    26th Sunday in Ordinary TimeSeptember 25, 2011

First Reading -- When the wicked turn away from theirwickedness they have committed and do what is right, they shall surely live (Ezekiel 18:25-28).Psalm -- Remember your mercies, O Lord (Psalm 25).Second Reading -- Consider others as better than your-selves; look not to your own interests, but to the interestsof others (Philippians 2:1-11 [1-5]).Gospel -- Tax collectors and prostitutes are entering thekingdom of God ahead of you (Matthew 21:28-32).

FAMILIAR INSIGHTSSpiritual teachers tend to repeat themselves, and to repeat other teachers.

Maybe there really aren't that many different truths to tell. Just a lot of slow, sleepy human beings--like us--who need to hear the basics over and over. Con-sider today's readings. (continued on page 2)

63 Days Before Implementation of theRevised Roman Missal Third Edition

    on November 27, 2011

The Introductory RitesThe Sign of the Cross is marked on

our bodies to identify us as discipleswho were baptized into the TriuneGod: In the name of the Father, andof the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.Amen. Next, we acknowledge ourdependence on our gracious andmerciful God by asking our Lord tohave mercy, or in the Greek: Kyrie, eleison. During the season of Easter, there is the option of replacing thePenitential Act with the Rite of Bless-

ing and Sprinkling of Water on theassembly. In Baptism, Christ liber-ated us from sin and death in orderto be reborn into his life of grace, mercy, and love. Our only responseto Gods kindness, compassion, andmercy is by offering Glory to God inthe highest. This ancient hymn isbased on the song from the Gospelaccording to Luke that the angelssang to the shepherds that Jesus wasborn. This was their song of praise toGod who became flesh, became hu-man in the person of Jesus the

Christ. During Advent and Lent, theGloria is not sung. It returns onChristmas Eve and again during thePaschal Triduums Mass of the LordsSupper on Holy Thursday evening.

And with your spiritProbably the most noticeable

change for the laity in the revised

    translation ofThe Roman Missalwill

be the response to The Lord be with

you, which restores the phrase And

with your spirit in place of And also

with you. This change is specifically

    called for by Liturgiam authenticam,

    the instruction from the Congrega-

tion for Divine Worship and the Dis-

    cipline of the Sacraments regarding

the translation of liturgical texts. It

states that the Latin phrase, Et cum

spiritu tuo, must be translated as

literally as possible. English is the

    only major European language that

does not mention the spirit in the

current translation of this response;the Greek liturgy of the Eastern

    Churches also employs the equiva-

lent of And with your spirit. So the

new form has both tradition and

widespread use on its side. Underly-

ing the use are scriptural and theo-

    logical reasons.

    THE HOLY FATHERS SEPTEMBER2011 INTENTIONS

General Intention: For all teach-ers, that they may convey love intruth and educate in authentic moraland spiritual values.

Missionary Intention: That theChristian communities spreadthroughout the Asian continent mayproclaim the Gospel with fervor, bearing witness to beauty with the

    joy of the faith.

PRAYERSORACIONES+ Have been requested for theintentions of:+ Por las intenciones de:Maria Acosta, Joey Almeraz, Cora Alva-rado, Francisca Alvarado, Michelle Azpiraz,Dalvin Baker, Henry Banuelos, Jose Anto-nio Becerril, J. J. Benavides, Jose Calavera,Nathan Cantu, Ofelia Castellanos, Ramon

People complain God isn't "fair,"and Ezekiel answers that God is morethan fair. People choose their ownfates, and people can change. Evenevildoers can turn, do right, and live."Actions speak louder than words." Afresh new insight? Hardly.

Paul tells the Philippians that hewould truly be encouraged if thosewho claimed to be believers would, in

fact, look to others' interests and nottheir own. "The proof of the puddingis in the eating." A novel idea? I don'tthink so.

In Jesus' story of the farmer andhis sons, everyone knows that theone who said he wouldn't work--butdid--is way ahead of the one whosaid he would work--but didn't. "Talkis cheap." Heard that before?

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEKAdults:How can I identify the things that

keep me bound to an old way of liv-ing and cut off from Gods grace?Children:How can I let God know that I wantto do what he wants me to do?

May God bless you for your contin-ued support of our church.Que Dios les bendiga por su apoyogeneroso.

SECOND COLLECTIONSEGUNDA COLECTATodays second collection is for

    Church Maintenance Fund.

DO IT NOW!Anyone who has ever had to dealwith teenagers knows the foot-dragging that can go on over a sim-ple request to do something. "I'll doit in a minute!" Parents know thatadolescent "minutes" can be hours.Jesus tells of a father who asked hissons to work in his vineyard. Onesaid "Later" but did the work; theother said "Yes" but did not. Jesus isnot concerned with postponement,

but with how people respond to him.Jesus' disciples were often distractedand misunderstood him. And the so-called "good" Jews would not evenlisten to Jesus. The people "good"Jews shunned, such as tax collectorsand prostitutes, heard Jesus andgrasped a great truth: wholeheart-edly doing God's will trumps lawsand commandments, and offersfreedom and peace of heart. Are yougoing through the motions of being aChristian, not taking it to heart? What's dragging at your feet? Be-

    come a real disciple today.

LIVING STEWARDSHIP NOWThe best way to be a follower of Je-sus Christ is to be with other believ-ers. Strengthen your faith by joininga parish group that prays, studies orserves together. Look in the parishbulletin or handbook to find whatwould suit you best.

Amn.

    ENSEANZAS FAMILIARESLos maestros espirituales suelen

No locreo.
