Good NewsTHE GIFT OF GOD'S WORD

On this day of gifts and gift-giving,it seems appropriate that we take amoment to reflect on the great gift ofGod's Word. Because it is creative,God's Word always points to its au-thor, always calls us to respond. Be-cause it is powerful, God's Word can

link the sublime with the ridiculous, the transcendent with the immanent, the divine with the human. Becauseit is graceful, God's Word establishesa relationship of deep intimacy be-tween us and God.

At the heart of God's Word lies atantalizing tension between the mys-terious and the mundane. In our li-turgical celebration, this unresolvedtension both reveals the meaning of

life for us and calls us to respond, toact upon that meaning.Once accepted and opened, the

gift of God's Word is a gift thatkeeps on giving and keeps on callingus to give in return. It dares us to belike the gift-giver and to become giftsfor others, not only at Christmas, butat every moment of life.

nineteenth century Charles Dick-ens' story A Christmas Carol re-vived Christmas with a family em-phasis, not a religious one. In oneof today's readings, Saint Paul getsto the heart of this day: "When thekindness and generous love of Godour savior appeared, not because

of any righteous deeds we haddone but because of his mercy, hesaved us through the bath of re-birth and renewal by the HolySpirit, whom he richly poured outon us through Jesus Christ oursavior, so we might be justified byhis grace and become heirs in hopeof eternal life" (Titus 3:4-7). Nowthat is cause for celebration!

LIVING STEWARDSHIP NOWChristmas in the Church's calen-dar is a season that starts onChristmas Day and continues untilthe Baptism of the Lord on thefirst Sunday after January 6. Tryextending your celebrationthrough that time, with small giftsand good deeds of your choosing.

    Treasures From OurTradition

An old joke asks, "What time isMidnight Mass?" The answer isnot really obvious, since Christ-mas is unique in having severaldistinct celebrations. The readings

and prayers vary greatly from hourto hour. The Vigil Mass hinges onthe family heritage of Jesus and hisorigins. The concept of "midnight"predates clock time, and really hasto do with a celebration in thehours of darkness. Years ago, itwas not possible to receive Com-munion without fasting for a fullday, so the late hour of this Massmade it possible for the people to

receive. The first Mass after sun-rise, the Mass at Dawn, was onceknown as "The Shepherds' Mass,"and later Masses set aside storiesof Jesus' birth to focus on the keyto the day's celebration: John theEvangelist's majestic theology ofChrist's identity as the Wordmade flesh, dwelling among us.One feast, four separate Masses.Only monasteries manage the

whole round. Parishioners typi-cally take just one entry point intothe mystery. Yet there is much tosavor and celebrate in the comingof Christ into the world. Christ-mas is not a day, but a season. Youstill have two weeks to send thoseChristmas cards before you're offi-cially late!--James Field
