    JOHN THE BAPTISTAt a school open house a woman

    could be overheard introducing herhusband to some of the other par-ents. "Oh, Bill, I'd like you to meetJohnny's father. And over here, this

    is Marie's mom; you know, the littlegirl from our Ellen's soccer team."

    With satisfied resignation Bill in-troduced himself not by name: "I'mEllen's Dad."

    It's good to know who you are.Be it someone's father or mother, son or daughter, husband or wife,it's important to embrace the fullmeaning of our various roles.

    John the Baptist knows who heis. And who he is not. He is not theChrist. Nor Elijah. Nor like any otherprophet God's people had ever seen.

    John the Baptist knows his mis-sion is divine. He's more than satis-fied to be the one to announce thecoming of God's reign. The Christ isnear. Make straight your paths.

    ++++++++++++TREASURES FROMOUR TRADITION

    Today there is an abrupt shift inthe season of Advent. From here onthe tone is more joyful and expec-tant and the tug of the Christmasmessage is irresistible. At daily Masstomorrow we begin to unfold thestory of Jesus' birth. Who can resistthe beauty of the first reading today--deserts aflame with flowers, arthrit-ics set to dancing, the tone-deafsinging hymns? So we don't miss thechange, the parish may take rose-colored vestments out of mothballs,we may light rose-colored candles onthe wreath, or fill in our wreaths withdesert flowers, pink seashells, seedpods, cones and berries. The seedsof God's kingdom have been sown inus. In these shining days of Adventthey are sprouting in many ways. How do we bring the promise tolight? This is the week to preparegifts for the poor. It is the week toinvite a lonely neighbor to yourChristmas dinner, the week to writea note forgiving a lost friend, theweek to shatter a family grudge sothat even in the desert places ofyour heart, Christ's life may blos-som.

    OUR LADY OFGUADALUPEDecember 12,MondayThe Blessed VirginMary, by her title,Our Lady of Guada-

    lupe, is the Patron-ess of Mexico and the Americas. OnDecember 9, 1531, Our Lady ap-peared to Saint Juan Diego, an In-dian Christian, whom she sent to thebishop with the request to build aChurch in her honor on the hillwhere she appeared. The bishopasked Juan Diego for a sign to provethat the Virgin had appeared to him.Our Lady appeared to Juan Diegoagain on December 12 and promisedthat his uncle would be healed. Shedirected Juan Diego to gather a bou-

    quet of roses that miraculously ap-peared on a bushnearby (roses do notbloom at this time ofthe year) to presentto the bishop. JuanDiego gathered theroses in his tilma(cloak). When heopened his tilma be-fore the bishop, theroses fell to the floor, and the bishop was

    amazed to see the miraculous image

    of the Mother of God imprinted onthe cloak. The image persuaded thebishop to believe what Juan Diegohad told him, and the Church wasbuilt.

    This image, which almost immedi-ately inspired the conversion toChristianity of many thousands ofIndians, may still be seen in the Ca-thedral in Mexico City. Many believethat the fact that the image remainsintact on a coarse fabric woven of acactus-like plant that ordinarily de-

    teriorates within a few years is fur-ther indication of the miraculous na-ture of the image. The symbolic sig-nificance of the image include Mary'scomplexion, which is similar to thatof the Indians who were native tothe region, her pregnancy, the goldstars adorning her blue mantle rep-resenting the heavens, the purpletassels of her sash signifying roy-alty.

    LAS POSADASLas Posadas is a traditional Mexicanfestival which takes place from De-cember 16 to 24. It commemo-

    rates the search for shelter by Maryand Joseph with a series of prayersand songs. In some parts of Mexico,Las Posadas is a major holiday, withthe whole community taking part.Mexican immigrants in other parts ofthe world may also celebrate LasPosadas, if the immigrant commu-nity is large enough, and participa-tion isn't restricted to Mexicans;other people in the community arecertainly welcome to participate.

    In Spanish, Las Posadas means The

    Inns, and during this festival, peo-ple form a procession which symboli-cally visits homes asking for shelter.People in the procession dress up,sing songs, and sometimes bring aburro or donkey along to representthe donkey which brought Mary intoJerusalem. One home in particular isdesignated as the inn each night, and when the procession reachesthat home, the hosts welcome them
