    LAS POSADASLas Posadas is a traditional Mexicanfestival which takes place from De-cember 16 to 24 . It commemoratesthe search for shelter by Mary andJoseph with a series of prayers andsongs. In Spanish, Las Posadasmeans The Inns, and during thisfestival, people form a processionwhich symbolically visit homes askingfor shelter. People in the processiondress up, sing songs, and sometimes

    bring a burro or donkey along to rep-resent the donkey which broughtMary into Jerusalem. One home inparticular is designated as the inn each night, and when the processionreaches that home, the hosts wel-come them in for a Posadas partywhich includes music, dancing, food,and prayer. Join us at St. Marys Church on Cherry& Bethel every night this week at 7:00pm and prepare for the coming Christ-mas Season experiencing the LasPosadas with your parish friends &

    family. Worship aidsare available in Eng-lish and Spanish. TheLas Posadas on Christ-mas Eve, December24, will begin at 8:15pm.

    Mary's prayerful nature led to aneven more disturbing message. Shewould conceive and bear a Sonthough she was not yet married."How can this come about?" Marywondered. "The Holy Spirit will comeupon you," she was told (Luke

    1:35).Mary's acceptance of this difficult

    challenge ushered in this, the finalage of God's reign. What was once asecret known only by chosen peoplelike King David and his descendantsmust now be made clear to all sothat, as Saint Paul wrote to the Ro-mans, we can be brought to the"obedience of faith" "according to thecommand of the eternalGod" (Romans 16:26).

    QUESTIONS FOR THE WEEKAdults: What can I do this week to growcloser in my relationship with God?Children:What can I do this week to show mylove for God?

    +++++++EL DIOS ETERNO

    El rey David deseaba que el Arcade Dios tuviera un hogar ms perma-nente. David podra haberse imagina-do algo as como el palacio de cedrodonde resida. Dios tena en mentealgo ms: un trono donde los descen-dientes de David gobernaran parasiempre, un reino donde judos ygentiles seran bien recibidos porigual.

    La actitud devota de Mara llev aun mensaje an ms inquietante.Concebira y dara a luz un hijo a pe-sar de que an no estaba casada.

    "Cmo podr ser esto?", preguntMara. "El Espritu Santo descendersobre ti", le contest el ngel (Lucas1:35).

    La aceptacin de Mara de estedifcil desafo marc el comienzo deesta, la era final del Reino de Dios. Loque antes era un secreto conocidosolo por el pueblo elegido como elRey David y sus descendientes ahoradebe quedar claro a todos para que,como escribi San Pablo a los roma-nos, podamos llegar a la "obedienciade la fe", "en cumplimiento del desig-

    nio eterno de Dios" (Romanos16:26).

    +++++++YES, LORD!

    God chose to announce the prom-ised Savior to a young woman in abackwater village called Nazareth. Ina small painting created over a thou-sand years ago, the artist shows the

    angel holding up one hand in greet-ing. Mary is standing facing him withher hands extended in welcome. Thewords of the angel are rich in power

    and promise: "youhave found favorwith God . . . [yourchild] will be calledSon of the MostHigh . . . The HolySpirit will come

    upon you, and the power of the MostHigh will overshadow you" (Luke1:30, 32, 35). Pure of heart andtrusting completely, Mary answeredGod with a wholehearted "yes."Through her cooperation, God brokeinto our world, breathing the sameair we breathe, experiencing our sor-rows and joys. God became flesh inthe Son, Jesus Christ, born of Mary.The world would never be the same.The time is here to let him into ourhearts and change us completely.

    LIVING STEWARDSHIP NOWWhat can you do for a God who hasalready loved you so much? Giveyour heart to God, and be preparedlike Mary to take some risks.

    S, SEOR!Dios escogi

    anunciar al Salva-dor prometido auna jovencita de unpueblo insignifican-te de nombre Na-zaret. En una pe-

    quea pintura de hace ms de milaos el artista muestra al ngel conuna mano en alto en seal de saludo.Mara est de pie frente al ngel consus manos extendidas demostrandoacogida. Las palabras del ngel sonricas en poder y promesa: "Has halla-do gracia ante Dios . . . [tu hijo] serllamado Hijo del Altsimo . . . reinarsobre la casa de Jacob por los siglos ysu reinado no tendr fin . . . El Espri-tu Santo descender sobre ti y el po-der del Altsimo te cubrir" (Lucas1:30, 32, 33, 35). Pura de corazn ycon una confianza total, Mara le diosu "s" sin reservas a Dios. Por la co-operacin de ella Dios irrumpi ennuestro mundo, respirando el aireque nosotros respiramos, y experi-mentando nuestros sufrimientos yalegras. Dios se hizo carne en el HijoJesucristo que naci de Mara. Elmundo no volver a ser el mismo otravez. Ha llegado el momento de per-mitirle la entrada a nuestro corazn alSeor Jess y dejar que nos cambiepor completo.

    LA CO-RESPONSABILIDADVIVIDA AHORAQu puedes hacer por Dios que ya teha amado tanto? Entrgale tu corazna Dios y preprate, igual que Mara, atomar algunos riesgos.

    ++++++++++++TREASURES FROMOUR TRADITION

    We are approaching the darkest,longest night of the year. For centu-

    ries, people in the Northern Hemi-sphere have kindled fires against thedying of the light, turning away thedark of the winter solstice, and lead-ing the imagination to hope and newbeginnings. It is thus easy to under-stand why these solstice celebrationsof non-Christian Europe attractedthe annual remembrance of the birthof Jesus Christ, the Light of theWorld.

    In time the solstice migratedaway from December 25, but theChristmas feast remained in place.

    From this day, a whole season of celebration developed, stretchingfrom Advent through the days of Christmas, and even beyond to theFebruary 2 blessing of the candles,and beyond that to March 25, theAnnunciation, nine months beforethe next Christmas. Centuries ago,this was New Year's Day, and manyreasoned that it was the date of Adam and Eve's fall, and the date of the Crucifixion. The message isclear: don't let your Christmas beover too soon. Keep the lights blaz-

    ing into January, and savor themeaning of the feast!

    TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FEDe las muchas tradiciones lati-

    noamericanas para celebrar el Ad-viento y la Navidad, las Posadas pa-recen ser lo mejor conocido enEE.UU. Tienen su origen en la ltimamitad del siglo XVIII cuando las es-trepitosas Misas de Aguinaldo deja-

    ron de ser celebra-das en Mxico. Pararemplazar la festivi-dad de esas Misas,los laicos decidieroncelebrar en sus ca-sas tomando lo quehaban visto drama-tizado en los templos, esto es, elrecorrido de Jos y Mara mientrasbuscaban posada en Beln. Como las"Antfonas de la O" de la liturgia ofi-cial cristiana, estas Posadas llegarona ser celebradas nueve noches con-secutivas.

    200 aos despus, muchos lati-nos continan celebrando las Posa-das en EE.UU. Recuerdo como denio cantbamos "En el nombre delcielo" recorriendo las calles del ba-rrio hasta llegar a la casa donde nosabriran con cantos, tamales, galleti-tas y chocolate. Ese recorrido deJos y Mara lamentablemente siguetodos los das en los pasos temero-sos y cansados de tantos inmigran-tes en este pas. Como la SagradaFamilia, otras familias latinoamerica-nas continan buscando hospedajecon la esperanza de dar a luz unanueva vida para sus hijos e hijas.
