ZEL-RAIL
Organizers of EUROTRANS fairagreed on cooperation
Organizers of EUROTRANS fairagreed on cooperation with organi-
zers of the Slovak ZEL-RAIL ex-hibition. As a result, they will work
together on the next years edition
of EUROTRANS, when ZEL-RAILmoves to the Brno Exhibition Cen-
tre.
ZEL-RAIL, an information & con-tracting exhibition of products and
services for railways and transport,
is a traditional Slovak exhibition
title with a history of more than ten
editions over the past 17 years. ZEL-RAIL is the founder and organizer
of the rst exhibition focused on railtransport in the Slovak Republic andCentral Europe. The edition in 2011was attended by nearly 80 exhibitors.A part of the exhibition is also a pro-
fessional conference.
Following discussions between BVVTrade Fairs Brno and the organizersof ZEL-RAIL, it was agreed that
both parties would join their forces
to develop a trade fair project dedi-
cated to rail transport. In 2013, thistraditional and successful product
will be set into the framework of
the EUROTRANS fair project asRAIL-TEC/ZEL-RAIL. The projectfollows on and refers to the previous
editions of ZEL-RAIL in the SlovakRepublic. The agreement laid a verysolid foundation for the rolling stock
industry branch at EUROTRANSfair and re-afrmed the Czech-Slo-vak character of the entire project.
Both parties declare their interest in
a long-term cooperation.
A professional conference on thetheme of rail transport also moves to
Brno. The Brno Exhibition Centre is
an ideal venue for the presentation of
rolling stock and railway topics in ge-
neral, because in addition to a propri-
etary railway siding and a marshalling
yard, it also provides plentiful top-
quality indoor and outdoor exhibition
space and good conference facilities.
Based on discussions within the Ex-
hibition Committee, the schedule
of EUROTRANS was nally set toWednesday 11 to Saturday 14 Sep-tember. The opening on Saturday
deadline will facilitate visit to EU-
ROTRANS for small entrepreneursand also the general public, which
is convenient for exhibitors who are
directly involved in rail passenger
transport in the time of competition
entering the Czech railways.
The EUROTRANS InternationalTransport Fair is a new title at the
Brno Exhibition Center, for the rsttime to take place on 11 to 14 Sep -tember 2013 and then in a two-yearcycle. Its key nomenclatures are
road and rail transport and logistics.
EUROTRANS includes the existingAUTOTEC and Transport & Logi-stics fairs, newly adding rail trans-
port under the brand RAIL-TEC/ZEL-RAIL.
BVV Trade Fairs Brno
Joint statement about EUROTRANStrade fair concept
BVV Trade Fairs Brno is currentlypreparing a new transport fair titled
EUROTRANS, which will takeplace for the rst time in Septem-ber 2013 under the patronage of theCzech Ministry of Transport and
the Confederation of Industry of the
Czech Republic. This trade fair con-cept is based on the traditional AU-
TOTEC and TRANSPORT ANDLOGISTICS shows, which will becomplemented by a railway trans-
port sector exhibition titled RAIL-TEC. The EUROTRANS fair willalso include a railway technology
exhibition titled EL-RAIL. Thisevent has a 17-year-long tradition inthe Slovakian town of Vrtky and itsintroduction in Brno demonstrates
the partner cooperation documenting
the Czech Slovak character of this
trade show.
Introducing domestic as well as in-
ternational manufacturers of utility
vehicles and buses, their groups and
parts and technological equipment for
servicing along with the presentation
of road and railway transport inclu-
ding related logistics and services are
based on the demand and analyses of
the current Czech and European ex-
hibition market. By joining all trans-
port and logistics related sectors in a
single trade fair, the fair can offer a
comprehensive view of the industry,
which is advantageous both for the
exhibitors as well as experts and
other visitors.
The below listed professional orga-
nisations and other entities involvedin the preparation committee of the
EUROTRANSfair consider thisnew project in the CR as unique andof priority interest in terms of the
participation. Therefore, they have
decided to provide a public support
to the EUROTRANS fair via thisStatement and recommend the par-
ticipation in this trade fair to their
members as well as all companies
and organisations that are engaged
in the sectors listed in the trade fair
nomenclature.
It is the view of all representatives
of the professional federations and
associations that the EURO-TRANS fair meets all conditionsfor offering efcient presentationto the exhibitors and for creating a
forum for professional exchange of
opinions and incentives for further
development of all transport-related
sectors, automotive industry, logi-
stic processes and related services. The EUROTRANS fair is the right
place for introducing innovations
and for addressing current sector
related issues including the support
of technical disciplines and techni-
cal education as one of the principal
pillars driving domestic economy.

Railistics appoints Professor Lademann to its Advisory Board
Professor Dr.-Ing. Frank Lademann, railway expert at the Technical Uni-
versity of Central Hessen (THM)
was appointed to the Board of Railis-tics GmbH of Wiesbaden and Dessauon October 1st 2012. With his expe-rience from previous planning and
advisory activities, his wide ranging
business activities and long-standing
involvement in the Association of
German Railway Engineers (VDEI)he will support the future develop-
ment of Railistics GmbH. For THMhe will intensify the integration of
theory and practice.
Frank Lademann is responsible forthe rail systems and trafc enginee-
ring department within the Civil En-
gineering Department of THM. THM
with locations in Giessen, Friedbergand Wetzlar is currently one of thelargest universities in Germany with
nearly 14,000 students.Frank Lademann studied civil engi-neering with the specialization rail,
road and trafc engineering at theTechnical University of Darmstadt.
He then worked for a large enginee-
ring rm in Frankfurt, before retur-ning as a research assistant to TH
Darmstadt and completing his doc-
torate. His dissertation dealt with the
topic Evaluation of intersections on
single-track S- Bahn lines. After
another 5 years in an engineering of-ce, he moved to the University ofApplied Sciences Giessen-Friedberg(today THM) in 2004.With ofces in Dessau; Wiesbadenand Berlin, together with internati-
onal ofces in Budapest (Hungary),Bucharest (Romania) and Ankara(Turkey), Railistics provides profes-sional and independent consultancy
services in the areas of logistics, in-

CER urges Member States to support growth and jobs
The Community of European Rail-way and Infrastructure Companies
(CER) urges EU Member States andthe European Parliament to safeguard
the 32 billion EUR budget for trans-port infrastructure in the 2014-2020EU budget. Member States should
resist the temptation to protect tra-
ditional redistributive policies at the
expense of budget areas that generate
growth and jobs.
Meeting in Brussels on 22-23 No-vember, EU Heads of State will con-
tinue their intense negotiations on
the new on the Multiannual FinancialFramework (MFF) which will denethe EUs budget for the years 2014
to 2020. Overall, the railway sectorsupports the European Commissions
proposal on the Multiannual Fi-nancial Framework (MFF), whichemphasises policies with a high
European added value, such as the
Connecting Europe Facility (CEF),which is to nance infrastructure
projects in transport, energy and ICT.
In such programmes, investments at
the European level are particularly
useful due to their synergy effects.
Bottlenecks and missing links in the
transport system can be more effec-
tively addressed if investments are
coordinated at EU level.
The budget of EUR 32 billion (or
about 3% of the overall MFF) propo-sed by the Commission for transport
under CEF is realistic and necessaryin order to reach the targets the EU
has set itself in the area of transport.
As a minimum, the compromise pro-
posal presented by Council President
Herman van Rompuy, which securesEUR 29.660 billion for transport, should be supported.
CER Executive Director Libor Loch-man said: Achieving a sustainable, integrated and multi-modal transport
network, covering and interconnec-
ting all Member States and regions
must be seen as an essential invest-
ment in growth and jobs.
The 2nd edition has once again pro-ved that the congress is distinguis-
hed as the market leading logistics
and supply chain management event
for a reason. On 28th-29th Novem-ber, more than 500 senior decision-makers from 21 different Europeancountries gathered in Budapest to
exchange ideas and nd solutions forthe major challenges in logistics and
supply chain management.
The ve-star event took place in theequally prestigious Corinthia Grand
Hotel Royal, where delegates had thechance to meet Europes leading so-lution providers, offering a wide ran-
ge of solutions from transportation
to printing. Nearly 1500 one-to-one
business meetings were conductedduring the two days, all of which
were pre-scheduled on the online
TEG platform, the Meeting Schedu-
ler. The website has been one of the
most popular and useful features of
the event. As David Cuenca, the Ge-
neral Manager of CHEP commented
on it: The Meeting Scheduler wasone of the key factors for us to de-
cide to come here. Its very useful tooptimise your time, its brilliant. The conference programme has been
exceptionally well-received by the
knowledgeable audience. Among the
numerous acclaimed presentations,
one of the most popular was Pro-
fessor Sebastian Kummers (ViennaUniversity of Business and Econo-
mics), highlighting the importance of
supply chain exibility in the dyna-mic, uncertain and volatile business
environment of today. Delegates re-
ceived practical advice from Miguel
Suarez (former Supply Chain Direc-
tor of Kotnyi, currently the GlobalSupply Chain Director, Center of
Business Excellence at Swarovski),
who compared forecasting challen-
ges and solutions he implemented
at Kotnyi and Swarovski. All other

and the speakers were excellent, the
mixture of presentations was perfect.
So weve received a lot of new ideaswhich we can bring back home.
The cocktail reception on the rstday was opened by Jos Marinus,
President of the European LogisticsAssociation together with WolfgangKubesch, General Manager of BVLAustria, who praised the strong regi-
onal focus, the quality of the venue
as well as the diversity of the dele-
gates at the congress, emphasizing
that these factors make TRANSLOGConnect a truly unique event among
European congresses. As Iris Rav-nihar, Purchasing Logistics Director
of Hella Saturnus Slovenia so accu-
rately expressed the main values of
the event: It opens your windowsto new opportunities. Meetings with
suppliers, networking and getting to
know the practice of other companies
broaden your horizon and make you
see your situation from a whole new

UITP
Welcome to GenevaTwo years after a highly successful Congress in Dubai, the international public
transport community will meet again in Geneva for the 60th UITP World Con-
gress and Mobility and City Transport Exhibition.
The choice of the Swiss city as host
city for the next World Congress putsboth Geneva and Switzerlands pu-blic transport network rmly in thelimelight. Switzerland can boast both
a long and impressive history of pu-
blic transport; indeed, in June 2012,the country celebrated the 150th an-niversary of what is Europes lon-gest-serving tramway in Geneva.
Its railways are of world renown
thanks to their reputation for punctu-
ality, synchronised timetables, high
quality of service and innovation. In
2017, the Gotthard tunnel, a 57km-
long passage through the Alps (boredfrom 1998-2011) and ofcially theworlds longest railway tunnel, willofcially open. Its dense and diver-sied network of post buses, funicu-lars, cable cars, boats and integrated
urban and suburban public transport
systems means that Switzerland is
the ideal location to play host to the
worlds public transport and sustai-nable mobility community in 2013.
Transforming urban mobility
Based on well-documented econo-
mic and technological development
projections and a partnership with the
International Energy Agency (IEA),
UITP has developed urban mobility
scenarios for 2025 which highlightthe urgent need for more and better
quality public transport. By 2025,60% of the worlds population willlive in urban environments, leading
to a 50% increase in urban journeyscompared to 2005 levels. The public transport sector therefore
set itself the objective at the 2009UITP World Congress in Vienna ofdoubling its market share worldwide
by 2025, entailing a tripling of thenumber of journeys made by public
transport and a stabilisation of the
use of private cars. This would mean
the controlling of greenhouse gas
emissions; stabilising urban trans-
port energy consumption; healthier
lifestyles; the saving of human lives
by safer roads and the creation of se-
ven million new green jobs at public
transport operating companies.
One of the main focal points at Gene-va will be the i-move 2.0 concept;in other words, the radical change
required in the sectors business mo-del to meet the ambition of doubling
the market share of public transport
by 2025. Transforming urban mobi-
lity is becoming an urgent necessity:cities with unchallenged car depen-
dency will nd themselves losing outin competitiveness, failing to attract
people and businesses. Sustainable
transport can be delivered by the
green alliance of public transport, cycling and walking but a radical
overhaul is required in order to offer
services that are not only convenient,
but also t with peoples lifestyle va-lues.
The development of a healthier busi-
ness model for the sector - less reliant
on scarce public funding - needs to
be based on sound nancing with allof public transports beneciaries, di-rect or indirect, contributing towards
it. Regulatory aspects of this revolu-tion also need careful consideration
too. For example, do all i-move 2.0services need to be ruled by public
service obligations? While the busi-ness model for i-move 2.0 has yetto be forged, Geneva will serve as a
platform for innovative and collec-
tive thinking to help the sector move
forwards.
Geneva: the place to be in 2013
It is within this ambitious framework
of transforming urban mobility that
the Congress and Exhibition will take
place, its purpose being to share ideas
and offer a platform for idea-sharing
and debate. Keynote speeches at the
Opening Ceremony will be given byDr. Joan Clos, Executive Director of
the United Nations Human Settle-
ments Programme (UN-HABITAT)and Bertrand Piccard, the scientist-
adventurer, known for completing
the rst-ever non-stop balloon ightaround the world.
More than 150 speakers from over 30different countries set to take part of
some of the worlds most renownedpublic transport operators and autho-
rities. On the agenda is an unrivalledprogramme of three days of 44 ses-
sions.
Some of the topics include: futurebusiness models for integrated urban
mobility; combined mobility; the va-
lue of marketing and social media;
sourcing capital investment; perfor-
mance evaluation; delivering me-
gaprojects; achieving excellence in
public transport HR, knowledge ses-sions from different regions around
the world and much more.
Running alongside this will be theMobility and City Transport Exhibi-
tion. The Geneva Congress will fea-
ture some 300 exhibitors providingpublic transport stakeholders with
an insight into the latest innovative
mobility solutions, products and ser-
vices. The Exhibition continues to
attract the key political, operational,
technical and commercial decision-
makers over the last 34 years, who
come from around the world to net-
work, place orders and discuss the
issues affecting the sector. The UITP
stand will be an opportunity to catch
up on all the latest news from the As-
sociation.
The expected 10,000 public trans-port professionals making the trip
to Geneva for the Exhibition will
also benet from access to the ExpoForums. The Forums provide twodedicated venues where, in seminar
sessions, exhibitors will present the
most advanced technologies and sha-
re their expertise and technological
innovations with the Congress dele-
gates and professional visitors.
The nal days proceedings will begiven over to technical visits and
offer delegates the opportunity to
witness some of the host countrysrecent and ongoing innovations
in the sustainable mobility eld. Par-ticipants will be offered the chance
to see the CEVA (Geneva cross-bor-der commuter railway) construction
site, the Ltschberg base tunnel (a
mountain summit tunnel concept),
Switzerlands largest rail hub in Zu-rich and more. To help delegates get
around in Switzerland, VV-UTPand Swiss Travel Systems will of-
fer delegates (and an accompanying
person) a seven-day Swiss pass, en-
abling free use of the Swiss public
transport network.
In challenging economic times and
with the sustainable mobility sector
needing fresh impetus, the 60th UITPWorld Congress and Mobility andCity Transport Exhibition, will be the
ideal opportunity for the entire sector
to come together.
UIC
Brazilian Presidenthonours UICDilma Rousseff, President of the Re -
public of Brazil, was Guest of Ho-
nour at the opening of the 81st Gene-ral Assembly of UIC, the worldwide
railway association which celebrated
its 90th anniversary last year. ThePresident of Brazil was welcomed
at UIC Headquarters in Paris with
addresses by Satoshi Seino, Chair-
man of UIC, Jean-Pierre Loubinoux,
UIC Director General and Guilherme
Quintella, Chairman of the UIC La-
tin-American Region.Whilst addressing the heads of theworlds railways gathered at UIC,President Dilma Rousseff congratu-
lated participants on the 90-year an-niversary of the railway institution.
Brazil has an unbalanced transporta-
tion matrix. A continental country
like Brazil cannot be fundamentally
connected by highways. There should
be a way of being able to articulate
different modes: highways, water-ways and railways. Since 2007, im-
portant steps were the launch of an
Investment Plan for Railways whichwas the PAC (Growth Acceleration
Program) with 5,000 km and in 2012the launch of EPL Enterprise Plan-
ning and Logistics responsible for
thinking and planning a modal inte-
gration of the Brazilian port system.
10,000 km of railways.are possibly-too little for Brazil. Brazil is still in
the rst stage which basically con-sists of freight and for passengers. To
modernize and expand the infrastruc-
ture, a bidding process was released
for the choice of the high-speed train
technology and operator. Additionaly
there is also a real need for light rail
systems.
About UICs role, President DilmaRousseff stressed: I believe that agreat dialogue is to be established
with Brazil, which will support its
members opportunities, will ena-ble stability and security for invest-
ments, and will ensure the conditions
necessary to Brazil not only to struc-
ture its transportation system capable
of tting its challenges for the 21thcentury, but rather more to allow its
people to have more efcient trans-portation, either for companies with
regard to freight where Brazil is
a major producer of food, minerals,
energy (oil) and manufacturing, and
with regard to passengers. And in
conclusion I believe that this part-
nership between Brazil and UIC has
everything to yield strong results
and I am sure that due to the size
and importance of UIC, our interests
coincide and converge towards a fu-
ture of opportunities.
The assembly was also attended by
Guest of Honour Mr Jozef Szabo,
Administrator of the Federal RailroadAdministration (FRA) at the US Go-vernment Department of Transporta-
tion, who was present the previous
day at the UIC High-Level RoundTable marking the UIC anniversary.

Rsum: Intermodal Europe 2012
Smart container talk
The Intermodal Europe 2012 con-ference session took place on Day
Two of the three day event, on 28November, at the Amsterdam RAI.Don Miller look at the tracking and
monitoring of all container assets
globally and providing ROI (returnon Investment) for carriers through
daily operations.
Also on the agenda during this con-
ference session were Smart Contai-
ner Technology, Green Lane Ship-
ping and Global Data Exchange for
Shippers, Agents and Logistics com-
panies. We are facing a time when OceanCarrier prots are being squeezedand container overcapacity is dri-
ving the industry towards improved
operational efciencies said DonMiller. More efcient utilisationof container assets is important and
streamlining global operations also
results in a greener footprint.
Using monitoring systems and tech-
nology such as Smart Containers, companies can track containers,
helping them to gain a better under-
standing of the shipping movements
across the supply chain and more ea-
sily monitor their assets.
Assignment of liability, with bill-
back accountability is one of the
greatest returns on container tracking
and monitoring according to Don
Miller who adds that reefers and high
value cargo are the early adopters of
real-time monitoring and tracking, as
offered by Smart Containers.A Smart Container is any shippingcontainer equipped with sensors and
systems to track and report data. Forexample, containers equipped with a
GT 801 Communications Unit fromGlobe Tracker are able to determine
what, when and how to communi-
cate, using GPS, GSM, Wi-Fi or RFcommunications.
GT Smart Containers provide dataregarding location and the conditi-
on of the container, and its contents.
Monitoring can include temperature,
motion, G-Force impact damageevents and electronic seal breaches,
as well as other conditions of the car-
go such as CO2, humidity, light andeven an imbedded or covert cargo
tracker.
Globe Tracker securely connects
Smart Containers to each other and
to the appropriate customer databa-
ses, resulting in visibility throughout
the supply chain. Shippers are able
to track and monitor individual pro-
ducts, pallets and crates in real time,
enabling new services and revenue
models by sharing this data with their
customers.
Another monitoring and tracking
tool offered by Globe Tracker is a
shipping concept called Green Lane,
which Don had also discussed at In-
termodal Europe. A trusted shipper
loads a container and seals it with a
real time eSeal. Every 60 secondsthroughout the journey, the contai-
ner receives a report from the eSeal
including container locked/unlockedstatus and remaining battery life. At
the port of arrival, Customs can viewthe audit trail of that eSeal and, see-
ing no access to the container from
point of origin to the port, is able to
clear that container faster.
Intermodal Europe is one of the core
events in the ocean freight industry,
bringing together a large number of
key executive decision makers repre-
senting ocean carrier container assets
and equipment said Don Miller.
Never before have container assetutilisation and cargo visibility taken
such an important role in the ship-
ping industry, and Intermodal Euro-
pe provides a platform to help com-
panies looking for new technologies
and ways to increase protability, todiscover these solutions.
Don Miller, Director of Globe Trackers
A technology case study about the impact that Smart Containers can have on
global shipping was presented at Intermodal Europe 2012 by Don Miller, theDirector of Globe Tracker.
Presented at INTERMODES:
The Canton of Geneva MultimodalMobility StrategyIt was a duty for INTERMODES to organize a workshop in Geneva, particular-
ly to discover the work of the future Franco-Valdo-Genevois regional express
train, called CEVA Cornavin-Eaux-Vives-Annemasse: an exemplary project of
cross-border intermodal integration.
In 2017, the new rail link Cornavin-Eaux-Vives-Annemasse (CEVA)will unlock the Franco-Valdo-Gene-vois basin, an area of nearly a mil-
lion people showing a rapid growth.
This project was rewarded in 2010by the INTERMODES price. Thisinfrastructure is the backbone of a
regional express train that will be or-
ganized between the centers of An-
nemasse and Geneva within a 60 km
radius. This regional cross-borderproject (230 km of lines and 40 trainstations), mobilizes two Swiss can-
tons, one French region, two coun-tries, three railway companies, three
traction currents around a cross-bor-
der conurbation that the express train
will help shape and develop.
The direct result of commissioning
the CEVA rail link will be the threefold increase of public transport use
which is expected to rise from 15 000to 50 000 passengers daily.
An Unprecedented Growth
Geneva is now facing a crisis of unpre-
cedented growth. The canton should
count more than one million inhabi-
tants in 2030. Its economic competi-tiveness and its high level of quality
of life are at the origin of considerable
job creation and population growth.
Population projections for 2030predict an increase of employment
with 70 000 jobs, which will lead toan increase in demand for mobility
throughout the city. It considers that
each person makes an average of 3.5trips per day. Thus, 100 000 additio-nal inhabitants in 2030 mean 350000displacements more to manage every
day.
To Provide A Comprehensive
And Integrated Mobility
Christened Mobility 2030 themultimodal travel plan deployed by
Geneva in 2030 represents a compre-hensive and integrated mobility.
Comprehensive because it involves
all transport modes and all types of
journeys. Integrated, as it aims to co-
ordinate policies that appeared so far
as largely sectoral.
This policy is based on a vision ofmobility in which the user is placed
at the heart of the mobility planning,
New forms of mobility must not ne-cessarily based on the ownership of
vehicles.
To Optimize And Develop The
Existing Asset
Both involved infrastructures allow-
ing the build-up of structuring net-
works at the regional level and have
considerable potential. However, in-
dependently developed and discon-
nected, it is now time to have them
modernized and adapted in order to
make them work in complementary
across national borders. To do this,
they must master the major impact of
the border effect (differences in po-
litical and administrative structures),
which make the implementation of
projects difcult. In this sense, theimplementation of the agglomeration
project is representative of a collec-
tive will to overcome the border ef-
fect.The cross-border nature is thus
both a constraint and an opportunity.
A constraint, since Geneva cannot
consider responding to the challen-
ges of mobility in 2030 remainingwithin the cantonal borders. An op-
portunity, because the territory of the
cross-border conurbation has a po-
tential in terms of infrastructure that
is essential to highlight.
To Promote The Transport
Modes Complementarity
Mobility 2030 is designed to test anddevelop the concepts introduced by
the cantonal Draft Master Plan and
the agglomeration Project.
Thus, one of the objectives of the
Geneva cantonal Blueprint 2030provides for the setting up of a mul-
timodal travel conception at the ag-
glomeration level. To meet the travel
demand of the population, the cantonsets up with its metropolitan partners
a multimodal mobility conception
based on four pillars: eco-friendlymobility, public transport, individual
motorized transport and parking. The
transport system is planned accor-
ding to a global vision integrating all
transport modes, with adequate ar-
ticulation on road which capacity is
limited. The mobility policy aims to
improve multimodal offer, with more
attractive public transport, especially
in terms of commercial speed, deve-
loped eco-friendly mobility networks
and quicker individual motorized
transport journeys thanks to a signi-cant decrease in trafc and the reali-zation of missing road connections.
Competition or confrontation bet-
ween the different transport modes
has marked the Genevan politics in
recent decades and has led to an im-
passe. It is necessary to break this
logic and consider that everyone is
in turn, depending on the time and
activity, according to the age, moto-
rist, pedestrian, public transport user
or biker. It is a question of develo-
ping multimodal practices, encoura-
ging complementary travel modes,
encouraging the most effective ways

complementary travel modes, encou-
raging the most effective ways func-
tion of the context and the type of
movement: the regional express trainfor relatively long distances between
home and work, walking for short
distances in the city center, for exa-
mple. It also means to stop trying to
do everything everywhere, resulting
in a segmentation of the public space,
where all travel modes somehowshare a road with limited capacity,
causing general dissatisfaction. In-
stead, it is necessary to nd a balancebetween the different modes, which
allows each of them to be optimally
used by the travellers.
Clear And Assumed Tradeoffs
From this point of view, the modalcomplementarity operates arbitra-
tions by giving priority to certain
transport modes in certain parts of
the territory, rather than trying in
vain to organize the movement of
all modes on all parts of the coun-
try. The limited dimensions of road
spaces through which all transportmodes pass leads to neat trade-offs.
The most efcient methods in termsof passenger volumes and the most
efcient according the ratio time / di-stance / energy should be preferred. In the heart of the city, it is a question
of favouring the mean that will allow
the highest number of persons to pass
through in the same place and at the
same time.
An Offer Tailored To The Users
Needs
In order to encourage the change of
behavior of everyone, to opt for pu-
blic transport, it is essential that the
network structure and its operations
are primarily organized to suit theuser needs. This user oriented offer
must answer a few fundamental prin-
ciples: Most of the users must reach theirdestination faster and without con-
nection;
Each district must have a directconnection to the center of the city,
for the journeys continuing to ano-
ther neighborhood, there must be
only one line interchange ; for this
purpose, each line of the backbone
network (with the exception of the
tangential and the regional express
train feeder lines) must pass through
two of the four main interfaces of the
center; Each branch of the backbone net -work (bus or tram) has a direct con-
nection to an interregional level train
station;
The system must be built on agood legibility and efciency duringlow peak hours ; as needed, additio-
nal routes can be added during peak
hours;
At Lancy-Pont-Rouge and Eaux-Vives Cornavin departure stations, the urban network must have suf-cient capacities towards the center
(heart of the city) to carry a ow ofcustomers boarding or unboarding
the train;
The urban network and the regio-nal express train must be well inter-connected with feeder lines schedules
coordinated with rail lines;
Urban lines schedules must be ea-sily identiable, with paced frequen-cies (all 10, 7 or 5 min. Example)standardized for better readability;
The operating system must mini-mize the number of lines per axis.
The Main Stages Of The Struc-
turing Public Transport Net-
work Development
The development of the metropolis
structuring public transport network
in 2030 is planned as follows: The commissioning of CEVA in
2017 ; A major change in the quality ofthe transport offer by 2022, ve yearsafter the commissioning of CEVA; The second major stage of deplo-yment of the rail network in 2030with the completion of the regional
express lines.
SENER has been recognised in thePotencia awards 2012, deliveredeach year by TPI Group, in the Tun-
nels category.
In the 6th Edition of the PotenciaAwards 2012, SENER competedin the Tunnels section, against the
companies Dragados in temporary
joint ventures Zartamo and Tolosa,
for the false tunnels project in the
Basque Y high speed stretch of theMadrid-Basque Country high speed
line (north of Spain); and, on the
other hand against Joca Ingeniera y
Construcciones and Intervas del Le-
vante y Sarco, for the rainwater inter-
ceptors of the Northern and Westerndistricts of Cartagena (Murcia, south
of Spain).
In this occasion, SENER has won thenal prize thanks to real-time riskmonitoring and controlling of the
tunneling boring machine (TMB) in
the Sants-Sagrera high speed tunnel
in the city of Barcelona.
This project has represented a huge
challenge for the engineering compa-
ny due to the tunnel passing close to
the heritage sites of La Pedrera and
the Sagrada Familia and the workshave been totally supervised by UN-ESCO.SENER, through the real-time su-
pervising of the boring machine ope-
ration together with the excavation
parameters measuring, managed to
reduce to minimum the surface set-
ling and achieved to develop the pro-
ject without any relevant incident.
On the occassion of the project worksexecution of the Madrid-Barcelo-
naFrench Border high speed line,Adif (Administrador de Infraestruc-
turas Ferroviarias, Spanish railwayinfrastructure manager) awarded
SENER the contract to carry out therisk management consultancy in the
tunneling boring machines (TMB-
EPB) operations in the Sants-Sagre-
ra, Montcada and Gerona tunnels.
In concrete, the Sants-Sagrega stretch
awarded in this edition, fully runs in
the municipality of Barcelona and
passes by Provena street, Avenida
Diagonal and Mallorca street. The
executed tunnel total lenght is 5,100meters, of which 4,849 m are carried
out through a tunneling boring ma-
chine (TMB-EPB).
