A new convenience store will be opening on the site of the old Kwik Save supermarket in Clifton.

The Co-op food successfully applied to the Nottingham City Council in February to open a new store on Southchurch Drive which will be allowed to serve alcohol between 7am and 10pm seven days a week.

Now Co-op will have to put in their applications for building regulations, although the store has yet to announce an opening date.

The popular food branch will be the second Co-op store to open within the Clifton area, with an additional shop already open on Farnborough Road, next to the Winning Post pub.

Although some residents have voiced their concerns the store will attract anti-social behaviour, Co-op management say they will have strategic measures in place to help lower locals’ safety worries.

Michael Field, compliance manager for the Co-op, said the firm would be carrying out a lot of training and sticking to local police’s requests in order to make the store a safe environment for residents in the area.

“We have another store nearby,” he said. “The police have only had to be called there once.

“We do not anticipate it will be needed at this store, but if it is, we will hire additional security and put that in place.”

New Co-op to open in CliftonThe 12th Clifton Brownies received some very special correspondence recently with a letter from The Queen arriving on their doorstep, but it was a letter with a local twist.

Jean Rogers, who runs the 12th Clifton Brownies, takes up the special story.

“We sent 90th birthday cards to Her Majesty The Queen, with photos of our Brownie group to help celebrate the special occasion,” Jean told The Local News.

“We also sent a invitation to The Queen to ask if she would like to come to our 30th birthday celebration in June.

“We got a reply from Buckingham Palace which was fantastic and everyone was so excited to see what had been written.

“We also got a Post-It note from her lady-in-waiting telling us that from the age of 12, she lived at Clifton Hall.

“The note also added that the lady-in-waiting’s stepfather was no other than Peter Thomas Clifton.”

Peter Thomas Clifton succeeded his father, Percy Robert Clifton, as owner of the Clifton estates in Nottinghamshire in 1944, before selling them on in the late 1940s and 1950s.

You can see the letter and the Post-It note above.

A Clifton family are raising money towards the costs of vital medicine that will help fight off their daughter’s rare cancer.

Wayne and Karen Blacknell - of Bournmoor Avenue in Clifton - have launched a campaign in a bid to help their daughter Elly have a chance of staying in remission after going through years of intense treatment.

The brave 14-year-old was given a cancer diagnosis over four years ago, back in February 2012.

Elly then had to undergo and emergency lifesaving operation just three months later.

The operation took place at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, which is located in Birmingham.

During this important operation she had her left leg amputated above the knee. Elly, who is a prolific regional swimmer, is now currently in remission.

She is seeking help to raise the £96,000 needed towards the cost of an immune therapy drug.

This important drug is called Mifarmurtide and it could prevent her cancer from returning in future.

Her mother, Karen, said she is determined to raise the money needed for her medicine through fundraising efforts.

“There is an immunotherapy drug called Mifarmutide that Elly could have which could prevent her cancer from coming back,” Karen told The Local News.

“But this drug is usually given alongside chemo and Elly has finished her treatment.

“There have been no trials to use this drug the way we want to as Elly’s cancer is very rare.

“Elly is such an amazing person and a true inspiration to all who know her.

“She doesn’t let her disability get in the way of anything she wants to do.

“She always has a smile on her face. Nothing phases her.

“She’s already won regional and national swimming competitions in Nottingham.

“Her dream is to become a Paralympic swimmer. We are so, so proud of Elly.”

The family have already begun fundraising around the area, including helping bag pack at the Morrisons store in Clifton earlier this month.

Karen added: “We can’t thank the staff at the Clifton Morrisons store enough.

“They moved heaven and earth for allowing us to bag pack there.

“We have raised a massive £801 towards our target.

“We couldn’t have raised without the massive amount of support we’ve had from the area.

“The Clifton community have been fantastic and it just goes to show that the estate is pulling together for our daughter.”

The Blacknells will be hosting a fundraising event at the Shed on Southchurch Drive, Clifton on 18th June.

The Latest Updates From The Tram

CLIFTON TICKET OFFERS EXTENDED

Nottingham’s tram network has teamed up with Notts Outlaws to help celebrate the start of the new NatWest T20 Blast season by offering cricket fans discount travel.

Season and match ticket holders can beat the traffic by using the tram’s special £2 Event Ticket for return travel to any of the Outlaws’ home games this season, which start with a clash against Birmingham Bears on Friday, May 20.

Families travelling to this summer’s matches can also use the network’s popular £5 Group Ticket, which is available for unlimited tram travel for two adults and up to three children from 4pm on weekdays and all day on weekends.

Jamie Swift, Head of Marketing at NET, commented: “The Outlaws feature a host of England internationals and big crowds are expected throughout what promises to be an exciting summer of cricket in Nottingham.

“Roads around Trent Bridge are likely to be increasingly busy on match days and the tram offers the perfect opportunity to beat the traffic with our Nottingham Station tram stop just a 15-minute walk from the ground.”

TAKE THE TRAM TO T20 AT TRENT BRIDGE

Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington OBE and Mountaineer Doug Scott CBE have become the latest people to have a tram named in their honour.

Swimmer Rebecca’s career highlight came at the 2008 Beijing Olympics where she became a double gold winning medallist and broke a 19-year-old World Record in the 800m freestyle.

Doug Scott, who was born in Nottingham, has been called ‘one of Britain’s all-time great high altitude mountaineers’ having climbed the highest peak on each of all seven continents; ‘the Seven Summits’.

NET’s Head of Marketing, Jamie Swift, said: “We were delighted both Rebecca and Doug accepted the honour of having trams

named after them following the nominations process last year. “Very soon now, we’ll have names on all our new trams and, together, they represent a virtual ‘who’s who’ of people who have made a tremendous contribution to the local area and, in some cases, far beyond.”

PKA Kickboxing, who are based in Clifton, were thrilled to receive the fantastic news that one of their younger members Dylan Varley has successfully passed his Black Belt Grading.

The Clifton club has been successfully running children and adult classes at Clifton Leisure Centre for over 14 years.

This marks the youngest member to ever receive his Black Belt grading at the club.

Dylan, who started training with the club at the age of eight, successfully achieved his Black Belt grade recently.

What makes this so remarkable is that he has done this at the age of 12.

Dylan has been committing to his training and improvement for almost five years.

Mr Mike Haig, the UK principle of the Professional Kickboxing Association (PKA), conducted the grading at the group’s headquarters in Birmingham.

Dylan was graded alongside adults who averaged twice his age.

Club coach, Martin Byrne, told The Local News: “The PKA Black Belt is a nationally recognised black belt

“Achieving it at such a young age is a fantastic achievement for Dylan.

“It goes to show that with the dedication and determination even our youngest members can achieve great things.”

Dylan took his achievement as always in his stride.

He celebrated his amazing success with a custom-made cake (pictured above).

If you want to take your first steps to becoming a black belt, or are just interested in a new and exciting way to get fit and increase your confidence, then contact Martin on 07979 965404 to book a free trial class at the club.

You can also visit the website at kickboxuk.com for more information about the club.

Southern Cycle Corridor works set to roll ths summer

Work is set to start on the Southern Cycle Corridor works, which is the next part of the City Council’s Cycle Ambition programme.

The work, part-funded by a £6.1m grant from D2N2, the Local Enterprise Partnership, will continue until late August.

The aim is to provide improved cycle links between the city centre and Clifton, Clifton South Park & Ride and Nottingham Trent University Clifton Campus.

The first phase of the works will run along the eastern pavement of Farnborough Road, between Silverdale Walk and Green Lane.

Improvements will include widening the pavement to create a wide shared pedestrian / cycleway.

There will also be the relocating of street lights and signs, providing pedestrian and cyclist priority at side roads and accesses - and building two new parallel crossings at the Green Lane roundabout to help pedestrians and cyclists to cross.

There will be some minor disruption during the project that may affect pedestrians and there may be some impact on traffic using Clifton Lane and Farnborough Road around the Green Lane roundabout.

Pedestrian and traffic flows will be maintained throughout the work period.

Councillor Nick McDonald, portfolio holder for Growth and Transport at Nottingham City Council, said: “This is the second part of the Nottingham Cycle Ambition Programme to start, with works on the Western Corridor already well under way.

“It is part of the city-wide cycling improvements we are introducing to provide quicker, safer and better cycling routes for all Nottingham’s cyclists.

“I would like to apologise for any inconvenience that may be caused as we deliver this world-class cycling infrastructure that will encourage more people to shift from cars to bikes as their preferred transport option.”

Work on the Western Corridor continue in the Abbey Bridge area and are scheduled to be complete in July. For further information on the Cycle Ambition programme, see http://transport2.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/cycle.

Clifton NG11 Cars director Kevin Clarke is going the extra mile to clean up piles of rubbish that are being dumped nearby his office.

He says he has seen a rise in the number of people dumping sofas, gas canisters and carpets in the last month near his cab business on Varney Road.

However, Kevin is determined to clean up the estate and says he will be meeting with Nottingham City Council representatives in order to find a way forward in tackling those who continue to dump their rubbish.

The 60-year-old from Silverdale said: “Over the past few years I have had to clear up all sorts of messes near my office.

So much of this is happening and I always see stuff like mattresses being dumped around here.

“I have been here in Clifton for over 15 years and it’s steadily got worse over the last year or so. I feel the council should take more responsibility with the issue and try to buy the land back or put up gates to stop people from doing this again.

“I will be attending a meeting with the council in the near future so we can work together to come to a sensible resolution.”

Clifton North’s councillor Pat Ferguson said if businesses were agreeable, a meeting would be arranged with them and the town centre manager to find a way forward.

“It’s been going on for so long, residents and those responsible businesses affected would be justified in giving up,” she said.

A City Council spokesman said Nottingham was the UK’s cleanest big city and takes incidents of fly-tipping very seriously.

NG11 Cars’ Kevin going the extra mile to clean up Clifton

The spokesman said: “We run one of the few free bulky waste collections in the country, meaning there’s no reason for residents to dump waste illegally.

“We would urge anyone who witnesses it to take details such as registration numbers and contact our anti-social behaviour helpline on 0115 915 2020.”

A Clifton school took an interesting entrepreneurial approach to making sure every one of its 450 Key Stage 3 pupils can enjoy an end-of-year day trip.

The Farnborough Academy in Clifton organised a massive fundraising push in a bid to raise £7,000 to pay for Year 7 to go to the Peak District, Year 8 to make a trip to Stratford-upon-Avon and Year 9 to go to London.

Staff and students were working tirelessly to put together the fundraising extravaganza, which took place last month.

Activities included a karaoke competition, an origami challenge and a penalty shootout against teachers. They also held sponsored silences, reads and spelling tests, as well as cakes sales, raffles and quizzes.

The school choir have already

raised £395 from a singathon at Morrisons and staff have raised £750 through a bowling event and a musical gig.

One teacher is running a marathon over several weeks to raise money for the cause.

Deputy head teacher, Clare Watson, said: “This is the second year we have done this and it’s proved to be a huge success. The students threw themselves into the task of raising the money with great gusto last year and we reached our target. They loved their school trips all the more for it. This year they’re even more enthusiastic.”

The school is also appealing to local businesses and the community to get behind the cause. Last year, builders J Tomlinson donated £1,800 while British Gypsum gave £1,000.

Creative students from Clifton’s Central College were honoured at the Young Creative Awards at the Nottingham Playhouse.

Central students were named winners in five categories, with a further seven receiving highly-commended awards.

Hundreds of people attended the awards, which aim to give people aged 13 to 24 who live, study or work in Nottingham the chance to show off their creative work, network with future employers and gain valuable industry experience and mentoring.

A record 350 young creatives submitted their work in 10 different categories this year to meet the 2016 theme of ‘Goals and Dreams’.

Nigel Cooke, chair of the Young Creative Awards, told The Local News: “The awards are all about inspiring, supporting and encouraging creativity in the young people of Nottingham.

“These awards are becoming one of the most exciting events in Nottingham’s creative calendar.

“Every year I am impressed by the creativity, talent and professionalism of our young people here in Nottingham. We are proud to shine a light on their imagination, skill and dedication.”

All of this year’s winners in each category received a cash prize of £100 and there will also be opportunities for mentoring, support or work experience from local creative businesses.

Central College principal, Malcolm Cowgill, said: “As in previous years, this was a really fantastic performance by our students and the staff supporting them.

“Well done to everybody involved and I am really looking forward to seeing some of the work at the end of year shows.”

DACIA has powered to huge success in the latest Auto Express Driver Power 2016 Awards, writes Robert Maddox.

The manufacturer of some of the best value cars around was voted the fourth best brand in the annual honours with the capacious and versatile Logan MCV estate topping the Best Family Car category.

The ‘shockingly affordable’ brand recorded a score of 90.43 per cent overall as the feedback of satisfied owners helped the manufacturer maintain a top five place in the survey for a third consecutive year. Altogether 32 brands were ranked in the study.

The Romanian manufacturer’s Sandero, Duster and Logan MCV cars have won legions of fans through being the lowest-priced in their sectors by far. In the case of the Logan MCV that I’ve been

driving there’s no other car on the market which offers more space for your money than this roomy estate because you can drive away a new example of the model for under £7,000.

Together with the Duster, priced from £9,495, and the Sandero, starting at £5,995, it’s available

through Bristol Street Motors new Renault dealership at Haydn Road in Sherwood.

These are not only cars which are a good deal cheaper than their main competition but you also get a great deal when it comes to equipment when buying a top version.

The ultimate Laureate example of the Logan MCV (its initials stand for Maximum Capacity Vehicle) has air conditioning, cruise control and powered windows all round as well as a raft of safety features. Yet, surprise, surprise, an 898cc Laureate Logan can be yours for under £10,000.

Dacia Logan MCV

Best Family CarGold Winner

Ok, the Logan MCV is not the most sophisticated vehicle on the market. You don’t get soft-feel dashboard trim in this car, its seats are very much old-school and its styling is far removed from the lifestyle estates that are so popular but, eh, if you are looking for a good honest workhorse it’s a vehicle with a lot to offer.

This is a car designed to offer maximum space for minimum outlay and it’s one of the most practical family estates around as it lives up to its description as a Maximum Capacity Vehicle with a boot that goes beyond shaming its supermini sector classmates by offering the carrying capacity of a much larger Volvo V70.

Carrying capacity is 573 litres with

rear seats in place, growing to an astonishing 1,518 litres when they’re folded, and owners enjoy a wide and flat load deck. This is almost 42inches (105cm) long by 53inches (134cm) at its widest point when the seats are in place, so ample room for carrying small items of furniture or lots of luggage.

Fold the seats and you get a deck that’s 63ins (160cm) long. Then push the front passenger seat forward and you can carry items more than two foot in length. All versions have a 60/40 split folding rear bench. A reasonably low sill makes for easy loading.

Great news for keen cyclists or campers is that every model comes with longitudinal roof bars and these are finished in satin chrome in the case of the Laureate version tested.

Like the Sandero supermini, the Logan is made all the more attractive thanks to Dacia having collared some of the best engines and technology the Renault group has to offer.

The MCV’s power plants include

the 898cc TCe 90 turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine that’s also found in the new Renault Clio but without the added expense of Stop&Start technology. It’s also offered with Renault’s tried-and-tested 1.2-lire petrol burner and the top-selling 1.5 diesel, in 90hp form.

The 1.5-litre diesel powered the Logan MCV I drove and proved extremely frugal by returning more than 54mpg in general running. Up to 74.3mpg has been achieved on the combined cycle during official testing. C02 emissions of just 99 g/km mean exemption from road tax and reduced bills for company car drivers.

This engine is reasonably quiet and delivers good mid-range pulling power, which is good news when using the MCV’s load capacity to the full. Reduced gear-changing is another benefit.

I found the MCV to be an exceedingly practical and most likeable car. It’s every inch a Maximum Capacity Vehicle thanks to its huge boot. It also offers ample space for five adults. No

other new car in its sector of the market gives the owner so much space for such a reasonable outlay.

Drivers not put off by its functional styling also enjoy a car that belies its budget pricing by the way it drives. Supple suspension does a good job in soaking up the bumps and the car feels stable at speed.

The range includes Access and Ambiance versions as well as the top-spec Laureate cars with all having anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control and four airbags.

Dacias are sold with a three-year/60,000 miles warranty. An extended warranty for five years/60,000 miles is available for £395, with seven-year cover running to 100,000 miles being £850.

04 NK MOTORS: BUYERS GUIDE

THE quality of Kia’s offerings help NK Motors consistently soar to success – cars like the latest Sportage.

It’s easy to believe for a moment that the market for compact SUVs hasn’t changed all that much in the last ten years, but it’s now radically different – and the biggest beneficiary of these changes have been Kia, more specifically its Sportage.

Ten years ago, you could pick up a new entry-level Land Rover Freelander for under £16,000. Nowadays the Freelander’s

Discovery Sport replacement would set you back £30,000-plus.

What it all means is that a huge number of buyers are being priced out of the SUV market. That’s something Kia not only recognised but also put itself in prime position to capitalise on with its impressive fourth-generation Sportage.

It now gets a smarter look inside and out, greater practicality and a range of technologies to improve comfort, convenience, connectivity and safety. If you’re buying a small SUV or a Qashqai- like crossover, it’s worth a look.

Go for the T-GDI variant and you get the option of the brand’s latest seven-speed DCT dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Most Sportage buyers, though, want a diesel. The range starts with a 115PS 1.7-litre CRDi variant. Above that, there’s a 2.0-litre CRDi option, offered with a choice of 136PS or 184PS power outputs. Whatever engine you decide upon, you should find that refinement levels have been much improved over the third-generation model.

The front end of this latest Sportage is the biggest change over the outgoing model, thanks to smarter headlamps that sit just above a bolder, lower, wider version of Kia’s hallmark tiger-nose grille.

These lights are now positioned higher, sweeping back along the outer edges of the sharply-detailed bonnet.

The result is a more imposing appearance and a more stable-looking stance, despite this model retaining the same 1,855mm width as its predecessor.

It’s 40mm longer, though, and more aerodynamic.

Inside, there’s a completely new interior, with higher-quality materials and a central console that cascades downwards and is tilted 10 degrees towards the driver.

The 30mm increase in this model’s wheelbase means that the cabin is more spacious, with greater headroom front and rear.

At the back, the seats recline further than before for greater long-distance comfort. Out back, bootspace is up from the previous model’s 465-litre total to 503 litres.

The new KIA Sportage

Jeep has become the first automotive manufacturer to drive a car up and down an Olympic-standard white water course

Jeep and Red Bull ambassador Aimee Fuller piloted the Renegade on its maiden voyage at the Cardiff International White Water Centre

Olympic snowboarder Aimee successfully battled four tonnes of water per second and a 30 foot drop on the 250 metre course

Jeep has once again showcased its legendary 4x4 driving credentials by becoming the world’s first automotive manufacturer to drive a car up and down an Olympic-standard white water rafting course.

Jeep and Red Bull ambassador Aimee Fuller guided the Jeep Renegade Trailhawk on the thrilling challenge at Cardiff’s International

White Water Centre.

The Renegade and Olympic snowboarder Aimee tackled extreme off-road conditions as they went up and down the 250 metre long course, battling a flow of water that exceeded four tonnes per

second and a descent of more than 30 feet from top to bottom.

“I’d never done anything like this before so when I arrived and saw the power and heard the noise of the water I was nervous,” said 24-year-old Aimee.

“But once I had driven into the course and got through the first few rapids the car felt great, really in control, and I started to relax and enjoy it.

“It’s a pretty cool thing to say I was the first person ever to drive a car down a white water rafting course, not something you do every day.”

Damien Dally, head of brand, Jeep UK, said: “We are always looking for unusual ways to demonstrate how good our cars are in extreme off-road conditions and driving the Renegade down a white water rafting course successfully has certainly showcased that.

“We are proud to say we are the first automotive manufacturer to achieve the feat of driving up and down white water rapids and that the stunt truly embodied the spirit of the car; of being renegade.”

VOLKSWAGEN has taken the wraps off an all-new Tiguan to signal the start of a comprehensive offensive which will eventually see the brand represented in all core SUV segments.

UK dealers including Vertu Volkswagen at Loughborough Road, West Bridgeford, Nottingham have this month started deliveries of the model and there’s little doubt that it’s going to be another sales hit for the brand as compact SUVs are in big demand.

UK sales of these chunky high riders have increased by 140% during the past ten years with those of the Tiguan reaching 21,889 units in 2015 against 8,121 just four years before. Only the Golf and Polo are more popular in the VW’s UK line-up.

In updating the model, Volkswagen boasts that it is bringing previously

unseen levels of quality and refine-ment to the compact SUV sector with a premium look and feel that belie its price.

It’s the first new Volkswagen SUV to sit on the brand’s innovative and flexible new platform which also un-derpins the class-leading Golf and is being offered with an extended engine range giving customers the greatest possible range of choices for power, style and comfort.

A broad line-up includes vehicles with new 4MOTION Active Control which allows drivers to adjust the all-wheel-drive system to all possible driving conditions. Expect to pay from £27,130 for a 4x4 example while other versions are available from around £22,500 on the road. There are S, SE, SE Navi-gation, SEL and R-Line versions

Owners will enjoy class-leading levels of interior space, practicality

and safety along with cutting-edge technology and connectivity.

Exceptional levels of safety are thanks to it sharing the cut-ting-edge platform of the Golf. All versions feature Front Assist with City Emergency Braking and Pedestrian Monitoring; Lane Assist, plus automatic post-collision braking system helping to avoid dangerous secondary collisions. High technology includes a head-up display, Area View and Trailer Assist.

The model is lower than the out-going Tiguan but wider and longer

with the wheelbase significantly extended, bringing greater legroom as well as 145 litres more cargo space when the rear bench is folded. The boot provides 615 litres of space when the rear bench is slid forwards highlighting the new Volkswagen’s practicality is a towing capacity of up to 2,500 kg, which is exceptional for a compact SUV.

In the UK the car will over time be offered with up to three new petrol engines, with power outputs from 125 PS to 180 PS, and four new diesel engines ranging from 115 PS to 240 PS.

HONDA has retuned to the compact SUV sector in style with a new HR-V that’s one of the best-looking compact SUVs on the market.

Here is an all-new crossover car blending coupe-like styling with the tough, solid stance of a robust SUV and it’s dramatically different to the original HR-V, on sale in the UK from 1999 to 2005.

The heat is certainly on Renault, Nissan and Vauxhall who have driven into the supermini SUV sector since the demise of the first-generation HR-V because the new Honda doesn’t simply represent very stylish transport but also offers class-leading boot space.

What’s more, it shares Honda’s highly practical Magic Seats system with the Jazz supermini so owners enjoy numerous loading configurations.

Carrying capacity is 453 litres with the rear seats up and 1,026 litres when they’re folded.

Take your pick from S, SE, SE Nav and EX versions priced from £18,495 and available in Nottingham through Vertu Honda at Lenton Lane. They are powered by either an all-new 130 PS 1.5 litre i-VTEC petrol engine or a 120 PS 1.6 litre i-DTEC diesel. CO2 emissions are as low as 104 g/km. For drivers seeking an easier life at the wheel there are CVT, petrol-engined cars with a newly developed automatic transmission using software which simulates seven speeds and provides optimised gear change mapping.

Climate control, cruise control and dusk-sensing automatic headlamps are fitted as standard even on S-grade cars while extra features of SE versions include rain-sensing wipers, front and rear parking sensors and a six-speaker audio upgrade.

Top-grade EX examples further have a full leather interior, smart entry and start, and a rear-view camera. They are also distinguished by a unique-in-class, tilt-and-slide opening panoramic glass sunroof, plus 17-inch alloy wheels.

The Honda Connect in-car infotainment system of SE and EX cars is an Android-based system featuring an app-based ‘pinch, swipe and tap‘ interface accessed on a seven-inch touchscreen in the centre of the dashboard. Pre-installed apps give rapid access to internet-based services such as web browsing, real-time traffic information, news and weather, social media, and internet music stations.

A maximum, five-star Euro NCAP safety rating has followed Honda’s decision to equip every new HR-V sold in Europe with the brand’s City-Brake Active System. SE and EX models also have Honda’s Advanced Driver Assist System, which uses radar sensors, plus forward- and rear-facing cameras in giving owners a comprehensive suite of active safety technologies including forward collision warning, traffic sign recognition, an intelligent speed limiter, a lane departure warning system, an a high-beam support system.

Honda returns to the compact SUV market with the new HR-V

Local martial arts instructor Lucci Del-Gaudio has made sporting history once again after picking up two major honours at the British Martial Arts awards ceremony last month.

The 40-year-old from Clifton managed to fend off stiff competition to win the ‘Community-based Martial Artist’ and best ‘Seminar of the Year’ awards in a historic evening at the Lilleshall National Sports & Conference Centre in Telford.

Mr Gaudio was nominated for his fifth award in three years by members of the British Martial Arts association, following his endless efforts in fundraising towards children’s cancer charities and helping the public learn how to self-defend themselves in violate situations.

The awards are designed to acknowledge and celebrate the success and contributions that instructors from across the country have given to the world of Martial Arts and their local communities.

Lucci has been a mentor for students in Combat Ju-Jitsu, a traditional Japanese Jujitsu, for over 25 years at the Highbank Community Centre in Clifton.

He has also appeared in several seminars across the UK involving some of the country’s top self-

defence instructors. Through his unique teaching style and carefully designed self-defence courses, Lucci has significantly helped to train vulnerable residents on how best to stay say safe on the streets.

The highly-regarded coach, who originally began training in

Shotokan Karate, was delighted to win the awards and cement his place in martial arts history.

He said: “It’s an unreal feeling. To be nominated for these awards alone is amazing.

“Spending the evening with the best martial artists in the country and with Hollywood movie stars such as Don ‘The Dragon’ Wilson was also a great experience.

“Winning these awards are by far the highlight of my martial arts career. This one is particularly special for me because they were voted by the people and not by individuals.

“We have helped over a hundred kids within the NG11 area with not just our training methods, but with other important life qualities like how to overcome bullying.

“With our clubs in Clifton and Silverdale, we will soon be starting a ladies’ combative class that will include lessons which will teach how to self defend against most common attacks, as well as kick boxing and general fitness.”

Phil Crompton, CEO of The Trent Academies Group, which oversees Farnborough, believes trips are an important part of children’s educational experience.

He explained: “School trips often form some of our most special memories of school.

“But evidence shows they also have a positive impact on academic results as well as on students’ confidence and leadership skills.

“The fundraiser is a really creative way to make sure all our pupils can benefit from these experiences and it’s a welcome breath of fresh air for parents weary of just receiving letters home asking for money.”

Pupils at the school agree with Mr Crompton’s views.

Onyx Milns, in Year 7, said: “The fundraising is a good idea as all year groups get to do it together so we can all enjoy a school trip.

“I also like it because there is a variety of events going on, I especially like the ones that the

teachers take part in.”

Kayne Mather, also in Year 7, added: “I think it’s fair that we should do fundraising, so we can get the opportunity to go on a school trip together as a year group. I’m really excited and looking forward to going to the Peak District with my friends. I have never been anywhere like it before. It’s going to be an adventure for me.”

Nottingham Trent University, which has a campus in Clifton, has been officially named as the best in the UK for international students at the Whatuni Student Choice Awards and ranked in the top 10 universities overall.

The university managed to take home the WUSCA in the international category in its first-ever appearance at the awards ceremony, held earlier this month.

Nottingham Trent was also named among the top 10 in the University of the Year category.

Overall, out of 125 universities that were nominated, NTU was ranked in an impressive seventh position, with the title being won by Bangor University.

The rankings, which are now in their third year, are based on thousands of reviews submitted by students and published on the Whatuni website.

Editor of Hotcourses International, Katie Duncan, said: “Having a diverse student population made up of international students is an

increasing priority for universities in the UK.

“Not only are these students exceptionally driven and talented, but they also bring an enriching cultural experience for domestic students and staff.

“Nottingham Trent has demonstrated that it is a deserving winner of the international award by offering continuous support through platforms such as live chat and options like university preparation courses to help international

students get the most out of their abroad experience.”

Professor and pro vice-chancellor, Nigel Healey, said he was delighted the views of overseas students had led to a win in the international category.

“At Nottingham Trent University, we have put internationalism at the heart of our new strategy, Creating the University of the Future,” he said.

“We have worked hard to welcome international students to our city, encourage home students to learn from them and celebrate our international diversity on campus.

“I am thrilled this work has been recognised by the WhatUni award.”

Vice president of Community at the NTU Student Union Zaz Prosser said she was pleased that the universities work around engaging and supporting international students had been recognised with the award.

“We hold a number of events throughout Fresher’s week and in the run up to it for students who arrive earlier during the summer break,” she said.

“This is to ensure that there are a number of opportunities for international students to get involved and feel more comfortable when starting at Nottingham Trent University.

“We have also built some strong links with the Global Lounge.

“This is in order to increase the accessibility of the Union to new international students.”

Nottingham Trent Uni named ‘best in UK’ for international studies

Clifton athlete Louis O’Connor has won gold in the 400 metres at the recent Nottinghamshire County Athletics Championships.

Louis is an A-Level pupil at Rushcliffe School in West Bridgford.

The competition was held at Harvey Hadden Stadium in Bilborough on the weekend of the 14th and 15th of May.

Not only did the talented 18-year-old Notts AC athlete become county champion, he also broke into the UK top 10 for under-20 at 400m.

This stunning result means that Louis has automatically qualified for the English Schools Championships for the second year running.

These championships are held in July at Gateshead International Stadium and the meeting pits the best athletes each county has against each other for the chance to represent England.

On the back of this fantastic success, Louis has also been given a unconditional university place at Nottingham Trent.

He will be studying for a degree in finance and accounts, as well as representing the university at national level.

Slimming World is now into its third year of supporting Cancer Research shops.

The local shops, which are located in the Clifton, West Bridgford and Radcliffe-on-Trent areas, get involved with a wonderful ‘Clothes Throw’.

Shedding those extra pounds has meant we all end up with clothes that are too big for us.

What better way to dispose of them than to know that they are being given to a good cause.

Cancer is an area that has touched the lives of most of us.

Every bag is carefully sorted and recycled to help raise funds for Cancer Research.

Slimming World are aiming to raise fantastic amount of £2 million.

All members have been able to donate to this more than worthy cause by losing weight healthily and by eating plenty of filling, good and normal foods.

This even includes those treats that we would miss if they were not included.

We meet lots of new friends and learn to eat in a healthier way.

You can still have your favourite fish and chips, curry or good old English Breakfast and watch the weight come off.

Both Clifton and West Bridgford have six groups each from Monday to Saturday.

Visit the Slimming World website slimmingworld.co.uk to see the times and places.

We can change the way we think and communicate, with ourselves and with others.

We can de-traumatise past events, change limiting beliefs that keep us from doing the things that we want.

There are reasons for all our behaviours and these can be both good and bad.

We can access our subconscious mind and discover the root cause for many of our problems.

Then we can change our behaviours and responses in those situations where we want change to occur and take control of our lives.

Don’t just let life happen. You need to make it be the way you want it to be.

Unfortunately we can’t change other people but we can change ourselves and move forward towards the future we really want.

Ever heard the phrase “life is not a destination, it’s a journey?”

Enjoy the ride!

As spring changes into summer it may come as a surprise that it is not too late for Nottingham’s premier, local, independent lawn company Prograss to come and make a real difference to your lawn in time for the summer season.

An instant improvement can be seen after just one treatment and with each subsequent treatment we can further move the lawn forward, improving it with every visit.

How we do this is quite simple. The first treatment requirements will be to start dealing with what we don’t want in the lawn, which will be weeds, thatch and moss. We would then work on what we do want, which is the existing healthy grass and the aim is to green, strengthen and thicken it, so it starts to out-compete the weeds and moss, rather than the other way round.

It is important to remember grass is a plant and like any plant, if you give it food and nutrients it will respond positively. The result is always an immediate improvement in the lawn. The commercial products that Prograss use are among the highest quality available and are child and pet-friendly.

If mechanical work (hollow tine aeration and scarification) is required, this can be delayed until the autumn, so as to not disrupt the lawns appearance too much while you are using it for most in the summer. Hollow tine aeration is done using a machine which extract thousands of plugs out of the lawn. This reduces the compaction of the lawn opening up the root zone, allowing food, water and nutrients into the soil.

The grass roots then go down for the food, water and nutrients and like any plant a plant with a strong root is usually a healthy plant.

Scarification is done using a machine which has a powerful motorised rake and its aim is again to take out what we don’t want in the lawn, moss and thatch, and leave in what we do want which is the healthy grass.

Scrarifying properly is a highly skilled job as the blades have to be

set at the right height. Too high and not enough is taken out, too low and severe damage can be done to the lawn.

Club members, boys and girls from age six to 18+ in the Dunkirk and surrounding localities of Clifton, Meadows, West Bridgford, Wollaton and Wilford, are set to get a refurbished and improved club house, thanks to a £50,000 grant from funding body WREN.

The money, awarded by WREN’s FCC Community Action Fund, will be used to provide, improved disabled access, sustainable and cost effective heating of the building by way of solar panels, improved roof insulation, refurbished kitchen and bathroom facilities and improving all communal areas of the Dunkirk club house on Thane Road, Lenton.

Committee chairman Steve Harbottle, of Dunkirk Sports and Social Club, believes the facility will make a huge difference.

“This project will provide a real boost to the people of Dunkirk and the surrounding areas,” he said.

“It’s fantastic that WREN has awarded us this money and we’re

really looking forward to our clubhouse taking shape over the next four months.

We hope the refurbished and improved clubhouse will be ready to use by 1st August and look forward to welcoming the local community to the event.”

WREN is a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community, biodiversity and heritage projects from funds donated by FCC Environment through the Landfill Communities Fund.

Cheryl Raynor, WREN’s grant manager for Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, said: “We are delighted to be supporting Dunkirk Sports and Social Club and pleased that our funding will help to refurbish this well-used and much-loved facility.

“WREN is always happy to consider grant applications for projects that make a difference to local communities and we’re really looking forward to seeing this one take shape soon.”

20 SPORT The latest news is online @Nottslocalnews

Former pro footballers David Norton and Mark Draper are set to start the Draper Norton Football Apprenticeship Academy (DNF) across the East Midlands this summer, with the launch taking place in Clifton. This grass-roots academy will deliver apprenticeships for 16 to 18 year olds and offer players a unique entry route to a sports education pathway or a professional career in football.

Through relationships with professional league and non-league clubs and a Major League Soccer team, graduates of DNF could find themselves realising their dreams of being a pro footballer in the UK or oversees. Priding themselves on equal opportunities, the programme will be free of any charges and instead will pay players a national apprenticeship wage, whilst gifting them with a complete Macron training kit.

Kicking off with trials this month, those lucky enough to be selected will find themselves with an unmatched opportunity to follow their dreams. Not only will players earn whilst they learn, but they will also train at Nottingham Trent University’s Clifton Campus, which

boasts brand new, first-class facilities. As a result, players will be given early insight to a university environment thus making for an education experience like no other.

The programme has been founded on the principle that to learn how to play football, players must immerse themselves in all aspects of football. Through a combination of practical pitch time, and academic learning, which incorporates nutrition, physiotherapy and psychology, the programme will equip learners with a holistic understanding of the sport. This all-inclusive framework will teach

players the skill, knowledge and attitude to succeed in their chosen field and offers its graduates the choice to pursue a career as a pro footballer, or to further their education within football or sport more broadly.

Former Aston Villa and Notts County defender, David Norton, said: “I was fortunate to have experienced a top-class apprenticeship with Aston Villa from 1981 to 1983. It was a very challenging experience to gain a pro contract at 18, but I succeeded not only with my ability but the attitude to learn and commit myself

totally. I’m now in the privileged position to help pass on that experience and knowledge to the players who want to succeed in their chosen career.”

Former Aston Villa & Notts County midfielder, Mark Draper, said: “My career spans 18 years as a professional footballer playing in some of the best stadiums and players in the world and under some of the top managers of their time including Glenn Hoddle, Brian Little and Neil Warnock. Talent is only half of it. They have to have the right attitude and through my years of experience, I aim to ensure players are fully prepared for a professional career at the top.”

Former Forest forward, Stan Collymore, said: “I believe talent at all levels should be nurtured and we should make concerted efforts to ensure players receive the recognition they deserve. Mark and Dave have created a model which allows them to pass on a wealth of knowledge to youngsters wanting to be where they’ve been and, to me, that is an educational opportunity like no other.”
