DURHAM, NC -- Dive safety improvements evolve through many paths. This year the winner of the 2010 DAN/Rolex Diver of the Year Award is Gene Hobbs of Duke University Medical Center.

Hobbs is being rewarded for his work with the Rubicon Foundation in creating the

largest single repository of diving and hyperbaric medical literature available online. He has been with the Duke Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Environmental Physiology, in the Department of Anesthesiology, for 15 years. During his career, he has worked on numerous projects that simulate underwater pressures to benefit others in the diving world.

He has written or co-authored 20 articles and abstracts that relate to findings that make diving safer for everyone. He also works in the Duke Human Simulation and Patient Safety Center where he helped create the simulation-based teamwork and communication training for the Duke hyperbaric fellowship.

Hobbs will receive his well-deserved award at this year’s Beneath the Sea scuba and dive travel show in Secaucus, N.J. Like previous winners, Gene will receive a plaque and a specially engraved Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner Date dive watch in honor of his achievements.

Among his other accomplishments, Hobbs is a founding member of the Rubicon Foundation, which supports the interdependent dynamics among research, exploration, science and education. Funding has come from several sources, including the Office of Naval Research. The Rubicon Foundation projects make it easy for recreational divers, aviators, and researchers worldwide to find the answers to questions on diving medicine, aerospace physiology, and space medicine, as well as historical information.

He has also participated in fundraising for a different type of organization in the memory of his son Andrew Weston Hobbs, who was born with Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH), a condition as common as spina bifida and cystic fibrosis, but with only a 50 percent survival rate.
