28th Sunday in Ordinary Time,October 9The Lord invites us to a banquet (Mt22:1-14), one of the favorite imagesof messianic times (Is 25:6-10a).This banquet is spread before us (Ps23:1-6) and can fully satisfy ourneeds (Phil 4:12-14,19-20), yet howoften have we refused the Lordsinvitation to share in the riches pre-

    pared for us (Mt 22:1-14)?

THE GIFT OF THE REIGN OF GODMatthew's Gospel today expands

on Isaiah's ballad considerably. Acomparison with the same story inMark's Gospel clearly shows us thathere the author is busy teaching thiscommunity of Jewish Christians:"This is a story about Israel a longtime ago; this is also a story aboutJesus and the skeptical leaders."

Jesus as much as told these Jewishleaders that they were the tenantswho first stoned their own prophets. And he told the leaders they were thetenants who would soon even disposeof him--Jesus--and, in doing so,would forfeit their privileged place ofpresenting to the world the promisedMessiah.

"And this," says Matthew's Gospel,"is a story about you, the inheritorsof what was first offered to Israel."The reign of God was first opened toIsrael and is now given to the whole

world, but it must be received as agift. The first Christians are the newtenants in the vineyard. The deeperreality of the reign or kingdom of Godis that it is available to everyone onthe face of the earth--Israel included.EL REGALO DEL REINO DE DIOS

OURSIn recent times, politicians, corporateleaders, bankers, and others haveacted with outrageous greed and self-

ishness, and with devastating conse-quences. Has there ever been aworse time than this? The answer isyes: history reveals a procession ofdisasters, wars, and bloodthirsty ty-rants. But there is room for hope.Matthew was writing his Gospel forJewish Christians whose new faithseparated them from other Jews. Allwere living under oppressive Romanrule. The vineyard Matthew speaks ofis the world. God is the landownerwho created it and made it fruitful. The evil tenants in Matthew's com-

munity were those power-hungryJewish leaders who collaborated withRome and cooperated in killing God'sSon. Those who wreak havoc in God'sworld face justice in this life or thenext. Our task is to tend the vineyardwith deeds of charity and ethical andmoral behavior, and to welcome theforgotten and oppressed. Never loseheart, never give up; the Kingdom isours.

There will be no Parent Session/Adult Faith Formation class onthe Revised Roman Missal thisweek.

All priests will be at the PriestsRetreat in Three Rivers from Mondaythrough Thursday. Please rememberall those who will be attending this

retreat in your prayers this week. The parent/adult sessions will re-

sume next Sunday, October 9. LastWednesday, we had our third ses-sion (which will be repeated nextSunday) dealing with the Gloria andthe Liturgy of the Word. The Gloria isour response to Gods kindness, compassion, and mercy which wehave just celebrated in the Peniten-tial Act. The revised translation ofthis ancient hymn expresses moreliterally the sentiments of the Latinoriginal. While the previous transla-

tion had us singing Glory to God inthe highest, and peace to his peopleon earth, the revised text will haveus singing Glory to God in thehighest, and on earth peace topeople of good will. This is notonly faithful to the Latin original,Gloria in excelsis Deo, et in terrapax hominibus bonae voluntatis, but it better connects with Luke2:14. Those familiar with the Christ-mas story will hear in the openingline of the Gloria an echo of the an-gels announcing peace at the birth of

    Jesus.After the Introductory Rites, we

are now ready to encounter the Lordin the Liturgy of the Word. The peo-ples part during this point will haveno change at all, except for the re-sponse at the priests/deaconsgreeting before proclaiming the Gos-pel (And with your spirit as inthe Introductory Rites) and theCreed (which we shall tackle in thenext session).

LIVING STEWARDSHIP NOW"Great works do not always lie in ourway, but every moment we may dolittle ones excellently, that is, withgreat love." --Saint Francis de Sales(1567-1622), bishop, missionary, and patron saint of writers

    NEW ROMAN MISSAL+NUEVO MISAL ROMANO
