    25th Sunday in Ordinary TimeSeptember 18, 2011

The ministry of the Word is a fundamental element of evangelization throughall its stages, because it involves the proclamation of Jesus Christ, the eternalWord of God.

The word of God nourishes both evangelizers and those who are being evan-gelized so that each one may continue to grow in his or her Christianlife (National Directory for Catechesis [NDC] [Washington, DC: United StatesConference of Catholic Bishops, 2005], no. 17).

ThemeToday the Church celebrates Catechetical Sunday fo-cusing on the themeDo This in Memory of Me.Thosewhom the community has designated to serve as cate-chists are called forth to be commissioned for their min-

istry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity toreflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue ofBaptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness tothe Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity forall to rededicate themselves to this mission as a com-munity of faith.

    PRAYER FOR CATECHISTS

O God, our Heavenly Father, you have given us the giftof these catechists to be heraldsof the Gospel to our parish family.

We lift them up to youin thanksgivingand intercede for themconcerning their hopes and needs.

May we be attentiveto the presence of your Wordin them,a Word that lifts up and affirms, calls forth and challenges,is compassionate and consoles.

We pray that our parish familywill always be blessedwith those who have responded

to the call to share in Christsprophetic mission as catechists.

May we too be opento the universal call to servicethat Christ addresses to allof his disciples, contributing our giftsto the communion of faith, the Church.

We ask this in Jesus name.Amen.

First Reading -- Turn to the LORD, whois generous in forgiving (Isaiah 55:6-9).Psalm -- The Lord is near to all who callupon him (Ps 145).Second Reading -- Live your lives in away worthy of the gospel of Christ(Philippians 1:20c-24, 27a).

Gospel -- The last will be first, and thefirst will be last (Matthew 20:1-16a).

DIRECTIONIsaiah tells us something that wealready know, and yet seem to for-get every now and then. He tells us,essentially, that God is God and weare not. When we're confused andtroubled and can't figure everythingout, it might be wise to recall Isaiahspeaking on the Lord's behalf andexplaining that God--who is on amuch more, well, Godly wavelengththan we are--moves in ways we

can't even imagine.Saint Paul, by comparison, has eve-rything figured out. Kind of. At leasthe understands his calling in life--tomagnify Christ in everything hedoes. That should give all of us thedirection we need. Jesus gives usdirection, too, explaining to us onceagain in the parable of the workersin the vineyard that the last will befirst, and the first, last.

MISSIONSTATEMENTAs faithful disciples of Christ, we,the Catholic Community of St. Mary& St. Katherine, proclaim our three-fold mission: to worship God, toshare our faith, and to serve thosewho are in need.

tice in the marketplaceare essential. In 1891,Pope Leo XIII issued Re-rum Novarum ("Of NewThings"). This ground-breaking document dis-cussed the relationships and dutiesof labor and capital, governmentsand citizens. It called for just wagesfor people to support families, and

the right of labor to unionize. Thepope rejected both communism andunrestricted capitalism, and affirmedthe right to private property. In theGospel, Jesus is not addressing theseissues, but God's relationship withpeople. God acts with justice: likethe laborers who worked all day, wereceive what God promised. God alsogives beyond simple justice, giving

GOD'S ECONOMYToday we hear about a landownerwho hired laborers to work in hisvineyard. The first hires agreed on aday's pay. When work ended themen were paid, the first hires receiv-ing the same as the late hires. Imag-ine the grumbling! Fairness and jus-

unexpectedly and lavishly. In God'seconomy we all get what we deserveand more than we ever bargainedfor.

    REVISED ROMAN MISSAL THIRD EDITION

What is the Roman Missal?Over the past several years, you

    have heard much through newspa-

    pers, blog postings, and Twitter

    about the revised translation ofThe

Roman Missal. You may be wonder-

ing, What is The Roman Missal, and

how does this translation affect us?

Take notice of the red book the

priest uses most often during Mass.

This book is called The Sacramen-

tary, which together with the Lec-

tionary for Mass make up The Ro-

man Missal. The Missal is the collec-

tion of prayers, chants, and instruc-tions (rubrics) used to celebrate

Mass. This includes prayers such as

the Sign of the Cross and opening

    greeting; Collects; Gloria; Creed;

    Eucharistic Prayers; Holy, Holy,

    Holy; Memorial Acclamations; and

the final blessing. The majority of

the prayers we recite or sing at

Mass are contained in this book and

it is these prayers that are currently

    being retranslated from the original

    Latin into English.

In the early Christian Church, manyof the Mass prayers were memo-

    rized and handed down orally.

    Scribes eventually collected the

prayers and recorded them in liber

    sacramentum (book of sacraments

    or sacramentaries). Other books

were used for the scripture read-

ings: Lectionaries and a Book of the

    Gospels (Evangeliary) for the scrip-

ture readings, and additional booksfor the chants and antiphons. Slight

    changes and additions developed as

    manuscripts were handed on and

    hand scribed. Eventually the chants,

    scripture readings, prayer texts,

    and instructions were compiled into

a single volume, the Missale Plenum

    (complete Missal). When Johannes

    Gutenberg invented the movable

printing press in 1470, this allowed

the Mass texts to become standard-

    ized and published universally. In

1474, the first Missale Romanum(Roman Missal) was printed in Latin

and the texts contained in this vol-

ume evolved over the five ensuing

    centuries.

Learn more by joining Fr. Peter at

St. Marys parish hall for a session

    on understanding the Revised Mass

    texts.
