EDITOR’S NOTE As part of our support to Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC)’s effort in promoting palm oil and healthy diets, IOI Group hosted a culinary show themed “Back to Basics” at our Sagil Estate in Tangkak, Johor recently. Celebrity chef Martin Yan from United States was the chef of the show. Read more about the story in our cover feature.

Lately, the Group received two more RSPO certification for its Syarimo and Ladang Sabah groupings in Sabah while Syarimo Palm Oil Mill also received the ISCC certification. We target to achieve 100% RSPO certification by end of 2013 in order to meet the on-going demand for sustainable palm oil in Europe and United States.

In May this year, IOI Corporation Bhd announced the demerger and listing of its property arm to unlock value in the property business. After the relisting exercise completes in December 2013, IOI Properties Bhd (IOIP) is set to become one of the largest developers on Bursa Malaysia in terms of market capitalisation.

On the international front, IOIP launched its condominium project named “The Trilinq” at Clementi, Singapore in March. This was followed by the groundbreaking ceremony of its second property development project in Xiamen, China named “IOI Palm City”, an integrated property development consisting of a shopping mall, a five-star hotel, boutique offices and luxury residences.

On the local front, IOIP garnered several local and international accolades recently. Besides being awarded the BCI Asia Top 10 Developers Award, it also received three Asia Pacific Property Awards for its signature projects in Malaysia namely the IOI City Mall, Palm Garden Golf Club and Puchong Finance and Commercial Centre. IOIP’s beautiful “Orchid Voila” creation on page 16 also won the Gold Award in its maiden participation in the Floria Putrajaya 2013.

The Group’s downstream manufacturing segment also capped an impressive achievement as IOI Loders Croklaan Asia delivered the single largest order of Betapol®, an infant formula that mimics the fat composition of human milk, to China. Earlier on, Betapol® has secured 17 new patents worldwide for its production processes.

Lastly, I would like to take the opportunity to wish our Muslim colleaguesand friends a blessed Ramadan and Selamat Berpuasa. Karen Liew

What is Palm Oil?

Palm oil is a major ingredient in many foods and a well-balanced healthy edible oil that is an important energy source for mankind. Consumed worldwide on a daily basis, palm oil is a versatile and nutritious vegetable oil, trans fat free with a rich content of antioxidants and vitamins. Palm oil is the most popular and highest consumed vegetable oil in the world among other oils and fats (see chart).

Consumption and international demand are steadily on the rise as world population continues to climb past the seven billion mark with no signs of slowing down. Moreover, palm oil is competitively priced against other edible oils in the food market such as soyabean, rapeseed and sunflower seed oils making it a popular choice among food producers. The benefits of palm oil also extend to those in cosmetics industry and manufacturers of household items such as detergent, surfactants, shampoos, soaps and plastics.

Palm oil’s ability to withstand high heat without losing its nutritional value sets it apart from other commercial cooking oils. Unlike canola oil or sunflower oil, palm oil is by far a more stable oil as it does not burn easily and is perfect for sautéing and frying crispy fish and chips or batter-coated fillets of salmon that will sizzle with an evenly golden-brown crust.

Palm oil’s unique chemical composition offers tremendous versatility and a broader range of applications compared to most other vegetable oils because it is virtually flavourless. This results in products that are more stable and allows the taste of the actual food ingredients to come through naturally without any unpleasant odours or off-flavours when cooking, frying, sautéing or reheating, which is not the case when shortenings manufactured from liquid oils are used. That is why palm oil is perfect for confectioneries requiring hard or solid fats such as pastries, cookies, crackers and other baked goods.

Although palm oil is the most popular and highest consumed vegetable oil in the world among other vegetable oils, the many benefits of palm oil are often weighed down by many misconceptions and fallacies.

Misconceptions about Palm Oil

There is the argument that palm oil is unhealthy and responsible for cancers and cardiovascular diseases because it contains a lot of saturated fats. Even though palm oil has about 40-45% saturated fats, recent studies have shown that there are several kinds of saturated fats. Saturated fats in palm oil are made up of a different fat composition than butter and animal fats, and it does not raise the bad cholesterol (LDL) levels.

The second misconception is that using palm oil is as dangerous as using trans fats. Trans fats have been identified as highly unhealthy because they have been found to raise LDL levels and lower good cholesterol (HDL) levels.

Baked goods and confectionary products use fats that need to be a bit more solid. Soybean oil is a soft oil and it needs to be hydrogenated to make it more solid, and during that process, it produces trans fats. Palm oil is naturally semi-hard, so we do not need to hydrogenate it and that makes it very suitable in bakeries.

Furthermore, palm oil contains vitamin E and vitamin A. Even though all vegetable oils contain vitamin E (tocopherols and tocotrienols), palm oil, especially red palm oil, has the richest known content of natural tocotrienols. Vitamin E is a powerful anti-oxidant and is capable of reducing bad cholesterol levels, delaying the body’s ageing process and offers protection against cancer.

Many have been happily consuming

fine cuisine prepared using

palm oil and blissfully using body care

products made of palm oil, but are

unaware of this fact. Virtually everything

that we eat and consume daily contains

palm oil. Yet, most of us in Malaysia (one

of the world’s largest producers of palm

oil) had never seen an oil palm tree and

our knowledge about this precious oil

seed is limited to what we have heard or

read in the media.

Clearing the Misconceptions with Martin Yan

The Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) has been working hard to change the unfair perception that some people have about palm oil. Over the years, MPOC has created many promotional materials and sponsored many programmes to promote the benefits of palm oil as well as to educate consumers on the truths behind the crop. The recent palm oil culinary show named “Back to Basics” formed a key part of MPOC’s efforts to promote palm oil to the world.

Knowing the basics about palm oil is essential before you begin to use it to capture the flavours of your dishes so Master Chef Martin, a celebrated host of over 3,000 cooking shows and a highly respected food consultant, along with the crew of AFC, arrived at Sagil Estate on 27 June 2013 for an in-depth interview detailing IOI Group’s plantation operations and its sustainable practices with Senior General Manager (Mills & Engineering) Mr Wong Chee Kuan and Senior Estate Manager of Sagil Estate Mr Chong Nyong Poh. Satisfied with the info given, the accomplished chef then proceeded to incorporate this healthy palm oil in his mouth-watering recipes.

This one-of-its-kind cooking series will not only enable the audience to learn about various recipes and cooking skills from the Master Chef; they will also be able to see the operations of a plantation estate and learn more about palm oil from Mr Wong and other invited guests.

With the culinary series set to be broadcasted across Asia sometime soon, we hope that many more consumers will be convinced with the truth about palm oil and all the health benefits that palm oil has to offer.

The “Back to Basics” cooking series is a collaboration between MPOC and Asian Food Channel (AFC), which features the master of the quick chop and hot wok Master Chef Martin Yan as he traversed to one of IOI Group’s beautiful oil palm estates in Johor to showcase the operations of an oil palm plantation and explored the many benefits of palm oil.

Being the host to this exclusive cooking series revealed our support to MPOC’s efforts in promoting Malaysian palm oil as well as our constant effort to change the public’s perception about palm oil. The filming of the cooking series took place at our beautiful Sagil Estate from 27 June to 1 July 2013.

BERITAIOI06

IOI’S Q3 EARNINGS UP 2.8%Corporation Bhd (IOI) recorded RM567.8 million net profit for its third quarter ended 31 March 2013

which was 2.8% higher compared with the RM552 million noted in the previous corresponding quarter, thanks to better performance from its resource-based manufacturing and property divisions. This was, however, mitigated by lower translation gain on foreign currency-denominated borrowings and lower profit contributions from the plantation business.

The plantation profit decreased by 31% to RM208.3 million from RM303.2 million due to lower crude palm oil (CPO) and palm kernel (PK) prices, though partially offset by higher fresh fruit bunches production. Meanwhile, higher margins from the oleochemical business and increased sales volume from refinery and specialty fats sub-segments, improved the resource-based manufacturing

profit from RM89.1 million previously to RM226.1 million.

As for IOI’s property development, its operating profit of RM181.6 million is 65% higher than the profit reported last year of RM110.1 million. This was attributed to higher development revenue in this quarter and a gain of RM21.1 million arising from the revaluation of existing equity interest following the acquisition of the remaining 50% equity holding in a jointly controlled entity, Prime Joy Investment Limited.

Overall, IOI expects to perform satisfactorily during the remaining quarter of this financial year.

IOI

On Track towards Sustainability

Group successfully attained two more Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) Compliance Certification for its Plantation Management Units

– Syarimo Grouping and Ladang Sabah Grouping on 20 March 2013 and 3 April 2013 respectively. Both certificates are valid for the next five years. To date, 83% of our palm oil mills and 74% of our plantation estates have been RSPO-certified.

In addition, Syarimo Palm Oil Mill was also accredited by International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) on 13 June 2013. The certification is valid for one year.

These achievements placed IOI Group well on track towards achieving total sustainability in all its plantation estates and palm oil supply chain in the near future.

Students of SJK (C) Pei Cheng can look forward to attending classes in a new location that is nearer to their home.

On 2 April 2013, IOI Group handed over 2.27 hectares of its land at Bandar Putra, Kulai for the school’s construction in a groundbreaking ceremony that demonstrated IOI Group’s continuous aim to improve the amenities in IOI Group’s townships.

The existing school in Kampung Jawa in Pengerang is being relocated to accommodate the development of the Petronas Refinery and Petrochemical Integrated Development (Rapid) project. Among those present at the groundbreaking ceremony were Johor’s Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani, Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong and IOI Group Executive Director Mr Lee Yeow Seng.

The new location will spur the enrolment rate, with the school currently only having 16 students on its roster. Slated to be completed eight months after construction commences, the addition of a new school within IOI Group’s township is bound to benefit the residents and surrounding communities. Two other government-aided Chinese schools nearby, SJK (C) Kulai 1 and SJK (C) Kulai 2, have reached their maximum capacities.

IOI GROUP DONATES LAND IN KULAI TO SCHOOL

Commenting on the school’s relocation, its principal Mdm Ng Mooi Cheng said that the new school would be able to accommodate about 1,100 students in its first enrolment in 2014, as 36 classrooms would be built under the first phase of development.

Meanwhile, the photo booth corner was popular with families making a beeline to have their photos taken at the garden terrace located right outside the air-conditioned ballroom. Children and adults alike were spotted walking around with their favourite cartoon characters painted on their faces and hands. The caricature artists were kept busy as well!

The morning started on a high note with the crowd warming up (and having a good laugh at the clowns’ and Angry Bird mascot’s antics on stage) to the tune of “Oppa IOI Style”. After a heart-warming welcome address by IOI Group Executive Director Dato’ Lee Yeow Chor, the IOI Family Day 2013 was launched with all the games and activities in full swing!

The Inter-Divisional Teambuilding Competition saw six teams from Corporate, Property and Plantation divisions (two teams from each division) challenging each other to emerge as the Overall Champion. The participants gamely battled it out through ten challenging games such as Giant Chopsticks, Giant Slipper, Chain Reaction, Boogie Woogie, and Tug-of-war.

The men proved to be a sporting bunch as they signed up to take part in the Flower Arrangement Competition, with Dato’ Lee joining them in creating artistic floral displays with the few stalks of roses and gerberas. The ladies too showcased their nifty moves in “pulling tea” (teh tarik) while dancing. Needless to say, the crowd was much impressed!

While waiting for the results to be announced, everyone took a breather and enjoyed “The Amazing Moudini Illusionist” captivating magic show followed by the prize-giving ceremony for both the Flower Arrangement Competition and Teh Tarik Competition. Whoops of joy erupted when the Overall Champion for Inter-Divisional Teambuilding Competition was announced – Congratulations to Team F (Property Division)!

On 11 April 2013, IOI Group Executive Director Dato’ Lee Yeow Chor, Property Director Mr Teh Chin Guan together with

the IOI senior management team attended the one-day “Leaders Developing Leaders” workshop at Putrajaya Marriott Hotel and Spa.

This course stressed the importance of playing an active role in developing talent in the organisation and how to build the elements of a talent development culture. It is essential to understand the balance between needing to develop people and needing to deliver business results. The programme included lecture, group discussions, exercises, case studies and videos.

In today’s increasingly competitive environment, we need the best talent to give IOI Group the competitive edge. Sensing this need, CEO of Leaderonomics and The Star Publications’ Director of Operations

Mr Roshan Thiran led the insightful and practical session as he brings with him real-life experiences while working as the Director of Global Talent Management with Johnson & Johnson and General Electric (GE) for more than 12 years, working in a number of roles in the US, Europe and Asia.

At the end, the IOI senior management team was informed that they will be embarking on “Succession Planning” to develop our people. All the Heads of Departments are required to contribute to this “Succession Planning” to nurture their identified potential staff, as part of “growing themselves”.

“You cannot shine the light on another’s path without illuminating your own.”

HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT

BERITAIOI13

Coaching and mentoring are about supporting individuals and their career aspirations. Coaches and mentors play a major role

in their staff’s career development. The process of coaching and mentoring is described as continuous, rather than a one-time event. The roles of coach and mentor are directed toward the improvement of three functions: skills, performance, and development.

Coaching and mentoring have become part of the everyday workplace contributing to increased job satisfaction, personal productivity, and employment stability within an organisation. These many roles include “...advisor, sponsor, tutor, advocate, coach, protector, role model and guide”.

With workplace becoming increasingly diversified nowadays coupled with fast-paced changing work environment, mentoring and coaching have become essential components for managers and leaders.

COACHING & MENTORING SKILLS

Looks like everyone enjoyed the training session.

Problem-solving is one skill that can make a key difference in our career. Having problems at work are

a norm and if left unattended, they can go on to create even bigger problems and result in us being stressed. The challenges we encounter each day could be either one of these scenarios – solving a problem for a client or colleague, supporting and assisting those who are solving problems, or discovering new problems to solve.

On 7 May 2013, 21 participants joined a one-day “Solving Problems and Making Decisions” workshop conducted by Mr Ang Ming Ern from Leaderonomics. It was designed to equip the participants with effective tools and strategies for root cause analysis and decision-making through a combination of interactive activities like role-playing, case studies, exercises, games and stories.

The problems we face can be large or small, simple or complex, and easy or difficult to solve. Regardless of the nature of the problems, being a confident problem-solver is vital to your success. After completing the course, participants were able to:

• Recognise the difference between symptoms andidentify the root cause.

• Adoptamulti-perspectiveviewofchallengesfaced.• Use tools and strategies to analyse a problem, and

generate ideas.• Identifypersonal levelsof aversion to risk andhow

In view of this, the Corporate Training and Organisational Development Department organised a “Coaching and Mentoring” workshop on 26 June 2013. HELP University’s Director of the Centre for Workplace Performance and Learning and CAREERsence Mr Eric Bryan conducted the training which was attended by IOI managers.

Overall, the participants learned how to use a wider variety of teaching strategies and keep employees more actively involved in jobs. Peer support and coaching, rather than leadership by managers and supervisors, were emphasised during the highly interactive programme. Aspects of effective workplace coaching and mentoring skills development were imparted through lecture-cum-workshop, role plays, demonstrations, individual and group exercises, and group discussions using practical case applications.

On 14 May 2013, IOI Group Executive Chairman Tan Sri Lee Shin Cheng announced the demerger of its property business

from IOI Corporation Bhd in a briefing to analysts and media in Putrajaya Marriott Hotel and Spa.

The proposed demerger is expected to provide greater visibility on the separate performance of IOI Corporation Bhd’s plantation and resource-based manufacturing businesses and IOI Properties’ property related business, enabling the capital markets and shareholders to better ascertain the respective merits, risk profile and prospects of the two distinct businesses. Furthermore it provides a platform for the respective entities to pursue different growth and business strategies, enabling IOI Properties to gain further recognition and corporate reputation, and further enhance the customer base.

The move also enables IOI Corporation Bhd’s shareholders to directly participate in IOI Properties which will focus in property development, property investment as well as leisure and hospitality. The shareholders are also able to unlock the value of IOI Corporation Bhd’s property division through the listing. As for the investment community, it provides an opportunity to participate in the company’s future performance by way of equity participation. IOI Properties has notable competitive advantages and key strengths such as:

a) an established track record spanning more than two decades in the property development industry and a solid market reputation;

b) well managed and prudently run by an experienced management team;

c) focus on diversified product portfolio and business;

In line with compliance to Principles and Criteria of RSPO in plantations and refineries, many integrated palm industry players

took the advantage to extend sustainability compliance to include downstream oleochemicals processing via the Supply Chain Certification System (SCCS). The certification provides accessibility to the Mass Balance (MB) and Segregated (SG) oleochemicals which has these notable advantages to the Book and Claim system:

i) There is actual physical delivery (uptake) of certified oil to the oleochemical manufacture.

ii) There is traceability of sustainable oleochemical products through the SCCS.

SEGREGATION (SG) – Is it Segregating Buyers from Sustainability?

In spite of the full traceability and esteemed claim of sustainable source product content, the established rules on the SG system

for oils indicate strict adherence to stoichiometric yields and the isolation requirement of certified from non-certified materials extends to the oleochemical derivatives.

Prevailing markets demand for sustainable oleochemicals stemming from the idealism of full traceability and esteemed claim of sustainable contents may not be able to be met by supply for the SG and the Identity Preserved material.

Unlike oils, oleochemicals and its derivatives are majorly sold as fractions hence stoichiometric yields (which could be lower than 1%) may result in a higher premium that is a deterrent for many buyers desiring a lower entry cost. In addition to taking delivery of certified materials and being SCCS-compliant, a producer is required to abide by strict separation requirements to demonstrate proper separation of certified and non-certified materials along the manufacturing process and must account for processing yields. In terms of feasibility of manufacture, current volumes simply cannot justify a minimum economical run quantity required of a full segregation required along the supply chain. Fundamentally these issues prohibit the growth of the sustainable oleochemical derivatives market.

MASS BALANCE (MB) – A More Favourable Option for the Masses?

Comparatively, the MB rules are more flexible with economical provisions and accessibility – factors deemed favourable to

bridge the gap of the SG system and entice the switch from Book and Claim.

It does not involve processing yields, as such segregation hassles and worries about production schedules are avoided due to the possibility of offering volumes without a minimum economical order quantity. Products complying with the MB system can be relatively easy to access as a producer needs to take delivery of the certified materials and is SCCS-compliant but not dictated by traceability every step of the way within the manufacturing process because it is merely paper stock balance. Ultimately, lower cost impact, greater accessibility and availability are facilitators that will increase the uptake of RSPO-certified sustainable oleochemical derivatives.

As the market for the sustainable oleochemicals grows, the MB system may indeed be the interim solution, a bridge to achieving full traceability systems. There will be a compromise on traceability but the fact that there is physical transition of sustainable oil in the MB system is already an upgrade from the Book and Claim system which many buyers may already be adopting. Indeed it is seen as a facilitator to enable the market to upgrade with minimum disruption to cost and accessibility.

For now, the first step has to be taken towards the path of full traceability – to nurture the growth of sustainable oleochemicals market through the MB system.

MB – A SOLUTION TO BRIDGE THE GAP?

Towards the Next Step – a discussion held ahead of the RT10 organised by RSPO in

Singapore in November 2012.

On 13 May 2013, more than 80 people gathered in New York City for the first Shea Trade and Industry Conference in

the United States. The Global Shea Alliance (GSA) was founded in 2011 and aims to design, develop, and deliver strategies that drive a competitive and sustainable shea industry worldwide, improving the livelihoods of rural African women and their communities.

As an important player in the shea industry and a member of the GSA, IOI Loders Croklaan sponsored the event and delivered two speeches. Supply Chain Manager Mr Antoine Turpin spoke about the supply chain, explaining how kernels find their way from the trees they grow on, into products like chocolates and cosmetics.

He also showed a special IOI Loders Croklaan video on the shea supply chain, giving the audience an insight on how the supply is organised.

Product Manager of IOI Loders Croklaan Americas Mr Mark Weyland spoke about the technical sides of shea in Cocoa Butter Equivalents.

Both presentations and the video were well received by the audience. Interesting meetings took place with some of our customers who were also present at the conference. The conference was an important event that helped us share our knowledge on shea with the people and industries using it in their everyday products.

In addition to palm oil, IOI Loders Croklaan is an important supplier of shea fats and oils. The

shea nut is a wild crop from Africa. “Wild” means that the nuts do not grow on plantations but they are collected from their natural surroundings.

The nut contains shea butter, a versatile ingredient that is renowned for its use in cosmetics and skin creams. Next to the cosmetic use, shea is also a versatile ingredient for food products. It can be used in a variety of products such as margarine, chocolate and bakery products.

To promote the use of shea as a food ingredient, IOI Loders Croklaan Europe presented at the annual gathering of the institute for Biotechnology in Zakopane, Poland. This year, the event was attended by around 100 representatives of the Polish industry, both food and non-food producers.

The presentation titled “Shea: where is it coming from, where is it going to” was aimed at triggering the audience to think about the diverse possibilities of shea as a food ingredient.

While this approach certainly protected the ideas of scientists and engineers, it had numerous drawbacks, including limiting a company’s innovation power to the number of people it could hire. It also kept the companies from tapping into the solutions and technologies of millions of inventors, suppliers, academics and entrepreneurs around the world.

A reflection of this cultural shift at General Mills was the Supplier Summit held this spring at their headquarters in Minneapolis. The event brought together 50 of General Mills’ key suppliers to network and hear about the company’s business strategies and partnership opportunities for new technologies or manufacturing solutions.

At the last summit, General Mills presented suppliers with seven specific challenges that they were looking to solve and

PROMOTING SUSTAINABLE PALM OIL FOR CANDLES

On 16 and 17 May 2013, almost 100 European candle makers gathered in Gdansk, Poland for the annual meeting of the

European Candle Association (ECA). For new member IOI Loders Croklaan, it was their first time participating in this members-only event.

The event was officiated by former Polish President Lech Walesa, who took the time to read and personally sign the IOI Loders Croklaan brochure on palm oil for use in candles.

Traditionally, candles are manufactured using paraffin. In recent years, the use of palm oil as an alternative and valuable ingredient for candles has grown substantially. During the event, IOI Loders Croklaan Sustainability Director Mr Hidde van Kersen presented the company as a reliable supplier and a leader in bringing sustainable palm oil to the European market.

The event was indeed a success, with fruitful meetings held among existing and potential customers.

For years, the status quo for scientists and engineers at many companies,

including General Mills, was to shield their exciting projects from the outside world in order to protect the confidentiality and competitiveness of their work.

Even a company’s suppliers were kept in the dark about company strategies for growth and the types of new technologies or solutions that could drive the company’s business forward.

received more than 200 submissions in return. Of these, 76 were considered further and 15 of the proposals are now active projects.

Executives at this year’s summit challenged suppliers to think on an international level, as General Mills has employees developing and making new products throughout the world for its international businesses.

IOI Loders Croklaan won the Innovation Award for collaborating with General Mills to deliver an innovative solution that removed trans fat from their frosting line resulting in £80 million of new business. The new improved frosting line will be unveiled in mid-2014.

“It’s not about whether there are issues – it’s about how you respond. With IOI Loders Croklaan it’s “We’re here to work with you.” IOI Loders Croklaan is about doing things right. They think about what’s best for both companies. We asked for the impossible and IOI Loders Croklaan delivered,” said General Mills Sourcing Manager (Fats & Oils) Ms Mary Muldowney.

“Receiving General Mill’s Innovation Award is a significant accomplishment by our team working in full collaboration with our customer. It’s consistent with our drive to bring value to our customers through: Best Supply Chain, Product Technology Advantage, and Easy To Do Business With,” said IOI Loders Croklaan Americas Chief Operating Officer Mr Bill Troy.

obstacles were forged to test the human spirit. For through these obstacles, the magical power of teamwork will be harnessed.

On 17 May 2013, the hotel’s heads of departments gathered for a series of obstacle courses during its Team Power training programme. The programme was designed to help employees foster a closer relationship built on trust, which in turn creates a more positive and cohesive corporate culture within the organisation.

An interesting obstacle required the team to remove a giant ring from the pole. If any part of the ring touches the pole, a “spell” is triggered and the team has only seconds to return the ring to its original position, and then attempt to remove the ring again.

IOI Properties Berhad in Johor’s YAA presentation ceremony on 29 June 2013 saw another eight recipients receiving their awards from Senior General Manager Mr Simon Heng.

The residents, made up of diverse nationalities, shared the common background of being exploited and abused by their employers, with a number of them trafficked into Malaysia illegally. After being rescued by the authorities, they are now placed in the shelter while waiting to return to their respective home country.

The visit started on a warm note with each volunteer introducing themselves to the women, and played an ice-breaking game called “Human Knots” to put the residents at ease with the unfamiliar presence of strangers. It was a success as laughter and claps rang out as the residents and volunteers worked together to “unbind” the knotted hands.

Soon after, the residents were divided into two groups to participate in the two different activities for the day. The first group found themselves in the Homemade Mask Session whereby they were taught how to make facial mask using ingredients such as yoghurt and oatmeal. Meanwhile, the second group of residents watched and participated enthusiastically in the Chocolate Cornflakes-Making Session.

The fun activities ended on a high note, as the residents were seen having fun and in high spirits. After the delicious buffet lunch, the memorable visit was capped off with the presentation of souvenirs by Executive Director of Yayasan TSLSC Datin Joanne Wong to the representative from the shelter Puan Fairuz, who accepted on behalf of the residents.

On 29 June 2013, 20 volunteers of IOI Group and Yayasan Tan Sri Lee Shin Cheng (Yayasan TSLSC) collaborated with SUKA Society, a non-governmental organisation that helps victims of human trafficking, bringing joy to more than 110 women staying in a protection shelter in Kuala Lumpur.

FAMILY SPIRIT

BERITAIOI34

elab Keluarga IOI (KKIOI) organised two fun-filled trips for KKIOI members and their families – this

time to rolling waves and sunny days in one of Malaysia’s best-loved islands, Pulau Redang on 10 May and 17 May 2013.

JOURNEYING TO REDANG ISLAND108 KKIOI members and their families boarded the ferry to Redang Island for a 3D/2N full board trip to relax and unwind. The main highlight was the snorkeling adventure at the Marine Park, whereby majestic coral reefs and colourful fishes were within touching distance. At dusk, the group strolled the beach front under a canopy of stars while stopping occasionally for souvenir-hunting at the shops littered along the seaside and exploring the island on their own. Laughter can be heard miles away when some of the KKIOI members sportingly danced “Gangnam Style” in support of a “Save Our Ocean” environmental campaign by F&N.

CRUISING ABOARD SUPERSTAR VIRGOA week later, 42 KKIOI members hopped aboard the Superstar Virgo that brought them to the shores of Pulau Redang (route Singapore-Pulau Redang-Singapore). The group enjoyed two nights of first-class dining, entertainment, activities and fun on every deck of the cruise ship. They were spoilt for choice with 12 F&B outlets that served a wide range of food ranging from international buffet dinner to authentic Chinese fine dining, Italian food and Indian cuisine. The group also took the opportunity to lounge at the sun deck while enjoying the sea breeze and being serenaded by singers from the Taverna Poolside. Besides joining the shore excursion to explore the island, they were also treated to a mesmerising performance known as “Timeless”, a combination of magic, acrobatics and singing show, at The Lido Lounge.
