the railway

station.“But on Tuesday this approval was rescinded,” said Dale. “The new suggestion was to put it down by the riverbed, and it would be the first building there, and who knows what would happen in the future.”He guessed that the new proposed site was something to do with the drafted development plans for the south end of the park.Dale said there is a strong support network behind moving the church to the desired site at the park, and expects further mediation to take place after Easter.“There’s always an alternative, but it would be nice to have a church at the park.”Errol Morrison, whose great grandfa-ther John Botham was involved in the church when it was first built, said the work had been done and the church is ready to be moved. “The foundations have been discon-nected, the wires have been cut.”He was looking forward to it moving to the park, where it could be used for weddings and other gatherings just like it was in Tua Marina for many

years.“It could live on for another 100 years or more, it would compliment the whole park area.”Before the church was built, big gatherings like weddings and funerals were held on his great grandfather’s property, John Botham, on Hunters Rd, Tua Marina, at the original family homestead. Basil Parkes described the man who built the church as a very loyal southern Scotsman. It was his great grandfather, David Boyes. “He built the roof steep like it would have been in Scotland.”The roof will be removed on moving day, when it goes through a paddock, takes the ‘back road’ from Tua Marina, and on into Blenheim.“We will just take it quietly.”Peter Tester, president of the Brayshaw Heritage Park Administrators Group, said he had no comment at this stage regarding where the church will go.

Church set to move?

Errol Morrison and Basil Parkes say the Methodist Church at Tua Marina is all set for the move. But the question still lies, where will it be going?

The traditional act of painting eggs is called Pysanka.

The custom of giving eggs at Easter time has been traced back to Egyptians, Persians, Gauls, Greeks and Romans, to whom the egg was a symbol of life.

Easter is now celebrated (in the words of the Book of Common Prayer) on the first Sunday after the full moon which happens on or after March 21, the Spring Equinox.

Nail biting win for driver

Story by Celeste LodewykAfter a nail bit ing f inal

round in Timaru on March 25, Blenheim born racing car driver Chris Hatton won his first ever OSCA Super Saloon Series championship.

The OSCA Super Saloons is one of the most exciting catego-ries of South Island motorsport and is open to most types of saloon car.

Racing his 700hp Camaro Transam Chris says has been battling to win the champion-

ship since joining the club in 2003.

“It was only speculation as to who won in the end, the points were so close,” Chris says.

“I found out that I had won the GT2 class which was a great feeling, but finding out I had won the overall championship was even better,” he laughs.

Now the series has ended Chris has turned his sights to the up and coming ITM Hamilton 400 V8 Supercars Championship ignites in Ham-

ilton from April 20-22.This will be the final one held

on the city’s street circuit.Chris competed last year

coming in a seventh overall in the GT1 class after battling tor-rential rain and zero visibility at times.

“I am hoping the weather will be better this time,” Chris jokes.

Chris will battle it out with 24 other GT1 drivers in the hope of claiming a podium finish.

Story by Celeste LodewykThe thought of sitting in a spa

pool filled with icy water might curl your toes, but according to the organisers of the 2012 Heart Stopper Challenge on May 19 it is a really fun way of supporting children living with a heart condi-tion and their families.

The event is a fundraiser for Blenheim@Heart, a local charity organisation dedicated to provid-ing support to those affected by heart conditions acquired during childhood.

One family who is appreciative of this support is Wairau Valley’s Webb family.

Vanessa and Andy Webb are

parents of two children with heart conditions.

Six-year-old Kaleb was born with a serious and rare congenital condition called Hypoplastic left heart syndrome diagnosed when Vanessa was 26 weeks pregnant with him.

This condition occurs when parts of the left side of the heart do not develop completely.

Kaleb underwent his first open heart surgery at 12 weeks, then again at three-years of age.

He has also recently returned from Starship in February where he had a hole closed.

“That was by far the worst experience as Kaleb was old

enough to know he might not wake up from surgery and he had trouble coming out of anesthesia and become unresponsive, it was really scary,” Vanessa says.

The couple’s youngest child 15 month old Jaidyn is also a heart child and was diagnosed recently with a rare syndrome.

She has an Atrial Septal Defect which is associated with Klippel-Feil Syndrome, something she was only diagnosed with two weeks ago.

“We have been told it was a freak occurrence to have two children with two rare condi-tions,” Vanessa says.

The Webb’s are among many

Marlborough families who will be actively promoting and participating in the Heart Stopper Challenge.

“Andy has a team, I’m in the Heart Mum’s team and our eldest son Con-nor has rallied his friends and cousins for the event.

“We really hope people will support this event and get involved, the work Blenheim@Heart does is invalu-

able to families such as ourselves,” Vanessa says.

Register your team of four to six people to take the plunge into an icy pool for five minutes. There is no entry fee but each team member is encouraged to pledge to raise $100.
