In theory
tent in portraying one of theworld’s most brilliant minds,the atoms in his brain strug-gling to burst like a supernovatrapped in a black hole of abody that refused to move. Thisstory also wouldn’t sell withoutthe chemistry with co-starWilde. A genial, handsome film.
However, the brilliance stopsthere.
The entirety of the film is an
MMK episode, clichéd story-telling that goes a>b>c. It’s atad more literal than A BeautifulMind, that Best Picture moviethat nobody remembers. If youlike your MMK episodes, enjoy.
But what’s great here, re-gardless of the film, is Hawk-ing’s ever-optimistic quest forthe scientific Theory that ex-plains Everything, and the lovestory that goes with it.

If you stay focused enough,you’ll be able to guess wherethis movie about con-men (andwomen) is going. Suave crimecomedy Focus is Will Smith’s tryto re-legitimize his former A-Listing after not getting an Os-car nod for Seven Pounds andthe box office dud After Earth.
If this movie earns re-spectively, Smith’s ca-reer is back on track.
In Focus, Smithplays con ringleaderNicky, who operates asmall company ofcon-artists who swin-dle and snatch wal-lets, watches and air-port luggage from un-suspecting strangers.Beauteous MargotRobbie plays the new-bie Jess, who quicklylearns the trade fromNicky. However, inthe middle of a bigcon job, Jess steps inand throws the metic-ulous plan into disor-der.
This is one ofthose glossy, crisply-photographed, full-color crime caperswith sophisticatedmusic in the back-ground and expensivecostumes for the ac-tors. Very Ocean’sEleven, if it had beenfunnier and more funto watch. But it’s notterrible—Smith andRobbie are a funmatch to watch andthe setups and sur-prises are amusingenough. Not earth-shattering news, butokay.
