THE FIRST AND BEST DISCIPLEThe title Mother of God honors

Mary's motherhood. She nurturedthe Savior, believed in him, and fol-lowed him to the foot of the cross.Scriptural details about Mary arefew, but enough to show us hercharacter. She was a risk taker. Shetrusted in God no matter the out-

come (Luke 1:18). She was protec-tive. When her baby's life wasthreatened by Herod she went toEgypt (Matthew 2:13-15). She wasa prayerful (Luke 2:19). She waspersistent. She searched for threedays when the boy Jesus was lostin Jerusalem (Luke 2:43-46). Shewas joyful. Her song of praise toGod (Luke 1:46-55) shows a richspirituality. She was courageous.

She stood by Jesus through his ago-nizing death (John 19:25). At thewedding at Cana (John 2:1-11),when the wine had run out, Jesussaid to fill the jars with water.Mary said to the waiters, "Dowhatever he tells you." Isn't thisthe heart of discipleship? Shouldn'twe follow her example?

LIVING STEWARDSHIP NOWThe motherhood of Mary is so im-portant that it sometimes eclipsesher role as Christ’s first disciple. All of us, men and women, can fol-low her example as disciples. Makea short list of ways you can be likeher in the year ahead toward fam-ily, neighbor, church, and commu-nity.

Prayer for the New YearO God of new beginningsand wonderful surprises, thank you for the giftof a new year.May it be a time of grace for me,a time to grow in faith and love,

a time to renew my commitmentto following Your Son, Jesus.May it be a year of blessing for me,a time to cherish my familyand friends, a time to renew myefforts at work, a time to embracemy faith more fully.Walk with me, please, in every dayand every hour of this new year, that the light of Christmight shine through me,in spite of my weaknessesand failings.Above all, may I rememberthis year that I am a pilgrimon the sacred path to You.Amen.

Amen.

Treasures From OurTradition

On this feast, we can see howdevotion to Mary has been a bea-con of hope to the sick throughouthistory. In the new cathedral of Los Angeles, the faithful enterthrough a single door topped by astriking sculpture of Mary witharms stretched down in compas-sion. Sculpted into the massivebronze doors are the titles of Marymost treasured by various cul-tures. Many of them speak of howthe sick are consoled by a sense of Mary's presence.

Dorothy Day once recalled St.Bonaventure's remark that afterthe Lord's long forty days of fast-ing in the desert, when he was di-minished and weak from his strug-gle, the angels who ministered tohim went first to the BlessedMother's house. There they sawthe soup that was on her stove,

and took some to the Lord so thathe would delight in it even moresince his mother had prepared it."Of course," said Dorothy Day mat-ter-of-factly.

In praying the rosary and savor-ing the stories of Mary's steadfastlove in the face of all suffering, thesick are strengthened by one of

Tradicionesde Nuestra Fe

--Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz,OFM
