    THE HOLY FATHERS OCTOBER2011 INTENTIONS

General Intention: For the termi-nally ill, that in their sufferings theymay be sustained by faith in Godand by the love of others.

Missionary Intention: That thecelebration of World Mission Sundaymay increase in the People of Godthe passion for evangelization andthe support of missionary activitythrough prayer and economic aid forthe poorest Churches.

    30TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMEOctober 23, 2011

LIVING JUSTLY"You give that back right now!"How many of us have heard that line, probably more than once, as we weregrowing up? We come home with thetrophy of what we thought was areally sweet deal, only to have our

parents undo our profits by makingus return the spoils. They had a dif-ferent idea of what constituted a "fairtrade agreement." Justice in ourdealings with others continues to bean important measure of our charac-ter, and like a good parent, God ca-res very much about how we treateach other and about how otherstreat us. God hears the cry of thepoor, and answers the call of the op-pressed. God's beloved children arenot to behave like bullies.

STEWARDSHIP: WHOLEHEARTEDJesus insists that all religious rules, the witness of prophets and saints, and every aspect of faith rests en-

tirely on wholehearted love of God,and loving others as ourselves. Awoman named Carla could not sleepone night. Restless, she opened herBible and came upon these twogreatest commandments. She real-ized, guiltily, how many things dis-placed God in her life. She hid behindbaggy clothes and believed herselfnot good enough. Carla's parents hademphasized sin and a harshly judg-

PRAYER FOR VOCATIONSLord Jesus Christ, shepherd of souls, who called the apostles to be fishersof men, raise up new apostles inyour church.Teach them that to serve you is toreign, to possess you is to possessall things.Kindle in the young hearts of oursons and daughters the fire of zealof souls.

Make them eager to spread yourkingdom upon earth.Keep our present reli-gious and seminarianshealthy, both physicallyand spiritually. Grantthem courage to followyou, who are the Way,the Truth and the Life, who lives and reigns for-ever and ever. Amen.

mental God. Carla saw that the com-mandment was to love God, loveneighbor, love self. The commonthread was love, not sin, unworthi-ness, or judgment. Next morningCarla read the words again. Jesussaid "love your neighbor as your-self." Carla equated self-love withselfish pride. She had to understandlove in a new way. So began a new

path for Carla. She prayed gratefullyevery day for God's love and bless-ings. Step by step, she changed.

LIVING STEWARDSHIP NOWCarla found an experienced spiritualdirector in her area to help her. Tofind a priest or qualified lay director, ask at the parish, a nearby religiousretreat center, a seminary, or thediocesan offices.

Poco a poco ella fuecambiando.

Revised Roman MissalWORKSHOP: Session #5Our fifth session on the Mass willexplore the Liturgy of the Eucha-rist. This part of the Mass includesthe Presentation and the Preparationof the Gifts (when bread and wineare brought to the altar) and theEucharistic Prayer, which contains a

dialogue, thanksgiving, the story ofthe Last Supper, Jesus words ofconsecration, and our acclamation offaith. The gifts of bread and wine broughtforth in procession represent us; sodoes the money weve earned andhave contributed to the church. Theoffering brings together Gods crea-tion and the work of human hands. We can never understand the Eucha-ristic Prayer fully or appreciate itcompletely, but we try. Our sessionmakes connections with meals at

home and with Christs offering tothe Father. He gave his friends hisflesh and blood the night before hedied so that theyd be able to under-stand what he would do on Calvary:sacrifice himself as the ultimatecovenant between God and human-ity. This memorial makes his savinggrace present for people today. Thewords may change, but the coremeaning never will.Come join us!
