WORKSHOP: SESSION 4Our fourth session on the Mass fo-cuses on the Profession of Faith,

our shared statement of what we allhold dear. We begin with the changefrom We believe to I believe.Well briefly survey the history of theNicene Creed, and the difficulty ofcompiling many beliefs into onestatement. We come together from avariety of different backgrounds, yetwe profess a unified belief with oth-ers. Our shared identity transcendsthe forces that divide us. Think of itas many pieces in a large mosaic or

distinct trees that form a forest.Well review the revised translationof the Creed. If words like

consubstantial and incarnateseem strange, the session will helpyou learn and understand the mean-ing of these words, and to say themwith other people. The words areunusualwe dont use them anyother way. But they describe JesusChrist, unique and unusual. Well

discuss personal beliefs, and how itfeels to connect at spiritual depthwith people throughout time, throughout the world. Come join us!(Open to all parishioners, lectors, extraordinary ministers of holycommunion, choir members, ush-ers, parish groups, parents ofFaith Formation, First Commun-

    ion, Pre-Confirmation & Confir-mation students)

    29TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMEOctober 16, 2011

IN GOD ALONEIsaiah speaks to us today of

Cyrus, King of Persia, anointed by theLord. God calls Cyrus by name andleads him in service to the Israelites. In this passage we hear that it is theLord who gives Cyrus his title, who

arms him against his enemies, andwho opens doors and unbars gatesbefore him. And God does all of thisso that the people will know that "Iam the LORD," and that "there isnone besides me" (Isaiah 45:6).

Paul opens his letter with essen-tially the same notion--that in Godalone we find our grace and peace.Paul also gives thanks to God on ourbehalf, calling to mind our work offaith, hope, and love. And in the fa-miliar Gospel reading, Jesus tells thePharisees to give to Caesar what is

Caesar's and to God what is God's.

do ante l.

PRAYER FOR VOCATIONSLord Jesus Christ, shepherd of souls, who called the apostles to be fishersof men, raise up new apostles inyour church.Teach them that to serve you is toreign, to possess you is to possessall things.Kindle in the young hearts of oursons and daughters the fire of zealof souls.

Make them eager to spread yourkingdom upon earth.Keep our present reli-gious and seminarianshealthy, both physicallyand spiritually. Grantthem courage to followyou, who are the Way,the Truth and the Life, who lives and reigns for-ever and ever. Amen.

MISSIONSTATEMENTAs faithful disciples of Christ,we, the Catholic Communityof St. Mary & St. Katherine, proclaim our three-fold mission:to worship God, to share our faith, and to serve those who are in need.

STEWARDSHIP:THE ROAD TAKENWeek after week, we are offered achoice to declare to others and to ourGod whom we belong to--the small

god of money and possessions, or thegreat God whom Jesus called Abba(Daddy or Papa in Aramaic). Some ofus drop into the basket what we thinkis good enough, or what we will nevermiss, or whatever is in our pocket. How about a different approach? Forevery financial blessing first givethanks, whether for a paycheck, anallowance, investment interest, bonus,or even a lottery win. Choose a portionand share it with others: half to theChurch, and half to good cause youfavor. In gratitude for God's over-

whelming love, we give these "firstfruits" rather than what's left over af-ter we've done what we want. Modernresearch shows that people who givegenerously tend to live happier andlonger lives. So become a gratefulgiver and a true steward of God's con-stant blessings.

LIVING STEWARDSHIP NOWDid you know that the Vatican has ayearly operating budget less thanhalf the budget of a major univer-sity? God's work--in the parish, the

diocese, and around the world--depends on us. Is your giving gener-ous, or the least you can spare?

GOD'S GOODNESS Let us throwourselves into the ocean of God'sgoodness, where every failing will becancelled and anxiety turned intolove. --St. Paul of the Cross
