Summertime has arrived and we have anamazing programme to celebrate the arrival of long hot sunny days.
This has been a year of change for the SEAC with the building and restoration of our newcourtyard area. The term ‘partnership’ is oftenused whenever arts capital projects are beingdeveloped and this was indeed a truepartnership between Fingal County Council and The SEAC. We now have a new outdoorperformance area, which will double ouraudience capacity and establish a new space forthe cafe. Thanks to the funding, design skills andvision of Fingal County Council officials from theArts & Architecture departments, we now haveGairdín an Phíobaire, The Piper’s Garden, whichwe will officially launch in late June.
As for events, well we have the brilliant Kíla, The 4 Of Us and Liam Ó Maonlaí’s new projectRé, all performing outdoors, as well as a Pipers’Session and other fun packed arts activities forthose blue sky days. Other highlights includeFreddie White, Mick Flannery and the wonderfulJulie Fowlis.
The SEAC aims to bring you the very best oftraditional music from across the globe and withcontinued support from the Arts Council, we aredelighted to announce the piping sensations thatare Ireland’s Jarlath Henderson and Scotland’sRoss Ainslie performing here in May. We alsohave BBC Radio 2 Folk Singer of the Year, BellaHardy with her only Irish gig of the year and thestunning voice of Sarah McQuaid performing atour annual Séamus Ennis Tribute event. We aredelighted to welcome the return of the superbLúnasa to the SEAC stage in June.
Finally I would like to welcome our firstinternational Art Exhibition with three ofScotland’s finest landscape photographers, PhilMcMenemy, Morag Paterson and Ted Leeming, all showcasing their mesmerising work based onthe theme of water, which I believe is plentiful intheir part of the world.
So come along and enjoy the SEAC’s summer of‘Fun in the Sun’ (fingers crossed for the sun!).

Rachel Ries
Rachel Ries crafts sly and compassionate songs forthe crooked hearted. With an electric guitar, clearvoice and steady hand, she pulls the listener into herworld of city grit, country dirt, and her open-eyedsearch for redemption and reason. Her songs arefine-tuned delicacy with a snarl and disarmingcandor and, while South Dakota will always behome, Rachel is now splitting her time between ruralVermont and Brooklyn. Proudly carrying the torch ofher love for the domestic arts, Rachel’s homemadepreserves and hand stitched notebooks can often befound at shows, nestled amid the 180-gram vinyl,CDs and t-shirts.
Rachel is currently promoting Ghost of a Gardener, her first record in five years, which Uncut magazinecalls a "Gorgeous gush of warm-blooded harmonies"and Maverick UK states is a "Technicolor treasure inword and melody."

Pierce Turner
“Easily one of the most important Irish rock artists ofthe last twenty years” - The Irish Times
Whether as a singer or songwriter or performer,Pierce Turner has a penchant for the unexpected andthe unorthodox, re-writing the rules for all threeendeavours. Sometimes he performs from behind histrusty keyboard backed by a solo instrument (sax, maybe, or violin or trombone!). Or he can be outfront-of-house clambering over tables and orderingdrinks from the bar. In the middle of a song! Hisalbums too are equally mercurial, showing influencesranging from his Catholic Irish upbringing to thedecadence of Lou Reed's New York, merging theupfront rock of The Byrds, The Beach Boys and TheWho to deft touches of Irish trad, folk, jazz, techno, classical and choral harmonies. Don't miss a rarechance to experience this exiled Irish performer withhis stunning songbook and his legendary stagepresence.
“He has created what I confidently believe to be thefinest body of work in contemporary Irish music, barnone.” - Liam Fay, The Sunday Times

Bella Hardy
Bella Hardy, BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Singer of theYear 2014, tours her eagerly anticipated new album‘With The Dawn’; a heartfelt collection of self-composed songs which tell a story of travel, ofchoices, of lessons unlearned, and also of hope. Oneof the most creative, prolific and original singers inthe UK, her captivating voice inhabits her music andspins her narratives with an equal balance ofstrength and sensitivity. Bella writes: "With TheDawn is the musical record of the busiest and mostcomplicated time of my life. I was always on tour;alone, with different bands; I travelled across theAtlantic for the first time, with one trip to Canadaand another to America; I won the folk singer award,I turned 30, I was single, I was exhausted, I wasjubilant. I was constantly questioning. I try to makesense of the world through writing, but I haven't putthat writing out in such a direct manner before." The‘With The Dawn’ Band compliment Bella's breath-taking vocals and narrative fiddle with a powerfuland evocative mix of banjo, piano, electronics anddrums. With roots firmly within the folk tradition, songs written straight from the heart, and bold stepsinto a new world of sound and expression, this is aperformance not to be missed.

Ross Ainslie & JarlathHenderson Trio
Individually they’re two of the best players aroundbut collectively they create a chemistry that is almostmagic and have fast become one of the most talkedabout combinations on the circuit. They are not onlyvastly talented but have created a sound that isbursting with emotion and energy - a fusion of pipesand flutes which pushes the boundaries of what theinstruments can achieve in a performance which is avibrant mix of new and original compositions alongwith traditional tunes. Two of the most major talentsin contemporary Celtic piping, Scotland’s RossAinslie and Tyrone-born Jarlath Henderson first metback in 2003 at the William Kennedy Piping Festivalin Armagh. After taking their time to hone andperfect their unique partnership of Scottish bagpipesand Irish uilleann pipes, each also playing a variety ofwhistles, the pair exploded onto the scene with2009’s stunning debut album, 'Partners in Crime'.With last year’s album ‘Air-Fix’ a critical success, they are back on the road joined by the wonderfullytalented Ali Hutton on guitar, doing what they do best.

Jordie Lane
“Displaying the soulful tenderness of Ron Sexsmithand Ray LaMontagne… Lane’s gentle finger pickingand intimate vocals lend a sombre grace that isuniversal” – Rolling Stone Magazine
Born to a comedian and a clown, Jordie Lane spenthis early years in his parents travelling circus. Manyyears later, not much has changed, with Lanerenowned for both his relentless international touringschedule, and his witty, comedic storytelling. Lane’smusic seems like it comes from another place andtime. The songs are nostalgic and immediatelyaffecting, his rhythmic guitar playing is authentic andraw, and the rich resonance of his voice is simplyotherworldly. It is a voice that has taken Lane aroundthe world, performing major festivals in the US,Canada, UK and Australia, and touring with the likesof Billy Bragg, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Old CrowMedicine Show, Neko Case, Cat Power, Ruthie Fosterand The Moody Blues.

Man On Bridge
This wonderful new Irish documentary tells theextraordinary story of legendary Dublin streetphotographer Arthur Fields. Having spent fifty yearsfrom the 1930s to the 1980s taking photographs onO’Connell Bridge, Arthur left a lasting impression onthe lives of many Irish families and indeed on the fabricof the city itself. But what was the story behind theman and what impact did his obsession with workhave on his own family? Arthur took hundreds ofthousands of photos throughout his career but nonegatives survive. The goal of the Man On Bridgeproject is to gather these photos from personalcollections and create an alternative photographicarchive of Dublin city, one that reveals how we lived, how the city and its people changed over fifty years.Add your photo to the Man on Bridge archive online atwww.manonbridge.ie

Launch of Exhibitionby Stephen Nolan
*All welcome, but please RSVP by [email protected] or call 01-8020898*
Stephen Nolan is a Wexford born painter living andworking in Gorey, Co. Wexford. His paintings arecolourful statements on modern Irish culture and thephysical world he inhabits. Using a mix of consideredgeometric forms contrasting with bold expressivebrushwork he achieves an offbeat dynamism in hiscompositions, while accenting the paintings with littleislands of fine detail, he likes to create pieces thatlend themselves to thought and contemplation. Hispaintings are created on a modest scale, created onstretched canvas pulled taut over wooden panels. Inthis way he achieves an overall aesthetic that subtlymoves the meaning away from the image into thedomain of the Art object and the ‘handmade’. Whilesimultaneously use of strong colour means that whengrouped together these paintings create a joyfullycolourful gallery environment filled with multiplepoints of interest that creates a fascinating visualexperience for the viewer. Loaded with humour thepaintings are witty remarks on Ireland and what itmeans to be Irish, all set in an interesting display ofbeautiful Objet d’art for the gallery visitor to spendtime with and reflect on at their leisure.
At the launch, Stephen will talk about his paintingsand practice and will also bring along his sketchbooksfor viewing and discussion.
Stephen Nolan’s work will be exhibited in our EasterSnow Gallery during June and July.

The SEAC presents a new series of intimateconversations conducted by the novelist and poet,Dermot Bolger, with leading Irish writers who will readfrom their work and discuss the life experiences, whichhave helped to shape their outlook and their books.
Peter Sheridan one of Ireland’s best-known writers,co-founded the Project Arts Centre with his brother, film director, Jim Sheridan. An acclaimed theatredirector, he has also published three acclaimedmemoirs including Break A Leg, in which Sheridan’saccount of his life in the theatre is gutsy and fresh, provoking and deeply entertaining. In this in-depthconversation with Dermot Bolger, Sheridan talksabout his early life and childhood and delves into thewider culture and politics of Ireland over the past halfcentury, during which time he has seen the theatre asboth a medium for entertainment but also a vehicle ofsocial change. This promises to be a fascinatingaccount insight in one man’s journey through life.
Dermot Bolger is one of Ireland’s best knownwriters. His ten novels include The Journey Home, The Family on Paradise Pier and, most recently The Fallof Ireland. His first play, The Lament for Arthur Cleary, received the Samuel Beckett Award; his acclaimedBallymun Trilogy of plays has been staged in severalcountries and his works translated into numerouslanguages. Bolger writes for most of Ireland’s leadingnewspapers and in 2012 was named Commentator of the Year at the Irish Newspaper awards.

Phil, Morag and Ted are Scotland’s finest landscapeand abstract photographers who have exhibitedaround Europe with great success. This photographicexhibition has been inspired by Water. It exhibits theculmination of their explorations into the SouthwestScottish heartland and a personal study of the life-giving force. Water has long been an inspiration forart across many different disciplines spanning thecenturies. What better subject than one thattransforms endlessly and provides a mirror for lightand landscape. The sounds and atmosphere aroundwater are also associated with emotional responses inhumans; the crash of a stormy sea, gently lappingwaves, the constant babbling of a burn. Ted, Moragand Phil set out on journeys through their locallandscape to investigate these qualities and to try tocapture the many forms water can take. They did thisby carefully selecting sections of watercourses toattempt to depict its force, power, form and structure. The resulting images demonstrate both common anddisparate interactions with water in their ownindividual graphic styles.
