    CreativeFamily Funby Donna Erickson

Have Fun Creating Baby & Me Book

Whats one of the rst things you do after your baby isborn? I mean, after checking to see what sex it is. You lookfor the rst smile, dont you? You hold the baby up to themirror, and you point and coo and tweet, trying to get himto laugh. Of course, it takes some time, but soon it happens. The baby smiles! Lifes rst giggles. From then on, familylife is lled with keeping a watch for these milestones.

But the older sibling in the family is growing, too.Why not write a simple book about it? Whats the same?Whats different? Your preschooler or primary-schoolchild will gain a better sense of accomplishments and ap-preciate the baby steps we take as we learn and grow.First, have a mini interview with the older sibling to talkabout his skills. Can he count to 10? Does he sleep in aregular bed? Can he hop? Jot down what he has to say,

then put on your publishing hat.On the top of a sheet of con-

struction paper, use markers orprint on your computer a linesuch as MY BABY SISTER ...Finish the sentence with a factnoted earlier by your older child, such as My baby sister crawls. At the bottom of the page, printin large letters a correspondingfact about the older sibling: Ican jump and skip!

Other possibilities:My baby sister has one tooth. I have lots of teeth. My baby sister eats rice cereal and mashed bananas. I

eat hamburgers. My baby sister uses a bottle. I use a cup.End on a page where you note something the two kids

have in common, such as My baby sister smiles. I smiletoo, or My baby brother likes his blankie. I like myblankie too!

Illustrate the cover and write a title, such as BABYASHTON AND ME. Decorate the cover and pages withphotos and drawings or glue pictures from magazines.Punch two holes along the left side of each sheet andweave a ribbon through, nishing it off with a knot or bow.

Now youve added a new book to your family li-brary! It makes for ne reading you can share time andagain together.

Donna Ericksons award-winning series Donnas Dayis airing on public television nationwide. To nd more of hercreative family recipes and activities, visit www.donnasday.comand link to the NEW Donnas Day Facebook fan page. Her lat-est book is Donna Ericksons Fabulous Funstuff for Families.

To Your Good Healthby Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

    Diverticulosis Common With Age

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Will you write about diver-ticulosis? I was twice hospitalized for it and had to staythere 12 days in all. When I left, they didnt give me anydiet or medicines. I saw my primary doctor later, whodidnt think I had diverticulosis because they didnt domuch for me. Some tell me that you dont have to stay ona diet or take medicine. Is that so? N.F.

ANSWER: A diverticulum is a tiny pouch formedby the colon lining that has been pushed through themuscular colon wall. Its size varies from 0.2 to 0.4inches (5 to 10 mm) in diameter, about the size of asmall pea. Diverticulosis indicates that the colon hassprouted many diverticula. Its most often silent. Closeto one-third of adults at 60 years of age have it. By age80, two-thirds have it.

Diverticulosis is found in countries where grains are

rened. Rened grains have lost their outer coat, thebran. Bran was, at one time, the principal source of ber.Fiber keeps stool soft and easily pushed through thedigestive tract. With too little ber, the colon has to exertgreat force to move undigested food along. That force isresponsible for pushing the colon lining through the colonwall to form a diverticulum on its outer surface.

When you were hospitalized, you had diverticulitis inammation of diverticulum. The neck of diverticulabecame clogged with bacteria and pieces of hard stool. The diverticula swelled. For mild symptoms, people can

be treated at home by going on a liquid diet and tak-ing antibiotics. For moresevere involvement, peopleare hospitalized and fedintravenously and givenintravenous antibiotics.

Now that your diver-ticulitis has calmed down, the only diet you needfollow is one with plentyof ber 30 to 35 gramsa day. Fruits, vegetablesand whole grains are bersources. Many cereals arelled with ber: Fiber One,All-Bran, Shredded Wheat

and cooked oatmeal are examples. You do not have totake any medicines.

The booklet on diverticulosis covers this topic in de-tail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue No. 502W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. En-close a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6Canada with the recipients printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I will turn 65 shortly. Myhealth is just ne. I am out and active. I do odd jobs like

construction and hauling. Some friends want me to see adoctor just for a physical because I havent been to one in35 years. Why should I? All is OK with me. Is it true that80 percent of men dont go to doctors? C.F.

ANSWER: Youre getting on in years. Bad things hap-pen with aging. You dont want to be surprised by a heartattack, a stroke or a cancer that has grown so big that itcant be treated, do you? Those are some of the reasonsyou should see a doctor. I like your ghting spirit. I dont

believe that 80 percent of men never see a doctor.

Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer indi-vidual letters, but he will incorporate them in his columnwhenever possible. Readers may write him or request anorder form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

    Detecting Alzheimers in Earliest Stage

Researchers are moving ahead in their quest for a treat-ment for Alzheimers disease. For the rst time since 1984,theyve come out with a new set of guidelines. It used to be that there was no diagnosis of Alzheimers un-til the patient experienced complete dementia. Two yearsago, researchers from around the world came together topool all their information and to rethink how theyve ap- proached the care of those with Alzheimers, as well aslearn new ways to diagnose it sooner.

From those efforts, researchers have been able toidentify three specic stages of the disease: preclinical(brain changes that can show up as much as 10 yearsin advance), mild cognitive impairment (some mentaldeclines that the patient and others can notice) and Al-zheimers dementia. Mild cognitive impairment doesntalways become Alzheimers.

The new guidelines allow for a diagnosis much earlier, before there are even symptoms, when treatment mightstill be effective. The earlier diagnoses can make use ofphysical changes (biomarkers) seen in brain scans, spinaluids and blood proteins.

This doesnt mean theyve found a cure for Alzheimers, but it does mean that researchers can use the new informa-
