OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST THEKING - November 20, 2011THE SHEPHERD KING

The job of shepherd and the jobof king couldn't be more differentfrom each other. Shepherds are onthe lowest rung of society, kings areat the top. But God says, through theprophet Ezekiel, that the Messiah willlead in a way very different from

earthly authorities who lord it overtheir people and cause harm withtheir poor leadership.

Our King takes on the job himself.Christ, like a shepherd, will give rest, seek out the lost, bring back thestrayed and scattered ones. He willheal the wounded and bind up theinjured. He does not delegate, butwill "shepherd them rightly." Wehave a king who cares for us and whois not afraid to "judge between onesheep and another" (Ezekiel 34:17).

STEWARDSHIP:A KING LIKE NO OTHER

We have not elected God aspresident. There are no referendumson God's will, and no chance of recallvotes. God as King seems strange inour democratic, individualistic soci-ety. Jesus experienced oppressiverulers--think of Herod and PontiusPilate--but he connected his kingly

status to humble service, and in-structed his followers to be servants. He humbled himself, became hu-man, suffered, and died for us. TheLord of glory hung on a cross of shame to free us from the bondageof sin and death. He is Lord, King, and Judge, but his justice is intendedto lead to our repentance and ulti-mate salvation. We believe "he willcome again in glory to judge the liv-ing and the dead, and his kingdomwill have no end." The scriptures saythat God delays Christ's return so we

all have time to repent. Christ ourKing offers us true freedom as thebeloved children of God.

LIVING STEWARDSHIP NOWA Prayer to Christ the King from

the liturgy:Almighty and merciful God, youbreak the power of evil and make allthings new in your Son Jesus Christ, the King of the universe. May all inheaven and earth acclaim your gloryand never cease to praise you. Weask this through our Lord JesusChrist, your Son, who lives andreigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.(The Roman Missal, Opening Prayerfor Our Lord Jesus Christ the King)

CO-RESPONSABILIDAD:UN REY INIGUALABLE

No hemos elegido a Dios comopresidente.

Jesucristo. (Misal Romano, OraciónColecta para Nuestro Señor Jesucris-to, Rey del Universo)

FIESTA DE LA FELa misa no termina

--Miguel Arias

Revised Roman Missal/Nuevo Misal Romano Sunday, November 20, 2011—Solemnity of Our Lord JesusChrist the King

This Sunday, the final Sunday of ourLiturgical Year, will be the final Sun-day during which we will use the

present Sacramentary . The Sacra-mentary has served the Church formany years. Let us show our respectand reverence of how it has servedus in our Liturgical Celebrations. Inour recessional today, we carry it outin procession as we thank God andthe Church, for the gift that it hasbeen in serving us for many years.

Next Sunday, November 27, the FirstSunday of Advent, we will begin us-ing the New Roman Missal. It will becarried in the Entrance and will be

blessed at the beginning of Mass.

The Revised TranslationAlthough the essence of the Massnever changes dramatically, begin-ning the First Sunday of Advent, wewill be using new responses andprayers. The Eucharist continues tobe God’s generous gift of Christ tous, our bread and wine becoming hisflesh and blood. Parishes throughoutthe English-speaking world havebeen preparing for this transition, and our parish is no exception.

The Sacramentary we have been us-ing dates to 1973, so we have usedit for a long time. It helped us tomove from the Latin Mass (beforethe Second Vatican Council) to Massin vernacular languages (after theSecond Vatican Council). The revisedtranslation, approved by the HolySee, has many biblical allusions thatwill be richer for those who know theconnections. Some passages willmore closely parallel the originalLatin.

An Example of the Revised TextsOne difference that recurs severaltimes is the people’s response to

“The Lord be with you” (Dominusvobiscum in Latin) Now we will an-swer, “And with your spirit” (Et cum spiritu tuo in Latin ).This changemore carefully mirrors passagesfrom scripture (see, for example,Judges 6:12; Ruth 2:4; 2 Chronicles

15:2; and Luke 1:28). It also corre-sponds to the response in someother languages. It’s not the casualexchange that starts with “Hi,” or

“How are you doing?” Instead, itcalls forth the deepest identity of priest and people, beginning a sa-

cred action unlike anything else wedo. Our language is elevated be-cause our activity is: it expresses afaith handed down over centuries.Only ritual words are calibrated to fitsuch dignified circumstances.

Faith Formation SessionsMost people who know a change iscoming like to prepare for it. Antici-pating a birthday party, we buy thegift. Expecting rain, we bring thelaundry in off the line. Soon, we’ll behearing the revised English texts at

our liturgies. Let’s educate ourselvesso we not only know our responses, but also understand why we’re say-ing them. We want to unite our faithcommunity so that we can raise onevoice, confidently, together. Manyparishioners and parents of our FaithFormation Families (Pre-Sacrament,First Eucharist, Pre-Confirmation,Confirmation and Ongoing Faith For-mation) have attended the sessionsgiven these past nine weeks. Theirchildren have also been prepared byour catechists during their regular

Faith Formation classes. Each mem-ber of our community is important—to God and to each other. No oneshould feel confused or distant whenthe family gathers at the table. If you have not been able to attendany of these sessions, you still havetime to prepare yourself by studyingthe handouts from these sessions.Pick them up today and share themwith others. A Work of Art in Itself The Roman Missal, Third Edition, that we have purchased for our par-ish through the generous donation of friends and parishioners, is a work of art in itself. The publisher, Magnifi-cat , aims at

reviving thegreat traditionof illustratedliturgicalbooks. Thespirit of thisancient tradi-tion was tohonor theglory of Godthrough theartistic beautyof the bookitself. Every

aspect of thisbook was conceived with a view of creating a work of art.

Praying in BeautyPope Benedict XVI often refers tothis tradition in the Church by sayingthat the liturgy is inherently linked tobeauty. He explains more particu-larly that our liturgies will radiatewith reverence as the celebrantspray before the face of God’sbeauty: «Beauty is not mere decora-tion, but rather an essential

element of the liturgical action, sinceit is an attribute of God himself andhis revelation.»

May this coming Thanksgiving Daybe an occasion to give thanks to Godfor his overflowing generosity to us,especially for giving us this long-awaited liturgical renewal which wehope will be an opportunity for all of us to strengthen our community andrenew the faith that we hold dear.To participate fully in a Eucharistic

liturgy is an awesome responsibility.People in other times and placeshave longed for this privilege.Whether we’re attending a weddingMass, a funeral Mass, or a SundayMass, it forms the template for ourlives. Let us celebrate it joyfully, in-telligently, together.

Yours in Christ,Fr. Peter Quinto, RCJ
