Springcar care

As the season changes tospring it’s time to check the run-ning condition of your cars andtrucks. East Tennessee winterscan be tough on vehicles and thiswinter‘s cold temperatures havebeen significantly harsh.Maintenance program technologyfor maintaining vehicles andkeeping them in excellent run-ning condition has changed withthe times. Today highly sophisti-cated ignition and fuel systemsare the norm and onboard com-puters control critical functionsof the vehicle. General mainte-nance programs for newer vehi-cles have changed in recentyears. Barry Dickey, owner ofPRO TOY Automotive ServiceCenter, serving the Knoxville areasince September, 2001, recentlyadvised, “My approach regardingautomotive maintenance may bea little different than others. Myadvice is the first thing for theowner to do is check the vehicleowner’s manual for prescribedservices and scheduled mainte-nance. If vehicles aren’t properlymaintained there could be issuesand owners won’t be able to get tothe performance and dependabil-ity they are looking for.”Dickey advises that air filters beinspected and generally changed

every 20,000 to 30,000 milesdepending on the manufacturer’sspecifications and environmentalexposure. Cabin air filters willkeep pollen and other airbornedebris from heating and air con-ditioning systems while engineair filters protect the engineintake system. With the weatherchanging soon, all fluid levelsneed to be checked and changedif necessary. Belts, hoses andmounts should be checked forcracks or frays. “Tires should bechecked for proper inflation.Under inflated tires reduce fueleconomy and promote prematurewear and safety hazards,” saidDickey, suggesting owners followthe manufacturer’s recommenda-tion found on the driver’s doorjam. He said tires should be rotat-ed every 5,000 to 7,500 miles andbalanced when vibrations are feltat highway speeds. Pot holes areunfriendly to East Tennesseedrivers and shocks and strutsshould be inspected for wear andleaks. Dickey’s recommenda-tions coincide with the Car CareCouncil which has introduced the21st Century Tune-Up program. The Car Council advises thatinspections of systems need to bedone and should include: the bat-tery; engine mechanical; power-

train control including onboarddiagnostic checks; fuel, ignitionand emissions. “Vehicle own-ers should become familiar withtheir vehicles and the owner

manual so they are familiar withhow it should operate. In additionthey should know the manufac-turer’s recommendations formaintenance and work with a

reputable repair center,” empha-sized Dickey.

You’re traveling 70 mph on I-40, the road fresh-ly treated for the impending snow, a semi-truckahead is kicking up salt, sand and white sodiumchloride, sand-blasting the front of your car andwindshield. You grit your teeth as you imaginethe paint’s finish. Rather than snow, a hundredmillion rain drops fall from the sky poundingyour car, you smirk as you think of the weatherforecast.

Safely at your destination the sun emerges toevaporate the rain, it leaves behind the solidstrapped inside those rain drops; carbon from tailpipes, road film, tar, dirt, mud, sand, bug guts andbird poops are all left behind on the surface of

your car to fight the warming sun. Temperaturesrise, the deposits inside the rain drops bake on thepaint. Oxidization begins, the paint wants to hazeand it wants to dull. Slowly, imperceptibly, paintdamage occurs, the once shiny new car looks dif-ferent, older than before. The once slick paintsurface now squeaks under the touch of yourpalm, it feels different. It needs a wash and waxbut you’re too busy - simply no time in the sched-ule. Tomorrow morning’s dew ignites the oxida-tion process all over again.

Without wax the clear coat is left naked defend-ing the harmful UV rays.

If you don't particularly care how the car looks,

you can be lazy and never wax it - just keeping thecar washed will leave it looking reasonably cleanand shiny, but waxing it regularly will provideimmeasurable protection and enhance the shineand value of your investment. Not waxing itleaves the car vulnerable to accelerated wear anddepreciation.

Synthetic formulas in liquid hot waxes are nowbeing applied at 3 Minute Magic, in a fraction ofthe time and at a fraction of the cost than tradi-tional hand waxing. They offer enhanced shineand protection for your 4-wheeled friend.

Protecting your investmentsmakes good fiscal sense, andit's important to make sure oneof your biggest investments, yourcar, stays protected.

Although modern vehicle fin-ishes are quite durable and resist-ant to environmental elements, the paint still needs to be washedon a regular basis to preventbuildup that could permanentlyharm the finish of your car.

Vehicles today are operated insome pretty harsh conditions. Onthe road insects and bird drop-pings can land on the paint. In thewinter, cold weather road mainte-nance bathes paint with a causticsalt solution, while summer maybring fresh hot tar that can stickto paint. Even while safelyparked, dust, acid rain, pollen andbird droppings quickly adhereand over time, these contami-nants can chemically etch thesurface, leaving permanent paintdamage. Even plain old dirt even-tually scratches the finish, whileexcessive road salt can lead torust and corrosion up to 10 timesfaster than normal. The grime and

dust from road salts in the wintercan damage your vehicle's under-body as well as the paint and clearcoat.

To prevent this, cars need to bewashed regularly and contrary topopular belief, a rain shower doesnot constitute a car wash!

A car owner who decides he orshe wants the car to remain in thebest shape possible will have totake an active role in mainte-nance and damage prevention. One of the key things to remem-ber is to never allow any sub-stance to remain on the paint fortoo long; otherwise the risk fordamage increases. The easy solu-tion - take advantage of a carwash, most offer a variety of wash-es from basic to premium.

Here in west Knoxville, SynergyAuto Wash may look like the aver-age automated car wash, but own-er/operator Brian Davis has revo-lutionized the automated carwash by eliminating contact withyour car.

"Nothing automated touchesyour car," Davis said. "No sidebrushes or wraps. We have a per-

Revolutionizing the automated car wash

son on each side of the conveyorwho hand washes your car as itgoes down the conveyor, and wehand dry it as well."

By eliminating the soft-scrubfeature utilized by most automat-ed car washes and replacing itwith hand washing and drying, not only will your car be cleanerbut its finish will be protected as

well."We are the most high-end car

wash in the Southeast ... and yetwe are still competitively priced,"said Davis. "Our customers comefrom all over the area to experi-ence the safest and best qualitywash, as well as the exemplarycustom service Synergy Auto Washprovides."

Keeping up your vehicle'sappearance both inside and outnot only means you can take morepride in your ride, it also helpsyou preserve your car's resalevalue and makes it more appeal-ing to potential buyers.

In addition there are the obvi-ous aesthetic benefits to having aclean car.

Fuel efficiency is an importantissue for car buyers, and under-standably so. Conserving fuel isgood for drivers' budgets and theplanet, so the concept of fuel effi-ciency would seem to benefiteveryone.

But just because fuel efficiencyis a good concept does not meanthere are not misconceptionsabout it among drivers and auto-motive professionals alike. Thefollowing are some of the morewidely held misconceptions aboutfuel efficiency.

• Full tanks conserve fuel. Manypeople have long believed that anearly full tank of gas means thefuel within that tank is less likelyto evaporate, and that tanks thathalf-full tanks are losing gas to

evaporation. Though this mighthave been the case years ago, today's vehicle's are smarter thanever before, and their fuel systemsare designed with vapor recoverysystems so drivers travelingaround with tanks that are closerto empty than full aren't losing gasto evaporation.

• Manual transmissions aremore fuel efficient. Technologycan once again be credited withturning conventional wisdom onits head. In the past, manualtransmission vehicles might havebeen more fuel efficient becausedrivers could more efficiently con-trol engine revving with a 5-speedmanual transmission than theycould with the standard 3-speedautomatic transmission. However,

automatic transmissions haveevolved over the years, and theyare now more adept at controllingrevs and conserving fuel thanmany drivers of manual transmis-sion vehicles.

• When you fill up matters. Some drivers have long believedthat filling up during the coolerhours of the day earns them moregas than filling up when the tem-peratures are at their peak. Thistheory traces its origins to the factthat liquids are at their mostdense when they are cool. Buttoday's filling stations store theirgas in tanks beneath the ground, which is why you might see atanker emptying its contents intothe ground at the filling station. These underground tanks are

insulated from temperatureswings, so you aren't likely toreceive any more gas by filling upin the morning than you will whenfilling up at night.

• An old vehicle is destined tobe less fuel efficient. Any productthat is allowed to fall into disre-pair will prove less efficient thanproducts that are well maintained, and cars are no exception. A poor-ly maintained car will not operateat peak fuel efficiency because it'slikely being forced to work harderto get down the street than itwould if it was well kept. But awell-maintained vehicle shouldnot grow less fuel efficient overtime.

• Shifting into neutral while stop-ping saves gas. This is another mis-

conception that was once true but nolonger applies thanks to advances intechnology. When engines still hadcarburetors, shifting into neutralmight have helped conserve fuel bystopping the flow of gas into theengine while the car was idling. However, fuel injection systems arenow computerized and capable ofsensing when an engine is revvingabove idle. This shuts off the fuelinjectors, preventing gas from beinginjected into the engine and prevent-ing gas from being wasted while thevehicle is stopped as a result.

Taking steps to conserve fuel isa good way for drivers to savemoney and benefit the environ-ment. However, some of the con-ventional means to conservingfuel are no longer viable.
