A public-private partnership, a platform for the railsector as a whole to work together to drive innovationin the years to come until 2024
The S2R Joint Undertaking has been created in June 2014 to play amajor role in rail-related research and innovation, ensuringcoordination among projects and providing all stakeholders with

coordination among projects and providing all stakeholders withrelevant and available information on projects funded across Europe.It shall also manage all rail- focused research and innovation actionsco-funded by the UnionCouncil Regulation (EU) No 642/2014 of 16 June 2014 (S2R Regulation)
It reached autonomy in May 2016, it is now fullyoperational

Shift2Rail represent a powerfulinstrument to complement andsupport the establishment of theSingle European Railway Areaand contribute to meeting theambitious objectives of the EUtransport policy.
Shift2Rail objectives
• Achieve the Single European RailwayArea through the removal of remainingtechnical obstacles holding back the railsector in terms of interoperability;
• Radically enhance the attractiveness andcompetitiveness of the European railwaysystem to ensure a modal shift towardsrail;
• Help the European rail industry to retainand consolidate its leadership on theglobal market for rail products andservices.

The Shift2Rail FrameworkFrom policy objectives to concrete activities
• The general objectives of the Shift2Rail JointUndertaking are described in the Shift2RailRegulation, adopted on 16 June 2014
• The S2R Master Plan translates the generalobjectives into specific objectives, providing ahigh-level strategic vision to achieve them and

high-level strategic vision to achieve them andidentifying key priority research areas
• The S2R Multiannual Action Plan (MAAP),provides a detailed, long-term investment planthat concretely identifies the projects, milestonesand deliverables to achieve the Master Planobjectives
• The Annual Work Plans translate the S2R MAAPinto detailed, result-oriented activity plans andserve as the basis for identifying the JU calls

IN2SMART – S2R key expected outcome
Project started on September 1. 16,4M€ value (7,3M€ funding)
Scope :
• Identify, measure and collect data/information related to the status of therail infrastructural assets
• Manage heterogeneous data/information of railway infrastructural assetsthrough open, standardised, seamless and secure approaches.
• Investigate intelligent asset management and execution strategies
17
• Investigate intelligent asset management and execution strategies
Expected impact :
Reduction in the recurrent costs of rail operations within a range of 25-45%.Taking the context of the work streams into account, the lower operating costswill evolve from reductions maintenance costs (~25%) and increases inreliability of operation (~20%). Furthermore lean implementation strategies mayamount up to 30% of total costs
IN2TRACK – S2R key expected outcome
Project started on September 1. 6,3M€ (2,8M€ funding)
Scope :
• Methods for improved prediction, monitoring and mitigation ofdeterioration and lateral instability of rails and switches & crossings;
• For bridges and tunnels inspection technology with capability of detectingdamages at early stage. Methods for improving performance of bridges andtunnels;
• Noise and vibrations, both rolling noise and squeal noise and the impact of

• Noise and vibrations, both rolling noise and squeal noise and the impact ofdifferent innovative solutions on generation, translation and emission ofnoise;
Expected impact :
• Contribute to tracks and civil structures by increasing the lifetime,decreasing traffic disturbances, and identifying new solutions for tracks,switches & crossings, bridges and tunnels
• Decreased noise and vibration impact
S-CODE – S2R key expected outcome
Project started on November 1. 5M€ value and funding
