Can You Spot the Differences?

What a difference a year can make! In 2011 (pictured right), the Village was recovering from several inches of snow and ice dumped by a record-breaking blizzard. Exactly one year later (pictured left), we are enjoying a balmy, virtually snow-free winter.

Coke Is It! JKV Restaurants Offer Coca-Cola Products

When ordering a cold beverage at the John Knox Village restaurants – Places, the Courtyard Café, Fireside Dining and Lakeside Grille – you’ll now be able to enjoy a variety of Coca-Cola product.

Although the offerings will change slightly from restaurant to restaurant, Coca Cola favorites including Classic Coke, Diet Coke, Coke Zero, Sprite, Mr. Pibb, Gold Peak Unsweetened Tea and Lemonade will be available at every location. Fanta Orange, Sprite Zero and other Coke products also will be available at some locations.

“We were excited when Coke asked us to become one of their corporate partners because we are now able to offer our residents and other restaurant patrons a greater variety of the beverage options they grew up loving,” said Todd Hollander, director of dining services.

In addition to offering fountain drinks, all the restaurants will carry plastic bottles for carry-out, as well as glass bottle products – “just like the good old days.” What’s more, the restaurants are installing new equipment for the fountain offerings that will provide customers with a better, more consistent-tasting soft drink.

Caleb Howell consults with Rita Staggs, manager of clinical services

Nurse strengthens CNAs through education “Caleb Howell said he has a passion for teaching and patient care. “Howell, LPN, charge nurse, John Knox Village, was nominated for the Village Care Center’s Employee of the Month by a CNA grateful for Howell’s ability to educate. “He said he believes education keeps the profession healthy. ‘I think that’s always important,” Howell said. “You’re ensuring the future of nursing.’ “While half his time is on 200 Unit at Autumn Ridge overseeing care by the CNAs, other half is at the bedside administering medicine, dressing changes and working with older patients who have experienced stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, long-term care and diabetes. Howell said he was inspired to teach by several instructors at State Fair Community College in Sedalia, Mo., where he earned his degree…” Read more

Same friendly face. Same friendly voice. Effective Monday, Feb. 6, the resident assistance office will be relocating from the Courtyard Commons to 167 Villager Inn (in the marketing offices). Administrative Assistant Cathy Reynolds will continue to provide the same services to residents and families, but will have the benefit of marketing administrative staff being cross-trained on her duties. In turn, Cathy will be cross-trained on some marketing administrative functions so both groups will have backup during absences and busy times that they don’t have now. We recognize there will be an adjustment for residents living in the Courtyard Complex who are used to Cathy’s friendly assistance, but organizationally, we feel we can capture some efficiencies and synergy for the entire community by the move. Cathy can still be reached at 347-2112 or [email protected].

Women Have Heart Attacks, Too?

More women die of cardiovascular disease than from the next four causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer. But 80 percent of cardiac events in women could be prevented if women made the right choices for their hearts involving diet, exercise and abstinence from smoking. Make it your mission to learn all you can about heart attacks and stroke — don’t become a statistic. CALL 9-1-1

Signs of a Heart Attack If you have any of these signs, don’t wait more than five minutes before calling for help. Call 9-1-1...Get to a hospital right away.

1. Uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain in the center of your chest. It lasts more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back.

2. Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach. 3. Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort. 4. Other signs such as breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness. 5. As with men, women’s most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or

discomfort. But women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting and back or jaw pain.

Research Shows That Patient Access to Primary Care Services is Linked to Lower Mortality

New research published in the January/February issue of Annals of Family Medicine suggests that when patients have access to certain features of primary care generally found in the “patient-centered medical home” model of care tend to have a lower individual risk of death. Researchers looked at data on 60,199 adults aged 18 years to 90 years. The study showed that patients who reported three features in their usual source of care – comprehensiveness, patient-centeredness (meaning the physician or health care professional listened to the patients' concerns and sought their advice when choosing between treatments) and enhanced access (extended hours) – had lower mortality during up to six years follow-up than patients reporting less access to those three attributes.1 So what does this mean? Among other things, it means that using services at our Associate Wellness Center– in addition to your own primary care physician – can help you live longer. OK, that’s not really a revelation. Over the last year, we’ve talked about ways that lowering your risk level for disease by taking charge of your health can enhance the quality of your life. But seeing a study that says so is even better! The Associate Wellness Center’s nurse practitioners do just those three things:

Page 6: 02-03-12 e Connections

- Comprehensive care for your health is why they’re there – as an extension of the care recommended by your family physician.

- Their whole philosophy of care is centered around you, the patient. - And by having the clinic right here on campus, where Village Wellness members can get to it quickly and easily, we

most certainly provide “enhanced access.” So take advantage of the resources at your fingertips and live long and prosper!
