LIASA OFFICE NEWS
“The year 2020 was not twenty plenty as expected”, said one of the Representative Council members. Since the lockdown in March 2020, the Executive Committee and the Representative Council have had about 15 virtual meetings including special and extraordinary meetings to date. Despite the connectivity and data challenges, the Association continues to strive towards operating under difficult conditions.
The National Office continued to operate virtually with a few ad hoc visits to the physical building when necessary. The LNO hosted about 13 Webinars or online workshops to date on behalf of Branches and Interest Groups on the virtual platform. Out of these, a total of 929 registrations was received and 809 attended the live webinars. In addition, there was a total of 899 views of the webinars on the LIASA’s YouTube channel, LIASANews.

MEMBERSHIP
The pandemic and the lockdown have negatively impacted on the membership numbers. There were 1345 paid-up members as at 10 November 2020. Thus far, LIASA has not been able to reach the membership number of 2020 for this year as envisaged. You are still encouraged to renew your membership online and join the SAQA Professional Body to continue receiving the benefits and remain eligible for your Professional Body designation.

ICT Survey
The LIASA Executive engaged with members on their respective ICT environments to inform and develop a more effective strategy during the various COVID-19 levels and beyond so that LIASA can continue to serve its members constructively and efficiently. LIASA required information about the access that members have to ICT infrastructure to determine their potential access to LIASA events such as training sessions, meetings, virtual conferences etc.
The input to this audit will help LIASA to improve on current offerings and will assist with finding ways to reach members most effectively. The survey ran
from 9 to 24 July 2020.
Some key findings are:
During the lockdown period, 61% of respondents were home-based, with 11% having to continue working at their respective places of employment, while the remainder had the option of both or making use of alternative loca-tions such as Internet Cafés.
50% of respondents indicated that their employers provided for ICT equipment, with 37% having to make use of their own equipment. The survey results furthermore suggested that the majority of respondents made use of a laptop or desktop, while also having access via a smartphone. Most respondents had to provide for their own connectivity, and this speaks to the willingness of our members to engage on LIASA matters at their own cost.

SAJLIS
The Editor-in-Chief is gearing up for the publication of the 2nd issue of SAJLIS for 2020. At present, there is still some catching up to do due to the backlog that was created when the Journal had no editor, and it is intended that this backlog will be cleared by 2021.
There continues to be some concerns about the inclusion of SAJLIS on the DHET list as members do not see it there. SAJLIS is part of the SciELO platform and as such is automatically a part of the DHET list as long as we comply with SciELO requirements, which the journal certainly does.
In conclusion…
This term has not been easy but we have tried to fulfil our mandate while we adapt to the “new normal” way of working. We should congratulate ourselves for keeping the lights on for the Association despite the unprecedented challenges. Let us stay at home and continue to observe the Level 1 regulations since this pandemic is still very much alive!

Dear LIASA colleagues
I write to you from an unprecedented position as the LIASA President whose
term of office was disrupted by the SARS-CoV-2 virus and who will therefore recoup the time lost from the coming year.
LIASA has faced the same violent turmoil as other organisations throughout the world. At such times, brave leadership is required. Martin Luther King Jr observed: “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” Decisive leadership was needed and hard decisions were made this year guided by the LIASA principles that require all voices to be heard. Because of this, the 2020 AGM was not held but rather a Special General Meeting will be called before the end of the year so that the governance principles of accountability and transparency at least may be serviced through information-sharing with LIASA members. The LIASA 2018-2020 Presidential term will be spread over three years, recouping from 2021 the time lost in 2020 due to the global pandemic. I wish to

It has not been easy and some colleagues were unable to stay in office – we received several resignations during this year – and we express our gratitude for their efforts.
The LIS sector remains largely sequestered in keeping with global and national avoidance responses to COVID-19. Libraries and information centres provide communal and social spaces which, together with browsing, provide many ways to spread the virus, hence the deployment of limited services which preclude such activities. Much concern has been expressed about this and LIASA’s role. We will continue to advocate for libraries to be accorded their place in the development agenda given their importance to the development of communities. Alongside this position is the pragmatic view that this country remains in a national state of disaster and we are legally and ethically bound to adhere to the regulations and therefore accept the restrictions that these bring. It is incumbent on LIASA and its members to find creative and innovative ways to provide LIS services to the public. We call on you to share your stories in this regard in the LIASA-in-Touch.
Conference 2020 was another COVID-19 casualty so we were delighted to receive the news, a bit out of the blue, that the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture was able to respond positively to a previous LIASA application for conference funding. It was far too late to arrange the usual annual LIASA conference and in any case, the
decision to cancel that event had been made a few months before. Still, we gathered a group of practitioners whose experience of setting up LIASA conferences was as deep as their professional experience and as the programme committee exceeded in all aspects the brief I had provided. The inaugural LIASA Virtual Indaba that retained the theme of the cancelled 2020 conference, LIASA: Disrupted, was lauded on many fronts for the depth of content that showcased the myriad of socio-economic-political considerations entwined in the LIS sector. Hot topics foregrounded the role of libraries, the shortcomings within the sector, and provided a tapestry of rich debate that needs to be explored further post-Indaba.
Mandates from the membership via the 2019 and earlier AGMs to the current Executive Committee had to take a backseat due to COVID-19 restrictions. It is anticipated that as the lockdown eases, we will be re-initiating the many plans intended to have been rolled out in 2020, for execution in the first quarter of 2021. One of these projects is the LIASA Academy. The importance of CPD and of presenting the right types of learning to nurture new cohorts of leaders were expounded on in the Indaba. Kindness, compassion and self-care are among the new skills needed by professionals alongside steward leadership attributes of caring for the community. LIASA is mandated via the SAQA Professional Body award to contribute to the skills development nationally and in the sector; and to lead the exercise of professionalism in LIS. The LIASA Academy that follows on from the previously successful South African Library Leadership Project (SALLP) that produced many of the leaders in LIASA and in the
practice will be launched in the first quarter (Q1) of 2021. We intend producing more leaders especially of the type described by Martin Luther King Jr as “A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus but a molder of consensus.” Dr King observed further that “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character — that is the goal of true education.” These thoughts encapsulate the intentions of the LIASA Academy.
We enter the last couple of months of 2020 having had to deal with a year that no one could have predicted; with weariness, ‘COVID-19 fatigue’ and sadness for the many losses experienced by ourselves and others. Let us continue to practice kindness and compassion towards each other and ourselves and keep in mind Dr King’s encouragement that “…whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” LIASA will prevail because of the indomitable strength of yourselves, its members, and we will continue to do as the African proverb advises “If you wish to move mountains tomorrow, you must start by lifting stones today”.
I thank each one for your ongoing commitment to LIASA. Continue with all the COVID-19 avoidance practices of social distancing, sanitising regularly, washing hands, wearing masks in publics places as legally required and so on. On behalf of the Executive Committee and the Representative Council, I wish you all a peaceful end of year break and to those celebrating the Season, a Merry Christmas. To everyone, a Happy New Year - let 2021 be good for all of us.

The University of Zululand registered nine delegates for the LIASA 2020 Virtual Indaba – five
full time Library staff, three Seta Interns for the Library and one staff member from the Education Faculty Resource Centre.
All delegates attended
using their laptops, but were seated together in the Library eClassroom, where the session was also broadcast on our MAXHUB screen. UNIZULU
Library provided a goodie bag as well as morning tea and lunch.
