GOD REVEALED TO THE NATIONSWhat wonderful images we have

today of the reign of God! Isaiahspeaks to us of a great feast--a heav-enly feast--a feast of abundance withrich foods and choice wines. It is theLord's own affair, Isaiah explains,

when God will unite all nations, dryevery tear, and destroy death for-ever. Then, too, will the entire earthrejoice in the Lord and bask in God'ssaving grace.

Jesus speaks of heaven in termsof a feast as well. Here, the kingdomof heaven is likened to a king's wed-ding feast given for his son. This is afeast of abundance also, with the fat-tened cattle prepared just so. Butmany of the people invited don'twant to come, so the king invitesanyone who would honor his son by

their presence there. And Paul tellsus that whether we live abundantlyor in humble circumstances, we cando all things in the Lord whostrengthens us.

Session #4The Profession of FaithWhen Catholics profess the Creed, orProfession of Faith, during Mass, thefirst change in the translation will beimmediately apparent. We havebeen beginning the Creed with the

words, “We believe . . . .” With thenew text, we will profess, “I be-lieve . . . .” Many may wonder whythis change has been made. In itsoriginal form, as approved by theEcumenical Council of Constantinoplein the year 381, the Nicene Creed(or Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed,to be precise) begins “We believe.” The Council Fathers were establish-ing a rule of faith, a criterion thathelps us interpret Sacred Scripturecorrectly and to preach and theolo-gize correctly; it was a bulwark

against many of the heresies of theday (Arianism, for example). It wasnot written to be recited during theMass. An abbreviated version of theCreed was, however, used for Bap-tisms. Before being plunged into thewater, the catechumen would bepresented the Creed in question andanswer form. The response to eachquestion was “I believe.”

There are two additional reasonsfor this change to the form of theCreed. First, every other major litur-gical language either already uses

the singular “I” or soon will. Thischange will unite English-speakingCatholics more closely to the rest of the Catholic world. Secondly, theLatin text of the Creed in The Roman

Missal uses Credo (“I believe”)rather than Credimus (“We believe”).

+++++Our current translation reads, “bythe power of the Holy Spirit he wasborn of the Virgin Mary, and becameman.” This will change to “and bythe Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became

man.” This simple change from “born” to “incarnate” is perhaps themost important amendment in thenew text of the Creed, because itmore accurately conveys the truth of the Incarnation – when the Son of God took flesh. The current wordingcan easily be interpreted to meanthat Christ did not actually becomeman until the moment He was born.Of course, the reality is that the Son

Ourouter wedding garment is to dresswith care and respect. Our inner gar-ment is to "put on Christ," clothingourselves in his love and goodness in
